  1. I thought it may be. If you are ABSOLUTELY SURE that there is nothing on this drive that you want ...... AND It is positioned to the right of C:\ ( see my picture last post ) You can do the following: Go back to Disk Management Right click on the drive and select "Delete Volume" You may get a message that the drive is in use - Continue. It will not take long to Delete the Volume. Next... Right click on C:\ You will get the option now to "Extend Volume" .....click on this. The Wizard will pop-up You will be told "The Maximum Available Space" Select the amount of space and type in what it says is the maximum ( could be 99950 or similar ) DO NOT type in a figure greater than the maximum. That's it. You have incorporated D:\ Drive into the C:\ Drive. Please make sure: That there is no data at all on D:\ It is to the RIGHT of C:\ in Disk Management. Check and then check again before you make the changes. If you are unsure of any of the above please ask.
  2. Hi and welcome to ExTS Have you got S1 or S3 Sleep Mode enabled in the BIOS ? (There is not a standard BIOS I am afraid so instructions may differ for yours) Switch on and tap either F2 / DEL ( depends on your system ) You will see ..."Press --- to Enter Setup" on screen. You have to be quick. Once in the BIOS look for Power Management or similar. (Move around with the arrow keys) Enable ACPI ( Advanced Configuration Power Interface ) then select "S1" or "S3" for ACPI Standby State S1 (Sleep). The CPU is stopped; The RAM is regenerated; the system functions in reduced power. S3 (Standby) The CPU does not have any power; The RAM regenerates at minimum; the power supply unit is in mode of reduced power. Make sure "Wake on Ring" and "Wake on LAN" options are disabled. Save and Exit. ( Usually F10 but you will see this on screen )
  3. Hi and welcome to ExTS With the RAM in place you get nothing. Take the RAM out and you get POST beeps. Sounds like bad RAM / incompatible RAM to me. Put just one module in and try that. If you get nothing - try the other one by itself. Let us know how you get on.
  4. Is there a shortage ??? Does this mean I have to have Apple pie now ?? http://www.smileyvault.com/albums/CBSA/smileyvault-cute-big-smiley-animated-060.gif
  5. Hi Just to be on the safe side - uninstall the driver from Device Manager first - then re-install using Nev's suggestion.
  6. Hi, If I can butt in ?? You say that you have a partition - 9.39GB and is totally empty. You could extend the 139GB into the 9.39GB partition ( easily ). making a 148GB space on C:\ Check the following for me: Start ....type in .....diskmgmt.msc .....ENTER Your drive will be shown as Disk 0 ( probably ) and the 2 partitions will be obvious. Right click on the shaded 139GB C:\ It should look something like this: http://i403.photobucket.com/albums/pp118/kenbrabin/Diskmgmt.jpg The first block is my recovery partition. This cannot be touched. If you have a third block ( D:\ ?? ) with no data on it - we may be able to incorporate this into the C:\ partition. Is "extend Volume" an option and not greyed out when you right click on the C:\ partition?
  7. Hi etavares I suggested that Jim run MBAM as a check. He said his machine was slow. Link to original thread in post 2.
  8. Hi Neville Is this machine a Dell Inspiron ? If it isn't your Recovery Disks are not going to work anyway as they are tied to the original motherboard of the original machine .
  9. Hi Neville I am assuming ( from plastic nev's post ) that your XP Pro is a legal copy ? If you have an ethernet cable - can you try connecting direct to the router with this please. Let me know if you can connect. ===================== Wirelessly Start > Run > ..type in ......cmd.......ENTER At the prompt type in .......ipconfig /all ............ENTER You will get a list. At the top left of screen is a small black box. Right click on this > Edit > Select All Right click on the black box again > Edit > Copy You will probably need to Paste this into WordPad or Notepad. Start > All Programs > Accessories. Open Notepad from here. Paste the list ( CTRL + V ) Click on File > SaveAs .....and save it to a memory stick. Take the memory stick to the machine you are using now > open Notepad or Wordpad > Open the file > copy and paste the list here. ( Bit long-winded but there is no other way :) )
  10. Hi Jim I have split this from the other thread. http://extremetechsupport.com/threads/12444-re-istallation-of-the-OS?p=80464#post80464 I will ask our Security Experts to advise.
  11. That's fine :) lets just check to see if you have any bugs on the system. Download MBAM from here: http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_pro Click on Products. You want the free version. Download > Install > Update and Run. It will produce a log. Copy and post this here please.
  12. Hi Jim I will be around for most of the day - so check back regularly :) Let me know how much RAM you have on the Vista machine. Start > right click Computer > Properties Also - which Service Pack is installed? This will be near the top. Start > Computer > right click C:| What Capacity Hard Drive and How much Free Space ?
