  1. If you have no data that needs to be reclaimed then it may be beneficial to re-install Win7. Or backup any files etc. to an external drive. Take a look here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Installing-and-reinstalling-Windows-7 You would need to be sure that the DVD Drive is the first in the Boot Order in the BIOS. (I can explain how if necessary) The link explains about "Upgrading" and keeping your data. I don't think this would be an option as you are replacing the OS with the same OS - not an "upgrade". Be aware - if you go down this route all data / files / photos will be lost off the drive.
  2. Happy that worked for you :)
  3. Hi, and welcome to ExTS DVD drives have 2 lasers. One for CDs and the other for DVDs. It could be that the DVD one is problematic. I assume that all was well before the re-install of XP ? Try this: Start > Run ....type in ......devmgmt.msc ......ENTER Click the + next to DVD CDROM Right Click on the device > uninstall Reboot. Windows will detect new hardware and re-install the drivers ============= If this fails: take a look here: (Delete Upper and Lower Filters) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060 Try the FixIt button to download an auto-fix. You can edit the Registry manually - scroll down to the XP option.
  4. Hi and welcome to ExTS Let me know how much free space you have and the size of your hard drive. Start > Computer > Right click on C:\ > Properties ============ You say D:\ drive was a partition - I assume from your comment that it is not showing when you click on "Computer" along with C:\ ? Start > type in ......diskmgmt.msc .......ENTER Does D:\ show up here alongside Disk 0 ?
  5. Hi 12tom This machine, presumably, still comes with a warranty. It may be worth contacting the company that sold it to you and asking: 1. If, under the terms of the warranty, can you re-install Windows or does it need to be returned to them. ============ You say you have posted this same problem on other forums. 2. Did they check for Malware on your system ? 3. Do you have recovery Disks or a Full Installation Disk for your Win7 ? ============= Download MBAM from here: http://www.malwarebytes.org/ Click on Products - you want the free version. Install > Update > Run It will produce a log. Copy this and post it here. ================ If you cannot run it from Normal Mode - try Safe Mode Switch on and constantly tap F8 ( about once per second ) Select Safe Mode from the list of options. (graphics will look odd due to minimal drivers )
  6. Hi and welcome to ExTS It may help if you explained in a little more detail what you are trying to do. Could you tell us where you are based please?
  7. Hi Jennifer and welcome to ExTS Your original installation of XP may have come with Recovery Disks or a Full Installation Disk. 1. Do you have these? 2. Do you have the Win7 Installation Disk ? 3. If you do - is it installed on your other machine too? 4. What is the make and model number of the machine in question?
  8. Hi, I suggest that you contact your ISP and ask if they can throw any light onto this. I am out of suggestions as to what could possibly be causing this. Significantly you can connect via a proxy. Traceroute (tracert) fails at the last hop. You cannot ping the site(s) Alternative DNS settings don't allow you to connect. It doesn't appear to be IP Address related Adding the IP Address and the site to the Hosts file makes no difference. There is nothing in the Hosts file blocking access to the sites. Disabling AV and Firewall has no effect. Let me know what they say :)
  9. If that worked for you - why not reset the router to OpenDNS settings. There is no disadvantage. You could, if those settings work for you, contact your ISP and ask them if they can explain why their DNS settings are causing you problems.
  10. Hi, Just read your first post again. You said that you tried OpenDNS and it worked. Did you use the 208.67.222.222 208.67.220.220 settings as described in post 14 ?
  11. Let us know how it goes.
  12. Hi and welcome to ExTS Next time you get the Blue Screen make a note of the STOP ERROR and post it here - it pay help identify your problem. Try taking the RAM out and putting just 1 module in. ( 2GB ? ) Run the system for a time to test. If it crashes - change the RAM for a different module. Test out all of the RAM in turn.
