Start > Run Type in ............cmd ...ENTER At the prompt type in .... ipconfig /release [ there is a space before / ] then type in ...... ipconfig /renew 1. If it cannot do this what error message are you getting ? 2. What was the result of the WinsockFix ? 3. Please confirm that you have tried 2 working adapters. If you right click on the monitor icon ( bottom right of screen ) try the "Repair" option [ WinsockFix should have done this ] Also .... There should be "Connect ot a Network" ......can you see yours. What happens if you try to connect ?

EDIT Armageddon - sorry - our posts crossed. Hi, I am going to leave the fine detail to Armageddon as he has recently used this and I am not too familiar with Ubuntu. You can download Ubuntu from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download Click on the big button. I would select "Run" after the download rather than the option to "Save". You need to burn it to a CD. When you run it ( you may wish to wait for Armageddon ) you may get prompted to Install / Run from CD ( or similar ) You do not want to install it. You need to run it from a CD. This is a big download and may take some time to complete. You will need to have a CD ( 700MB ) in the drive ready. You will get a box on screen after the download > simply click on "Start" in the small square in the middle to start the burn process. Let us know when you have Ubuntu on a CD and hopefully Armageddon can talk you through the rest of the process.

You are very welcome :) When you get into Ubuntu maybe you could advise others here ??

Hi James This is a CPU Built in Self Test Obviously it is not passing. Also indicating a problem with the CPU Your problem lies with the CPU. Take it out - clean off the old thermal paste with rubbing alcohol ( any pharmacy ) and apply a very thin layer of thermal paste evenly before re-attaching the heat sink. Try it again.

From the manual - the default IP Address is 192.168.0.1 ( I was guessing before ) I suggest that you try 192.168.0.10 if putting the default in the "Use this IP Address ......" doesn't work for you.

Hi and welcome to ExTS How did you do this? Is this an IDE or SATA drive? If it is IDE then how you connected it may explain why you couldn't accesss it. If you connected up as a slave and it wasn't recognised it is unlikely that an enclosure would be any better.

[Solved] slow unresponsive laptop
KenB replied to tismehi's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Are you sure this machine isn't haunted ?? Run it for a few days to see if it stays stable. We can try running a check on the system files if it plays up again. -
Post this log. There is no benefit in running MBAM multiple times. Starbuck has given you advice - which you seem to have missed. You have a serious threat on your system. Please reply and acknowledge starbuck's post.

You have had quite a lot of malware on there by the look of it. I will ask our security experts to take a look - and advise further.

[Solved] slow unresponsive laptop
KenB replied to tismehi's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
That is good to hear. Strange how it was slow initially though. I don't use F-F so the only advice I can suggest is that you un-install then install it again to see if this corrects the problem. If you have MBAM - you don't really need Spybot ......it is a bit dated according to our security experts. -
Hi Just to add to what Bluesplayer has written: If you have the original installation disk ( unlikely with a Dell ) or the recovery disks that came with it - it is a relatively simple job to revert the system to what it was when you bought it. If you don't have any disks then you need to copy all of your files / folders onto a DVD or external hard drive ( you need to do this anyway :) ) then delete them from the drive before you pass the machine on. CCleaner will only remove temporary and unnecessary files. Dban ( as suggested by Bluesplayer ) will wipe EVERYTHING off the drive leaving it absolutely clean. It is a long job to check everywhere on the system to make sure that nothing is left behind that you would not want to pass on. The easiest option is to restore the OS to factory settings if this is possible.

[Solved] New Female 3.5 mm audio Jack
KenB replied to Neil Cooper's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Neil Thanks for the feedback. A lot of these PCBs are produced in Taiwan and the Middle East and often simple components like a jack socket are not compatible with what is available here. Good to hear that you have it sorted. -
Fans going really fast on high end pc when on minecraft
KenB replied to Aldaz108's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
It should be OK - until it starts running hot ( if it does ) then it will shut down. If the bearing is going - it will eventually stop functioning. Keep an eye on the temps - especially under load. -

So - The temp is 70C The fan would seem to be doing its job. If the fan is noisy it could be due to a dry or worn bearing. -
[Solved] slow unresponsive laptop
KenB replied to tismehi's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
If the drive was formatted there would be nothing left on it at all - no data - no malware ......nothing. So your installation literally started afresh with a clean drive. -
Either. Your machine will run with just one 1GB Module if you wish. I would be inclined to buy 2 x 512 MB if you want to add 1 GB (you would not notice too much difference with 1.25 GB)

Hi and welcome to ExTS Is the Operating System Win 2K as in your details ? If so - I don't know my way around that as well as I should :) It may or may not be a virus / malware. It could be a full hard drive. It could be short of RAM - or failing RAM. Let's check the easy things first. (this is where I am guessing .....) Start > Right click on My Computer > Properties Hopefully this will tell us how much RAM ( Memory ) is installed. Post this back. Start > My Computer > Right Click on C:\ > Properties This should tell you the size of the hard drive and how much free space. Post this information back please. ============= Which AntiVirus is installed? What is happening when you try to run a scan? Do you have internet access with this machine ?

[Solved] slow unresponsive laptop
KenB replied to tismehi's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Start > Control Panel > System This will tell you if it is 32 or 64 bit. You said in your first post that you have 3GB RAM. This is fairly typical for a 32 bit system as much more than this is not recognised by the OS. 64 bit systems generally have more RAM installed ( not always ). You can have a 32 bit OS on a 64 bit capable machine - the one I am on is set up this way. I wouldn't put anything else on that machine until you have sorted it out. I would be inclined to run check-disk on it to verify that the hard drive is OK Then run system file check to check the installed OS files. Start > type in .....cmd .............do not hit ENTER yet right click on the cmd.exe top left of screen. Run as Administrator At the prompt type .......chkdsk /f/r ...........ENTER You will need to restart for check-disk to run This will check and repair any problems with the disk (if it can). =============== When you used the Recovery Disks - did the process format the hard drive ? Did you see this? http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD7C02140000R0136064.jpg -
Hi This is from the Asus site: http://www.asus.com/999/html/events/mb/socket775/p5s800-vm/overview.htm# It doesn't indicate the max RAM that the board will support. I did find a site that suggested that it supported up to 2GB. Run the Crucial scan to see if this is confirmed. Crucial suggest these are compatible: http://www.crucial.com/uk/upgrade/ASUS-memory/ASUS+Motherboards/P5S800-VM-upgrades.html

I am wondering about the Wireless LED that isn't lit. When you press the wireless on/off switch - does that light up the switch to indicate that it is "on" ? What is the make and model number of the router ? Try the following - test after each: Turn the router off - leave for 30 seconds - turn it on again. Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Local Area Connection > Properties > Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) > Properties Check the box next to "use the following IP Address" and also "Use the following DNS Server Address" use these settings: ( these are fairly standard but I can check when you tell me which router you have ) IP Address - 192 - 168 - 1 - 10 Subnet Mask 255 - 255 - 255 - 0 Default Gateway 192 - 168 - 1 - 1 Use the DNS settings as shown below: ( don't forget to click OK ) http://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/sshot20100605222815.png If that doesn't work ....... Download XP Winsock Fix from here and run it: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html After the Winsock fix you may need to go back and set the "Obtain IP Address etc" to Auto

computer doesn't want to play.....games
KenB replied to supermosiman's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
These temperatures look ok - does it not give you a temperature for the video card? Do you have on-board video that you can try? If you do - take the Radeon out of the slot first. -
Post the results here. If it shows anything at all I will ask one of our security experts to take a look and advise further.
