  1. Let us know how it goes with the new AV.
  2. Hopefully this will do it for you :)
  3. Hi, One short beep is normal. By "Memory" he was refering to the RAM ( "ddr sticks" ) How did you test it? The readings need to be within about +/- 5% .................so 12v could be 12.5v or 11.5v and still be OK. A reading of 11v is too low. ( 11.5v is pushing it too )
  4. Let us know how you get on :)
  5. Hi and welcome to ExTS Are you trying to connect wirelessly ? If so - can you connect using an ethernet cable direct from your machine to the router? Do you know if your machine set up to acquire IP and DNS automatically ? Try this: Start > Run .....type in .....cmd ......ENTER At the prompt type ......ipconfig /release ...........ENTER [ there is a space after ipconfig ] Then type ......ipconfig /renew.....................ENTER
  6. Did you change RAM voltages ? What else did you try ? Run on just 1 module. If you still get lagging then try a different module. The machine will not run without at least one module in place.
  7. That is what I was going to suggest that you do - but also to make a note of the settings so that you could revert to them if necessary. Can you connect to the Hotspot now ?
  8. Hi again I am on Vista at the moment but I think it is the same .... Start > Control Panel > Network & Sharing Center > manage Network Connections ( left side ) > click on Wireless Network Connection > Properties ( bottom left ) > Highlight TCP/IPv4 by clicking on it > Properties It should say there. If yours is different I can check on my Win 7 machine for you.
  9. Is the laptop Win 7 ? Do you know if you have it set to allocate IP and DNS address automatically ? That's why I asked - I wanted to know if it was still saying it was connected to your home network or the Hotspot. I assume it is the Hotspot ?
  10. You are welcome RAY :)
  11. Hi and welcome to ExTS You new card is 9 inches long compared with the 5 inches of your old one. You need to make sure that you have the space. Both cards require a PCIe x 16 slot - so no problem there. For the new card you will need a mimimum ( ideally more ) 500 Watt PSU and 2 x 6 pin PCI power connections
  12. Hi and welcome to ExTS What was the problem that caused you to make changes in the BIOS in the first place ? Try taking the RAM out and running on just one module. If it still lags swap the modules over. What is the make and model number of your machine? I assume that this is a desktop ?
  13. Here is your original thread :) http://extremetechsupport.com/threads/13032-Solved-adds-all-over-my-browser
  14. Hi carlr and welcome to ExTS Is this your home router or the Hotspot ? If you right click on the monitor icon ( bottom right of screen ) can you see the Hotspot listed ? Is the above the results when you try to connect to it this way ?
  15. Hi Ray Are you getting targeted on this site or generally ? I use a piece of software called DNT+ ( Do Not Track + ) http://www.abine.com/dntdetail.php It runs in the background and all you will notice is a green square top right of screen You can click on this to see the results. One of the Security guys will be able to advise further I am sure.
  16. Hi Simon We need to eliminate the Video Card ( or prove that this is the problem ). Can the guy in your local shop test the Video Card for you - or lend you one to try ?
  17. Hi, If you have a voltmeter I have written a Test for PSU see here http://kenspchelp.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=10
  18. Hi and welcome to ExTS If you are wanting to boot from the SATA drive as you say then I am afraid that this will not be possible if you have an OS on the drive already. Windows is "clever" enough to recognise that there is different hardware present ( motherboard etc ) and refuses to boot. If you are putting XP on the SATA drive - XP does not have SATA drivers embedded and needs these installing before the installation of the XP OS. If XP is already on it then it is possible to run a Repair Installation of the OS . This will associate the installation with the new hardware and keep your files and data intact. I can explain how to do this if necessary. You will need a CD that is a full installation version and not recovery disks or OEM version.
  19. Hi and welcome to ExTS I read through the thread and there are a number of posts that occur AFTER you started this thread at 8-03pm tonight. These guys ( and JMH ) are not on-line 24 / 7 I always try to get back to posters within 24 hours ...........and I am sure that they will do the same.
  20. Hi, The wattage on a PSU is the maximum it can supply. This doesn't mean to say that if you have a 1000 Watt PSU the output is 1000Watts all the time. The system draws the current it needs. So, for example, if you buy a Video Card for your system and the Video Card specs suggest that the maximum wattage the card will need is 200Watts ( this is not the PSU but the power required to run the card ) then your present PSU would not be able to supply the required current to run the whole system. A 1000Watt PSU could ( with some to spare ). It supplies the system requirements as and when the system needs it. ( The current supplied varies as you are doing different things ). Current is measured in Amps. Watts = Amps x Volts. The PSU is generally bought to comply with the requirements of the new Video Card. You should be able to look at the card specs and the system specs will normally specify the minimum requirements from a PSU. If the specs suggested 450 Watt minimum then there is no reason why you could not buy a 750 watt PSU. I hope this helps.
  21. Hi, DON'T PAY IT !! There are a few good ( free ) AVs available. I use MS Essentials. It is excellent. Auto updates - runs in the background - no adverts :) There is also Avast and Avira that you could look at. I certainly wouldn't pay those prices when there are free options to be had :) Just a note: Don't have 2 AVs on your system at once. If you do decide to get rid of Norton - there is a removal tool that you can download.
  22. Hi and welcome from me too. I you don't have another PSU to try ( Nev's suggestion ) I have a step-by-step guide to "No POST Beeps" see here: http://kenspchelp.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=172
  23. Hi Simon It shouldn't matter which of the connectors you use. If you are getting problems with one and not the other this suggests a possible PSU problem. Do you ? I can't see anything obvious in your event viewer log. You get Media Center Extender warnings - do you have an extender ? ( for streaming video etc to other rooms ) The error code indicates that a connection could not be made. You get an error against DCOM Check that the DCOM service is set to Automatic Start > type in ....services.msc ............ENTER I would still be tempted to try a different Video Card. ( borrow one )
  24. Hi and welcome to ExTS :) It is unlikely to be a problem with the house socket itself - unless you are prone to thunderstorms in your area and it could be a spike has caused the problem. Do you have the system connected through an Anti-Surge Adapter ? You would know then if there was any lightening about at the time - was there ? Do you get any beeps when the machine is switched on ? If you do - ignore the advice below. I would take a guess that it is either the Power Supply Unit or the motherboard that is at fault. The fact that there are LEDs lit is no indication that the PSU is functioning properly. To find out you need to strip the motherboard of all removable hardware and connections. See here - http://kenspchelp.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=172 It is not too difficult a job and if you are unsure - take digital photos to rimind you what you have done. There really is only one way that the hardware and connections can fit together. ( and as it isn't working anyway there is nothing to lose :) )
  25. Hi and welcome to ExTS Presumably you tried this ( hence J-B's question :) ) This I don't understand. Do all other USB devices work properly? This is odd too as D:\ is usually ( not always ) reserved for a second partition on the hard drive. Acer usually allocate this as "DATA D:\" Does your hard drive only have one partition ?
