  1. Does the black screen show after the Windows screen ? Which Anti-Virus are you using ?
  2. The problem seems to be the external Buffalo drive. Is this set to backup / scan using Memeo on each boot? I am not familiar with this software but that seems to me, to be the likely cause. Alternatively your AV may be scanning the external drive - which would obviously add to the boot time.
  3. Try the Update Patch from my previous link: see here This fixes some of the Win7 functionality problems - it specifically mentions Toolbox ....which is what you are looking for I think :)
  4. You STILL have not told me what is listed in Device Manager when you click the + next to Network Adapters. So, working with limited information..... Right click whatever is listed and select "Update Driver Software" If you have a disk with the drivers on you need to put this in now. You need to find the drivers for the Network Card. The yellow ! is telling you that there is a problem.
  5. I suggested earlier that you change the Boot Order. Do you have a floppy drive? Does the system boot up normally without the external drive connected?
  6. Hi and welcome to ExTS The 4200 / 5300 refers to the data transfer rate - so the 5300 would be a little faster - assuming that the motherboard is compatible. The PC2 5300 is backwards compatible with pc 4200 - in other words it will work - but will run slower if the motherboard can only cope with 4200. If Crucial is suggesting that it is 5300 and the RAM is actually 4200 I am surprised - but it does happen. If you can let us know which motherboard you have we can tell you exactly what the compatible RAM is.
  7. Hi Liz, I don't have an ipod but I did find this: http://www.ipodpctransfer.com/pictures-ipod-computer.html It says it is free and gives an explanation how to transfer. Somebody else may have actual experience of this process :)
  8. Hi Liz and welcome to ExTS You are only as old as you feel. Without giving away any secrets - you are in good company here :) I have it on good authority that Nev checked out the electrics in the Arc http://bak2moi.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/laughing_smiley.gif
  9. Hi One way to find out is to attach it to another machine and run a checkdisk on it. You will need a hard drive to USB enclosure or adapter. Click Here I have one of these and for the price you cannot go wrong. This is a 2.5 inch SATA to USB enclosure ( caddy ). If you know that your hard drive is SATA this will do the job. There is an IDE drive ( older ) that is different. There are 3.5 inch drives but these are desktop hard drives. take a look here: Click Here Let me know if you wish to go down this route.
  10. Hi I was hoping one of our security team would have looked in to pick this one up. Please be patient - they are very busy and not only on this site. DO NOT take any notice of that message - it is a scam !! Can you boot up in Safe Mode ? Switch on and constantly tap F8 about once per second. Select Safe Mode from the list I will leave a message for the security guys - but do not respond to that message.
  11. No - it will have no effect on the boot time. Your boot time is affected ONLY when the external drive is plugged in. Take a look in the BIOS for Boot Order or Boot Sequence or similar and make sure that the Boot Order is: 1st - CDROM Drive 2nd - Primary Hard Drive ( the one that has Windows on ) If it is set up this way already move the Hard Drive to 1st in the Boot Order.
  12. Have you tried enabling "Superboot"?
  13. Hi and welcome to ExTS I will delete your other post. I had to look this up - but these are disabled by default. SuperBoot: SuperBoot allows system-relevant information to be stored in CMOS upon the first normal startup of your PC, and the relevant parameters will be restored to help the system start up more quickly on each subsequent startup. SuperBIOS-Protect: SuperBIOS-Protect function protects your PC from being affected by viruses, e.g. CIH. It would do no harm to try them enabled. Have you tried booting up without the external drive in - and then add it afterwards ?
  14. Hi, If it is on-board then it is not a card as such - it is a chip on the motherboard. Let us know how you get on after speaking with the people who built it for you.
  15. If this is only 9 months old it should still be covered by warranty. You may well void any warranty by going inside the case. Your first call should be to the place that built the system. White screen and whirring sound could be a Video Card with a problem. Do you have a Video Card which is fan cooled?
  16. It is hardly worth adding to the suggestions that Nev has supplied if you have not got back to us with the results.
  17. Welcome to ExTS
  18. Hi, This is not really my area of expertise - but I will have a go until somebody else chips in ......... Can you play DVDs and CDs on this drive? Start > Run .............type in ........devmgmt.msc .............ENTER Click the + next to DVD CD ROM Drives Are there any yellow exclamation marks or Red Xs ?
  19. Hi, There is an AutoFix here: You need to click on "Run Now" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358 Give this a try.
  20. Yes - 3 previous question ...............3 replies from staff ................no response from eddie460 !! I removed the unnecessary links from your post in this thread :)
  21. Hi, According to the HP site see here Your printer is Win 7 64 bit compatible and the drivers are embedded in Win 7 ( detect and install automatically ) What is the warning message that you get?
  22. We tried :) I do think it is related to the fact that there is no Win7 compatible driver for that hardware. You could contact the manufacturers direct and ask them ...............just a thought.
  23. Hi and welcome to ExTS Try adding 127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com too. I have just tried www.facebook.org and that re-directs to Facebook so add this to the hosts file too: (she probably logged on this way ) 127.0.0.1 facebook.com 127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com 127.0.0.1 facebook.org 127.0.0.1 www.facebook.org After you have set up the Hosts File try this to test: Open Internet explorer and type into the address bar...... 69.171.229.16 ..........ENTER ( no http:// ....) This is the IP Address of Facebook and is another way of accessing the site. If you can gain access this way we may need to look further. Also... When you say "Overwritten" ......does the Hosts File get changed? Security Essentials will not do this. Have you set the Hosts file on your daughter's pc to be Read Only? This way it cannot be overwritten.
  24. Hi and welcome to ExTS Hope you enjoy the forums :)
