Bob I am going to take a look at my Win7 machine to see where we can go from here. I will get back to you a.s.a.p. Do you not have internet access using Bob2 on the Win 7 machine ? Outside chance .... Switch on .....constantly tap F8 about once per second ..... select "Last Known Good Configuration" from the list of options.
-
Oh dear .... I was afraid that something like this may result. Can you boot up with Bob2 and have full use of the machine ? If so ....the original user account may be corrupt. If you can boot up with Bob2 ....do you see the Registry Backup on the desktop ? [ probably not :( ]

Do I HAVE TO accept windows 8.1 download?
KenB replied to PEV's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
There is Ray ..... click here [ Easier to give you a link than type it out ] Some versions of Win8 may not let you use the gpedit option. Win 8 support finishes Jan 2018 ....some time off yet. You can always update to 8.1 later if you wish. -
You may need to contact M-Soft but it shouldn't be a problem. Can you download and run Speccy please - click here You want the FREE version. After it gathers the system info click on File > Publish Snapshot Post the link it produces here please. It will give us temperatures and other information. You may need to do a couple at different times. What are you doing when the CPU hits 90 deg ?
-
Was this new ? It will be covered by the warranty if it is - also taking hardware out may invalidate any warranty. In 6 weeks ? What was the problem ?

Thanks Nev :)

Hi Try re-setting the BIOS to defaults This article explains - click here As this is a laptop you need to try the first option - hopefully your BIOS will have an option to reset defaults.

No problem Ray - thanks for letting us know :)

PS2 keyboard ?? This is the old - round socket type that plugs into the back of a desktop machine for instance. It is external - not an integrated laptop keyboard Try this first: Switch off. Unplug the mains adapter. Take the battery out. Hold the On / Off button in for 30 seconds. Replace the battery and mains adapter ( if you normally have this connected ) Boot up and test keyboard. ================== If the above doesn't help ....... Right click on the device [ in device manager ] > uninstall. Re-boot the machine. Windows should find the device and install the drivers for it.
-
Boot up normally ... Start > type in ......devmgmt.msc ...... hit ENTER [ don't leave the dot out ] Click the > next to keyboards .... 1. Are there any yellow exclamation marks or red Xs ? 2. What is listed there ?

Hi, I assume that your case is dust free ? Pay particular attention to the CPU fan and heatsink. [ I know that you have probably done this in the past - but it is worth checking :) ] Did you use the old CPU / heatsink on the installed m/board ? If so - it may be worth taking the heatsink off - thoroughly cleaning the old thermal paste off using rubbing alcohol or methylated spirit [ any pharmacy ] and replace the thermal paste. You only need a pea-sized amount .....spread this very thinly using something like the edge of a credit card. Does it perform any better if you leave the side panel off ?

Do I HAVE TO accept windows 8.1 download?
KenB replied to PEV's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Matt - welcome to ExTS :) Hi Ray, I resisted upgrading to 8.1 for ages as there seemed to be a lot of problems across the net after doing so. However, MS seems to have ironed out the bugs and upgrading is now less of a problem. If you do decide to upgrade - there is no going back. You could create an image ( using Nev's tutorial ) and if there were any problems or you decide that you don't like 8.1 you could use this. To be honest - you will not see any great difference between 8 and 8.1 -
Hi and welcome to ExTS I have deleted your other post as it was exactly the same as this one ....no need to post twice :) As a work-around ....do you have a USB keyboard that you can try ? If you boot up in Safe Mode ....does your keyboard work then ? Switch on and constantly tap F8 about once per second [ this doesn't work with Win 8 ] Select Safe Mode from the list of options.

