  1. Let us know how you get on. The Boot.ini above is NOT to replace your own. You must take a look at what is there already and add the second partition in the same manner as the first. Use the one above as a guide only.
  2. There must be a setting in your Trend Micro that is sending the scan logs to your desktop. See here: http://esupport.trendmicro.com/solution/en-us/1059509.aspx In answer to your original question - "Can I delete them" the answer is "Yes" Until you find the setting that directs these logs to a Trend folder and not the desktop you will get a zip file appear after every scan by the looks of it. I will try to locate a manual - it may be easier if you take a look at the options within Trend itself. I assume that you have knowingly installed Trend Micro ? I have just downloaded it onto my laptop. It has run a scan and saved the results in a zipped file similar to yours - but not on my desktop. There doesn't seem to be any options / settings with this. Do you need this on your system ?
  3. Hi Bob, I have never done what you are suggesting - but it is possible. Have you given any thought as to how you will know which OS you are working with once booted up .....or are you keeping the second option "just in case"? You could always clone the HDD to a second disk. That way - if the Hard Disk dies - you can just pop in the spare. Do you have the software to clone the primary partition? The BIOS may sort it automatically and give you the option. Usually the screen will wait for a response and if there is none - it will load the OS on the primary partition. You may need to alter the Boot.ini file if the second OS is not detected. It would look something like this when you add the second OS: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional in Partition 1" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional in Partition 2" /fastdetect
  4. Hi, It depends what is wrong with the drive. You can get a 2.5 inch SATA to USB adapter quite cheaply. Attach this to the drive and then to the USB port of a working computer. You should be able to access the drive like you would a memory stick - if the drive is accessible. If it isn't there are one or two tests that can be run on the drive from the working computer.
  5. Hi and welcome to ExTS Can you start up in Safe Mode? Switch on and constantly tap F8 ( about once per second ) Select Safe Mode from the list of options. Let me know if the system is OK in Safe Mode. You can try "Last Known Good Configuration" from the same list. I assume this is a desktop machine - is it ?
  6. Hi, The original thread is here: http://extremetechsupport.com/threads/12638-Dead-in-the-water You indicated previously that there was a problem with the power lead - which caused the problem in the first place. Do you still have a problem with this lead ? You should be able to put the cd back in the drive and run the recovery process again. If you get an error message again make a note of the error and post it here please.
  7. I thought you were posting this ?? The dates on the right of your attachment are not daily. Click on one of the zipped folders and try to open it in Notebook. Post the contents here please - if you can open it.
  8. Post the file - it may help. I am not familiar with Trend -but is there a setting that stores details of scans to a specific location ?
  9. Hi and welcome to ExTS Have you activated any backup software recently? Do they appear once per day - or when you are doing a specific task? The file name - does this relate to the date it was created ? Have you tried deleting the oldest?
  10. Hi and welcome to ExTS
  11. You are welcome. You are making the right choice in uninstalling one of the AVs. Good Luck.
  12. Hi Katie and welcome to ExTS :) Have you tried your monitor on another system to make sure that is OK ? Does Windows boot up ( without graphics ) in other words do you hear the Windows Chimes that indicate that your system is ready for use? Do you get any POST beeps at all ? Switch on and constantly tap F8. ( about once per second ) This normally gives you the Advanced Startup options - can you see them ? Having verified that that the monitor is OK ......... Take the side panel off. If you have not been inside a case before it is not as complex as it looks. Switch off at the wall but leave the plug in. This maintains the earth connection to the motherboard. Locate the CMOS battery. It looks like a silver coin. Take this out for about a minute then replace. ( Note the + is on top ). This will reset the BIOS to default settings. Try again. Take the RAM modules out. You do this by releasing the white levers at either end. With the RAM out - switch on. Do you get anything on screen now?
  13. Starbuck or etavares are probably the best equipped to answer this. You should not have 2 AVs running on the system. They will conflict. I did find this: 10 tips for using Public WiFi
  14. Yes - I saw your thread on the other forum. Let us know how you get on.
  15. Hi Jane I use Mailwasher - probably a very old version :) The thing I like about it is that you can preview the emails and delete them from the server without them coming anywhere near your system. The slightly annoying thing with it is that if I don't check it daily I can have dozens and dozens of emails to sort. The free version does not auto-delete them for you. This could be considered a good thing. At least I know what I have deleted. I am sure that there will be others who use something different - but for the moment I am sticking with Mailwasher.
  16. Hi and welcome to ExTS 1. Has this machine always done this since installing Win7? 2. Is the rest of the hardware Win7 compatible ? 3. If it blue-screens again could you make a note of the STOP ERROR and let us know what this says. It may give us a hint as to what the problem is. 4. Does it do the same in Safe Mode? Switch on and constantly tap F8 ( about once per second ) You will get a list of options - select Safe Mode from here. Graphics will look odd due to minimal drivers.
  17. You are welcome. Let us know how you get on with the new RAM.
  18. Hi, If I can add my two cents worth ...... HDMI is a pure digital output. The is not a simple HDMI to VGA adapter. The digital signal can be converted - but at a cost. DVI makes use of the two. It has both digital and analogue outputs. This is why you can get a DVI to VGA adapter at a reasonable price. The conclusion being - your new card should produce graphics on your VGA monitor if it has DVI sockets. It has 2 x DVI ports and 1 x HDMI port. That card has 2 x PCIe 6 pin power connections. Do you have these connected?
  19. BeeCeeBee - you are correct. They are one and the same person. "Both" are banned. I have left the thread so that others can see that not all advice on forums is "good".
  20. Hi Rich This should be OK. I would be inclined to say "yes" to this. Whilst the m/board specs suggests that it supports DDR3 and DDR2 the modules are actually different. ?? The notch is in a different place - so unless you have DDR3 slots and DDR2 slots then the answer is NO. The timings and voltages are different too. If you have DDR2 installed at the moment - and these modules fit all slots - then you need DDR2 RAM.
  21. Hi Rich If this is your motherboard then Asus make the following recommendation: 32 bit systems do not recognise more than 4GB 64 bit systems will recognise much more than this. I think you have answered your own question regarding this. No - the RAM you use does not need to come from this list. This is a list of Asus tested RAM - the fact that your RAM does not appear does not mean that it will not function. No - not at all This is a quote from the m/board specs ( assuming that this is your board ) :
  22. Hi Rich, And a very polite welcome to you :) Enjoy the forums and if we can help ........just post your problem.
  23. spacebar - please be aware that the link in the previous post will cost you $99 For $99 I would want a little more than to hope .........
