  1. Thanks Dougie :)
  2. Thanks Pete - ( it was yesterday :) )
  3. I requested that you limit this topic to one thread ........... This thread is now closed - continue with the other one only please.
  4. Hi I am sorry that you have not had any replies to your post here. If I may suggest another forum - you may get better responses there - click here Obviously we have no Nokia users here :( I hope you get your problem solved.
  5. Laptopdunce Let's keep it to one thread please - there is no need to have two threads running on the same subject. http://extremetechsupport.com/threads/16565-LAPTOPDUNCE-new-here?p=109585#post109585
  6. If we knew that the on-screen keyboard was working we could have advised further with the virus removal. Let us know how you get on :)
  7. Hi Mike This is very odd. In your first photo it shows the Samsung HD753 ... which is your hard drive. [ on SATA 2 ] In the last photo [ the Boot Order ] it is missing ?? Do this please ... Switch off at the wall socket and leave the plug in. [ This maintains the earth connection to the motherboard ] Open up the case and locate the 2 DVD drives. Trace the connections back to the motherboard and disconnect them. [ Make sure that the loose wires are secured and will not get caught in any rotating fan ] Now trace the hard drive connection back to the motherboard and move this from SATA 2 port to SATA 1. [ It should be labelled ] Try booting up now. If this fails move the hard drive connection to SATA 3 [ we know this one picks up one of the DVD drives ] If it isn't booting can you go back into the BIOS and see if the Samsung drive is showing in the Boot order [ photo number 3 ] when it is connected to either SATA 1 or SATA 3 on the motherboard.
  8. Can you start up in Safe Mode ? Switch on and tap ( very fast ) F8 Also try SHIFT + F8 With Win 8 and 8.1 it is very difficult to catch the Advanced Startup Options because the system is booting up so fast. If you can get to the Advanced Startup Options ....boot up in Safe Mode. Then try a System Restore to a date prior to installing Avast. Also try a USB keyboard if you have one.
  9. I'm sorry - we cannot assist with this.
  10. i5 Processors come in a range - click here [ 1.9 -3.5 GHz ] Also the number of "Cores" influence the speed. But to answer your question - you will find the i5 a very quick processor compared to what you are using with your XP machine. Also RAM influences machine speed. If the Operating System is 64 bit then 6 - 8 GB would be more than ample. This, of course, has no influence at all on sound quality.
  11. Hi and welcome to ExTS Firstly - no laptop will produce "good" quality sound. I have an Acer and when I want to listen to music I use headphones. This produces a much better result than listening through the laptop speaker. The quality of the headphones will also have a bearing on the sound quality. A desktop machine can accommodate a sound card. This would produce far better sound output. Again - sound card quality varies. A laptop will use an on-board chip for sound. I know you want a laptop - I am just using this as an example. You need to look for a "Multimedia" laptop if you want to play sound through the internal speaker. You could hook up a set of speakers for better sound quality. As I have already said - no laptop will give excellent sound direct from the internal speaker.
  12. You are welcome - if you have any more questions you know where we are :)
  13. Hi and welcome to ExTS :) You are asking a very difficult question :) It is difficult to suggest to somebody how to spend their money - and how much to spend. There is a review of different printers here - click here And also here - click here Look at the price that you want to pay - and also the review rating. From what you describe - you need an "All in One" printer. You also have to decide if you are going to connect the printer direct to your computer - using a wired connection. Alternatively you could have a wireless connection. This type is more convenient if you have a laptop - but they are generally more difficult to set up. Get back to us if you have any questions.
  14. Hi Can you try the monitor on another PC ? This will tell you if the problem lies with the monitor or your system. This depends what extent you want to go to. 1. Do you wish to spend money on this system ? If so - how much ? 2. How old is this system ? 3. Is it VERY slow ? Do programs take a while to load ? Is it slow to boot up ? [ give us some times ] 4. How much RAM do you have ? 5. I assume that this is XP ? If so - are you running SP3 ? Give as much information as you can please.
  15. hi Mike This is very strange - especially as you have 97 posts. You are, of course, posting correctly. Post it again .....then before you hit the "Post Quick Reply" copy what you have written and paste it into a PM to either Nev or myself. ( click on my name ( or Nev's ) > Private Message ) Was this a very long post? There is a limit. If so ...... share it over two posts.
  16. Nothing in the thread from last night Mike - not even "unapproved" ( hidden ) Can you post it again please ?
  17. Hi Jim Take a look here - click here if you opt to use CCleaner for Option 2 do not use the Registry Cleaner option.
  18. Hi Trevor Thanks for getting back to us. I will mark this as "Solved" :)
  19. Hi Jim I took a look at that video on "How to Use the Compound Bow" The sound on the video was muted by default. Point the screen curser to the bottom of the video. If there is an X next to the speaker icon the sound is muted. Simply click on the speaker icon to give sound. Hope this helps :)
  20. Good policy :) You know where we are if you need us :)
  21. Hi Firstly select the drive that you wish to scan ... this will be C: After the software locates your deleted files do the following .... [ you can search specifically for pictures ] 1. select the files that you want to recover by ticking the small boxes on the left 2. Click on the "Recover" button 3.The box in the centre will pop up for you to select where you want to save the files to. 4. Select your Memory Stick if this is where you want to recover the files to. You should be able to recover to C: drive if you wish but this is not recommended. 5. Click OK
  22. If you are linking the SATA drive via IDE there may be a couple of options. Your present IDE drive will be set as Master. If you are sharing this cable then set the "SATA" drive to Slave. If the "SATA" drive has its own cable and motherboard connection then this will be set to Master. Basically - if the "SATA" drive is sharing a cable then set it to "Slave" There is a good explanation here - click here If you get it wrong you will do no damage to the drive :)
  23. Hi There are various adapters on the market. You could look at something like this - click here [ be sure to read any reviews for your chosen product :) ]
  24. I don't think so. If the computer is running OK - booting up OK - then there is nothing to worry about. Regarding the CMOS battery that Nev mentioned ... is your date and time showing correctly in the bottom right corner of the screen ? If so - then I would suggest that the CMOS battery is OK too. If it was as low as the reading suggests the date and time would be messed up.
  25. This is VERY odd ! We have two different pieces of software - each showing EXACTLY the same voltages to 1/1000 of a volt ??? We have 8.88v on the +12 / -12 / and -5v rails. How odd. This cannot be correct. ( Unless there is a short somewhere ...but you would have problems if this was the case ) mumblebee - do you have a voltmeter or can you borrow a voltmeter ? The check is simple - take a reading direct from the 20(4) way connection on the motherboard. I wrote a tutorial on checking a PSU some time back - but this one is much clearer - click here I assume that the system is running ok? Booting up fine? No long delays booting up ?
