  1. There is a good tutorial here: http://www.techtipsgeek.com/install-windows-from-usb-flash-pen-drive/559/
  2. Is this the RAM? http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?hl=en&biw=1345&bih=542&rlz=1W1ACAW_en&q=corsair+xms2+ddr2+2gb&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=13963316645639554412&sa=X&ei=WhXhTZiKBY2BhQex2p25Bg&ved=0CEgQ8wIwAQ# If so - it would seem to be compatible with the m/board specs and the scan. I have come across this before ( where the system doesn't like 2 new modules ) and the only solution was to return them. For some reason - together - the system is rejecting them. If Dalo is about he may have another suggestion.
  3. I would be inclined to try a USB Wireless Adapter. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002LC25LC/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_2?pf_rd_p=103612307&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B0002LHX8O&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=19M39FSAGNTKBJ5T8J6Z You can get them quite cheaply. Right click on the present wireless adapter in Device Manager and disable. Install the USB Adapter as per instructions. If this works then your internal Wireless Card is faulty.
  4. OK. One more thing to try before you pop in the recovery disks: You have two panels underneath the laptop. One of the contains the RAM modules. See here - page 18 ftp://ftp.support.acer-euro.com/notebook/aspire_1360/manual/as1360-uk.pdf Try taking the panel off ( you will need a small x head screwdriver ) The RAM cartridge should raise if you flip the lever. Take both modules out and switch on. It will not boot - but I am hoping for a different result to the black screen. Switch off. Try putting just one module in. ( no need to put the cover back ). Push the Ram back into position. Try booting. If still the same - swap the modules over - and try booting again.
  5. No problem :) OK - running on mains power only eliminates the battery ( sometimes they can short out internally and create problems ). Running on battery alone eliminates the Mains adapter ( charger ). You cannot access Advance Startup ( F8 ). This would have at least, let us try a couple of options. I am thinking that there are limited options left open to us - other than to try the Recovery Disks. This will return the Operating System to the condition it was in when the machine was bought - you will lose all data, files etc. There is a way to get access to your files etc. It involves taking the hard drive out of the machine and connecting it to another one. It is relatively easy ( no more difficult than taking out the battery ). Do you have files / data that you need to recover from the drive?
  6. Sorry - got distracted. Without the battery the laptop does not run at all??? Is the AC adapter showing an LED lit ? Does the laptop have a power LED lit ? ( with the adapter plugged in ) Try disconnecting the AC Adapter and run on just the battery. Does it boot now?
  7. Can you confirm that you started tapping F8 immediately you switched on. Please try one more time - tap the key a bit faster this time as there is only a small window to access the Advance Startup Options. Do you know where the battery is located? Sometimes it is at the back - sometimes underneath. My Acer has panel underneath and a release slide to unlock the battery. It will be a long narrow panel. Take the battery out and try booting with just the Power Supply. Do you get any writing before the Acer splash screen?
  8. Hi, This is a way of booting using minimal drivers etc. useful for diagnosing problems. It would have been on the same list as "Last Good ..." But you say you cannot access this. If this is XP - do you have the original installation CD ( not recovery disks ). It will look like this: http://pcblogger.net/images/stories/tutorialimages/Windows_XP_FULL_CD.jpg If you do it may be possible to do a Repair Installation - which will retain all of your data.
  9. Hi and welcome to ExTS :) I must state now - I do not use Win 2K. If you switch on and constantly tap F8 ( about once per second ) you should get the Advanced Startup Options. If you do.. Select "Last Known Good Configuration". If that doesn't do it - try "Safe Mode" Let us know how you get on.
  10. Is your signal quality on the laptop still 4 bars and not 5 ? Just point the screen curser at the monitor icon bottom right of screen. This will account for some of the discrepancy if it is not 5 bars. Run MBAM form here: http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html Remember to update it. Run it. It will create a log that may be needed later ( if it finds anything ). Malware can slow d/load speeds.
  11. Hi and welcome to ExTS Your Motherboard - is it P5KPL AM SE ? If so is this the spec? http://uk.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_775/P5KPLAM_SE/#specifications What is the exact spec for the RAM you bought? DDR2 / PC2 6400 ? Run a Crucial Scan and let me know what it recommends. http://www.crucial.com/uk/systemscanner/?click=true
  12. Do you have a cordless phone ? If so - try disconnecting the phone and try the d/l speed again. Disable the AntiVirus and Firewall. Run the Speedtest again. (remember to enable them again ) Results?
  13. Change the channel settings from your router software. 192.168.1.1 will get you there from the address bar. Password = admin Username = admin You don't need to make any changes with the adapter. ( at least I don't ) You may wish to try this software: http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/download/ It will tell you what channel your neighbours are broadcasting on - you can then try a different one.
  14. No - this is not the case. PSUs can cause random freezes / shutdowns / irregular startup problems etc etc. There is a test you can do if you have access to a decent voltmeter. See here: http://kenspchelp.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=10 There is a tester you can buy. http://www.maplin.co.uk/power-supply-tester-ii-48647 Alternatively you could have a local tech ( not a big store ) check it out. ========================== You could also try taking one of the RAM modules out and running on just one. If the system is OK - you have a faulty RAM. Swap them over if you still experience problems. This is worth a try -and it costs nothing :)
  15. Hi and welcome to ExTS Your signal quality is showing only 4 bars ( good ) and not 5 ( excellent ). Signal quality will affect the d/load speed. Try re-positioning the router. Take the laptop nearer to the router and see if this alters the quality. You could try changing the Channel. If a neighbour is using the same frequency this may affect your signal quality. At the moment yours seems to be set to Auto. Try Channel 7 or 11. You can always put it back to auto if you need to. Your Atheros AR9285 supports up to 150mbps.
  16. Hi and welcome to ExTS Sorry nobody replied to this sooner. I am assuming this is a desktop and not a laptop? My initial thoughts tend towards the Power Supply Unit. I did think that it could be RAM - but you say it runs normally once you boot up ? ========================== Does the Date and Time show up correct? Click on the time - bottom right of screen.
  17. Suggest that you post in Malware Infection Removal forum and explain what you have done so far. Put a link back to this thread for reference. You need to make sure your system is clean. One of the security experts will advise further.
  18. I have Vista Home Basic too - I have 10 or so options. One is Last Known ........ Safe Mode with Networking etc etc. Are you sure there are only 3 options ? With the greatest respect ... Registry "fix" programs are not a good idea. If you use a Registry Cleaner and delete the wrong key you could render your system inoperable. They cause more harm than good.
  19. If you are running Memtest you need to let it run for a good few hours. Has this improved? Is it normal ? And this - any better ? If these open OK with the "good" RAM - and adding the second slows the system down - it looks loke a replacement is in order
  20. Hi, 960MB ( probably 1GB RAM ) is fine for XP. From your first post you said that you had 1.92 GB free. The paging File is the Virtual Memory. There is a vast difference between 3MB and 1.92GB. ?????? How much free hard drive space do you have? My Computer > Right click on C:\ > Properties
  21. Hi and welcome to ExTS Have you tried "Last Known Good Configuration" from the list where you selected Safe Mode ?
  22. Hi Kenneth and welcome to ExTS from another Ken :) Try this: Control Panel > Internet Options > Advanced Click on the Reset button.
  23. If MBAM found 61 problems you really need your system checked out.