  13. You say "if" .....?? Do you want to reinstall or try a clean-up ?
  14. No time wasted at all. Sometimes a format - reinstall is the only way to go :)
  15. Hi Jim The Operating System is actually licensed to the machine and not an individual. If the copy of Vista that you have ( The disk ) is installed on the machine then there is no problem at all with you wiping the drive and re-installing. If the copy of Vista (on the disk ) has not been installed on that machine but is installed on another machine then it would be illegal to have it on 2 systems. The same applies for XP. If the installation is already on one machine you cannot put it on a second. You do not need to get a copy of Win7. We could have a go at cleaning the machine up and getting it running better - this would take a few posts to complete ( quite a few if you have malware on the disk ). Let us know what you want to do :)
  16. Hi and welcome to ExTS
  17. You will be running out of teeth if J-B catches up with you :)
  18. Hi and welcome to ExTS I must admit that I have no experience of using a pc as a server - so my advice may be limited. It would help if you could let us know how your machine is set up. Which server software are you using? Have you updated the server software to the latest version?
  19. Hi and welcome to ExTS I would be inclined to take the Hard Drive out, connect it to an adapter or caddy and run CheckDisk on the drive. If you can post the STOP ERROR code this may help.
  20. Hi and welcome to ExTS I assume that you mean the problem computer used to have internet access ...... Is this correct ? Are you connect to the router wirelessly or by ethernet cable ? Do you get tthe same problem if you try both methods ?
  21. Hi and welcome to ExTS I am confused. You say you disabled the old one after installing the new Video Card. Surely if you put a Video Card into a PCIe slot the one you would have disabled would have been the onboard graphics ( i.e. a chip on the motherboard ) ? Are you confusing "onboard" with "new" ? =========== I am assuming that you now have a Video Card installed onto the motherboard. You have disabled the old "card" - was this actually on-board ( a single chip ) ? How did you disable it? Are you sure that you have the monitor cable connected to the new card and not the old on-board connection ?
  22. Hi Neville [="http:///?ui=2&ik=0eee6d23e8&view=att&th=132d731a227ef3c6&attid=0.1&disp=inline&realattid=f_gtf5zkbc0&zw"]https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=2&ik=0eee6d23e8&view=att&th=132d731a227ef3c6&attid=0.1&disp=thd&realattid=f_gtf5zkbc0&zw[/url] Connection problems.bmp 2305K View Download This is a part - copy of one of your links - it goes nowhere. What were you trying to link to? Start > type in ......devmgmt.msc ......ENTER Click the + next to Network Adapters What is listed? Are there any yellow exclamation marks or red Xs ?
  23. I wish you luck with this. It is not an easy course you have selected :) I have just had a look at an exam script ( Electronics ) that I wrote that has embedded photos etc in it. I wrote it in WORD and the 17 pages = 1.05MB. I then saved it as a PDF file. ( This is an option in WORD .....click on Save As and it is in a drop-down menu ). The resulting file is 252KB - a quarter of the original size. This would seem to be the way forward. =============== If you are scanning there should be an option to save it in PDF format. JPG is the format used by cameras and result in much bigger files. =============== I am not conversant with LaTeX. so cannot comment. I can see you having a problem inserting formulae and equations and there must be a simple solution. ( I can look into this further if you wish ? ) =============== You imply that you are going to write by hand and then scan the documents - is this correct? =============== Regarding your choice of computer I assume that you are buying a general purpose machine and not a gaming rig ? If this is the case then it is relatively simple. Your new machine will probably have Windows7 installed. This comes in a variety of options ( Home Premium / Professional / Ultimate ) They offer different features and are progressively more expensive. For general use Home Premium is fine. Win7 is available in 32Bit and 64Bit For general purpose 32Bit will be fine. 64Bit can process data faster. RAM is basically temporary memory. The more you have available, generally, the better and faster your system runs. 32Bit systems however have a 4GB cap - they will not recognise any more. 64Bit systems in theory can recognise up to 192GB but this is restricted by the motherboard ( often to 16 GB ) Video Cards Basically there are 2 types. Onboard Video - which is not a card but a chip attached to the motherboard. Video Card - this can be removed and fits into a slotted connection on the motherboard. If your chosen system has a Video Vard this is the better option. Video Cards come in a wide range of prices and quality. They are, however, better than onboard video. If your system specs show something like AMD Radeon HD 6250M Graphics and it is unclear if this is a card or onboard chip - simply Google it to find out. Processors ( CPUs ) can be confusing. Personally I would pay more attention to the Operating System / RAM / Video Card However, generally, the higher the number 2.2GHz / 3.0GHz etc, the better the processor. You may see 2 core / 4 core. Again, the more cores, generally, the better. The higher numbers indicate a faster processor. I hope this helps.
  24. Have you been banned from the site ? This would explain why you can't log on.
  25. Thanks for the feedback. Good to hear you are up and running again.