  13. Hi, It doesn't look IP Address based either. (I have un-blocked the IP Address) I tried changing my settings to OpenDNS ( not my ISP settings ) This by-passes my ISP DNS. I have normal internet usage - however, I could NOT tracert or ping mymathforum.com I could tracert and ping other sites. So.... I tried using GoogleDNS - and this allowed me to ping and tracert the site. Lets give it a try on your system: Assuming Win7 Control Panel > Network & Internet > Network & Sharing Center > Change Adapter Settings ( left side ) > Click on the Connection > Properties Highlight Internet protocol V4 (TCP/IPv4) > Properties Here if you have a set value for DNS servers make a note of it. If it is set to Automatic - check the box below "Use the following ..." Make the Preferred DNS Server 8.8.8.8 Make the Alternate DNS Server 8.8.4.4 This forces your system to use GoogleDNS. Try connecting to the site again. If this doesn't do it at least we know it is not a DNS problem either.
  14. OK I have banned your IP Address from my website. See if you can successfully tracert and ping it now.
  15. Hi, This has got me scratching my head :) You say you can connect from a proxy server. Lets try something to see if it is connected to your IP Address. Try tracert and ping on the following site: http://www.kenspchelp.co.uk No need to post results - just let me know if you were successful. If you can succeed - I will then block your IP Address from the site ( temporarily :) ) And we can try again to see if we get the same result.
  16. Try adding this to your Hosts file: 50.22.14.115 www.mymathforum.com ( note .....there is a space after 115 ) This will be added underneath what is already there. You will need to open in Notepad by right clicking on Hosts ( not the .txt version if that is there ) Try connecting now. =============== If this doesn't do it try disabling the Firewall ( temporarily of course ) and the AV to see if they are blocking the site.

  18. Hi, The problem does not seem to lie with your system or your router. I have just run a tracert to the mymathforum and mine completed. Your trace is failing at the last hop. my #14 IP Address 173.192.18.131 is the same as your #16 ( ignoring the last number [133 in your case] ) Try tracert 50.22.14.115 ( this is the IP address of the problem site ) =================== Go back to the DOS prompt ( cmd ) and type: ping http://www.mymathforum.com ( space after ping ) Do you get 4 packets sent and received ?
  19. Hi Ash, Where are you downloading SP1 from? There is a stand-alone d/load here: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=30 Or you could try Start > All Programs > Windows Update If you still get the error can you post the complete error message please ?
  20. Hi, The MBAM log only showed up 1 infection - which has been dealt with. When you cannot connect to a site - are the other computers on the network affected in the same way? In other words - one cannot connect - so all cannot connect. Try this for me: When you have a site that you cannot connect to ...... Start > type in .....cmd ......(do not hit ENTER yet ) right click on the cmd that shows top left of screen. > Run as Administrator At the prompt type: tracert http://www.google.co.uk ( substitute your problem site for google shown here ) (there is a space after tracert) The first hop should be something like 1 3 ms 3 ms 3 ms 192.168.1.1 If you want to copy the tracert results: There is a small black icon top left ......right click > Edit > Select All Then right click on the icon again > Edit > Copy CTRL + V will paste it here.
  21. Yes - that's about it. There may also be some diagnostics available on the hard-drive manufacturers site.
  22. If you connect it to another system as described, we can run Checkdisk on it. CheckDisk can often fix problems with the drive as well.
  23. Hi and welcome to ExTS Check the Hosts file. C:\ > Windows > System32 > Drivers > etc Right click on the Hosts file > Open Open with Notebook. Are any of the sites affected listed here? Download MBAM from here: http://www.malwarebytes.org/ Click on Products .....you want the free version. Install - Update - Run It will produce a log. Post this here please.
  24. Hi and welcome to ExTS Thank you for the link to the other forum where you have been receiving help. This saves going over old ground. I would be inclined to take the hard drive out and connect it to another system. This will allow us to run some diagnostics on the drive and make sure that it is OK. You may also be able to get some of your data off it. You can do this with a hard drive to usb adapter similar to this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/SATA-Transfer-Adapter-Power-Drives/dp/B004ND4632/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1320140466&sr=8-2 You should then be able to access the drive as you would a memory stick. The drive will be 3.5 inch SATA ( smaller in laptops )