This would be the date that your Win 7 was created on the install disk. I tried this on my Win 8 before I posted and it seemed OK I will try this on my Win 7 machine. EDIT: I have just tried this on my Win7 machine ....and all seems to be OK. I will get back to you on this one. Obviously something is not right. I don't understand this at all Bob. I will test it out on my Win7 machine too. EDIT: I have tested this on my Win7 machine ....... I only get one cmd ...it doesn't show cmd.exe ...but I get only one. Right click on this > Run as Administartor get me to an elevated command prompt with "Administrator" in the top left corner. [ see image below ] There may well be other options listed ....but there should be only 1 CMD. ========================= If you can get to an elevated command prompt [ Administrator in the top left corner ] try the following: You will probably see this ...... C:\Windows\System32 ..... I want to try the path that we wrote out a bit at a time to see what part it doesn't like So ... at the prompt type in ..... CD C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools ......now hit Enter. Remember there is a space after CD ....then no spaces at all. ....Sorry ...other than between Program and Files and Windows - Resource - Kits [ I hope this is clear Bob ?? ] Does it take you to the "Tools" folder without error ? It should show the path with a flashing curser .....no error messages.
-
Hi Bob I don't think that has done it properly. Is your machine running ok ? If so ....let's do it from an elevated command prompt. Start > type in ......cmd ...[ don't hit Enter ] right click on ....cmd.exe ...that appears left side of screen Click on "Run as Administrator" At the prompt type in ....CD C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools\registryfix.bat ................... [ there is a space after CD then no gaps ]
-
Take your time Bob. Get back to me tomorrow :)
-
That is correct. Next stage: Right click on the registryfix file > Copy Now click on C: > Program Files > Windows Resource Kits > Tools [ you need to click on Tools to open it ] Right click on the open Tools folder > Paste [ this should paste in registryfix ] Now use the back arrow ( top left ) and go back to the Tools Folder. You can open it again to check that the file is there. Now point the screen curser to the Tools Folder to highlight it. Hold the SHIFT key down and right click with the mouse. Click on Open a Command Window from Here You should now see C:\Program Files \ Windows Resource Kits \ Tools > Now type in ...registryfix.bat It should look like this ..... C:\Program Files \ Windows Resource Kits \ Tools > registryfix.bat If it does ......... hit ENTER It should then run the .bat file and reset the Registry Permissions. Fingers crossed all will be OK. If you are unsure about anything at all - ask please. Use the video link and make some notes if you wish. Remember - we have a different file name from the one in the video. Let me know how it goes. Note to other readers - You are advised to make sure that you have an image or clone of your hard-drive before attempting this process. Also backup the registry and save it to a memory stick / external-hard-drive.

Hi Bob Right click on the Desktop file > Properties It should say here "Type of File" .....Windows Batch File.bat If it doesn't ....and it says "Text" .....do the following: Right click on the file > Edit Click on File > Save As Make sure where it says "Save as Type" ...... "All Files" is showing and not "Text" Now make sure it says against File Name ...registryfix.bat ... [ you will have to add the ,bat again ] Click on "Save" You may be prompted that the file already exists ...... overwrite this. Check on the Desktop that "Properties" shows it as a .bat file and not text.

Wireless Connectivity without wireless NIC
KenB replied to davidrichards27's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi and welcome to ExTS :) If you don't have a wireless card installed have you thought about using a USB Wireless Adapter ? This would be a simple, and cheap, solution. examples here: click here -
Hi Ray System Restore: Hold down the Windows Key and hit the "S" key. Type in .... restore .... Click on "Create a Restore Point" ............this is for System Restore too. Click on "System Restore" ........click Next This should show the restore points available. ======================= Regarding illegal version of Windows .... You can find out when the OS was installed if you wish. Windows Key + S Type in ......command .....click on Command Prompt box. Type in ...... systeminfo ......hit enter You will get a lot of info ......including the install date. I think you said this machine was second hand ? The date will give you something to go on. Also you can check to see if the Operating System has been activated Windows Key + S Type in ...system ...click on the System Box It will tell you here at the bottom. or Windows Key + S type in pc info ..... click on the PC Info box It will tell you here too. If Windows is not activated this is probably why they told you not to use automatic updates.

Hi Ray I will add my two-penny worth too :) XP used to get slower and slower over years. This is well documented. In certain circumstances it would be better to re-install than mess about. Win 7 and more recently Win 8 are much better in this respect. Hard-drives are bigger, processors are faster and they tend not to slow down to the same extent. To say that you do not need critical updates is pain silly. It is like saying that your AntiVirus never needs updating. If you are using the internet then there is always a threat. This is small if you are using safe sites - but just being on-line leaves you open. Critical updates address problems as they arise and MS send these out specifically to update your system security. I can see one possible reason why they may want you to leave updates turned off. Sometimes installing updates causes problems. This can be resolved by doing a System Restore in many cases .....but if you are not aware of this who do you complain to ? The man with the degree in computer science. They may have taken this line because they had people coming back with complaints after installing updates. Either way - bad advice !!

[ It may be part of your browser - which one are you using ? ] We do appreciate your contributions Ray - thank you :) EDIT Just checked ......the board software uses your browser spell check You may need to enable it in your browser.

Thanks Bob --- we will do the next bit in stages. 1. Open Notepad [ Start > type in the Search Box .....notepad ..... ENTER ] 2. Copy the text below ... subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=administrators=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=administrators=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=administrators=f subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=administrators=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /grant=system=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CURRENT_USER /grant=system=f subinacl /subkeyreg HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT /grant=system=f subinacl /subdirectories %SystemDrive% /grant=system=f 3. Paste it into Notepad. 4. Click on File [ in Notepad ] and Save As ......... name it ...... registryfix.bat .... [ that is dot followed by bat ] Save it to the Desktop .....it is easier to find. 5. Confirm that you have the bat file by ............... right click on it on the Desktop > Edit It should have the text that you copied above there - 8 lines. Can you confirm when you have got this far please ?
