Sony Vaio laptop: Frozen PC & vertical lines on screen
KenB replied to r0adrunner's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi, Try this ... Start > in the box type .......cmd .....DO NOT hit ENTER yet ........ now right click on "cmd.exe" that appears top left of screen > now click on "Run as Administrator" This will take you to the "elevated" command prompt. See Nev's post #4. -
Hi and welcome to ExTS You can assume that your system does NOT support Miracast if it is not showing when you click on "Project" and "Add a Wireless Display" is not there. I have Win 8.1 ( upgraded from Win 8 ) I do not have "Add a Wireless Display" either. The TV must support Miracast too. You can get adapters - click here I don't know anything about Miracast so further advice may be limited.

Your post count shows 1 - I assume that you have re-registered using a different forum name ?

Hi Bringe If the Router has a wireless option then there really isn't a problem. They often come with a CD with the drivers on. You should make sure, if buying one, that it does. You can do this if you wish. According to the specs I found you have 3 PCI slots. You would need a PCI Ethernet Adapter. You also have a micro-motherboard ( smaller than standard ) You may be best getting a low-profile card. click here It is not that straight forward. Just popping it into the second machine will not allow it to boot up. Windows would be looking for drivers etc. from the old motherboard - it doesn't find them - so refuses to boot. XP is especially fussy. If you have a full install disk it is possible to get Windows to recognise the new environment by doing a Repair Install. This does not work with Recovery Disks. Also the version of Windows that you have on the new Hard Disk must be exactly the same as on the CD. If you have a full installation disk we can walk you through the "Repair" process.

Thanks for being so understanding :)

Amazing shots Nev :)

Hi Bringe This is an odd one !! Does your router have a wireless capability ? If so .... I suggest that you try something like this - click here I assume that you do have a USB port ? I am sure that the drivers I linked you to are the correct ones for your motherboard - so I am unsure as to what the problem is.
-
Hi Bringe Your motherboard is a Foxconn N1996 It was fitted into Hewlett Packard machines - amongst others. According to the specs I found - the NIC is Realtek RTL8101L The drivers are here: click here I am assuming that your system is 32 bit. If it is 64 bit we will need to find the appropriate drivers I think.

A little progress anyway :)

Hi Johnboy63 Re: DVDShrink This software can be used for copying DVDs ( I assume that is what you intend to use it for ) The problem with it is, as I see it, the software can be used to circumvent copyright on DVDs too. It could be used for copying Films / Games etc. This is a quote from the DVD Shrink site: I am not an expert in copyright law but I do know that in the UK it is illegal to duplicate copyrighted material. I am not suggesting that this is what you are going to use the software for - but from our position we cannot be seen to be providing links, or assisting in any way, to duplicate copyright material. I hope you understand why we cannot assist any further with this particular question.

Hi again Is this a desktop machine? If it is: open up the side panel and take a look at where the Ethernet ( Internet ) cable would connect. If this is an actual card then you should be able to see a Make and Model Number on it, If it is on-board - an integrated part of the motherboard itself - then see if the motherboard can be identified. There should be a Make and Model number on it. From that we may be able to identify the Network Device.

I did suggest that the Registry "fix" would not solve your sound problem. The fix was for the Toredo Tunneling problem. I assume that as you have altered the setting back to what it was you still have the Toredo Tunneling error message ?
-
Hi Did you follow the Registry fix - and did it solve the "Toredo Tunneling Device" problem ?

Hi Jackie and welcome to ExTS Barracuda is not a virus - it was probably put on your machine along with something else you have installed. Take a look here: click here This should help. Also ...another option.... Revo-Uninstaller is excellent at removing installed software. click here You want the FREE option at the bottom of the left hand column. Last time I checked there was no additional software installed with this but just check carefully as the install goes through and un-check anything that is not wanted. Let me know how you get on - or if you have any further questions :)

Desktop has stopped connecting to the internet

I'm surprised that AdwCleaner solved your problem. But all's well that ends well :) -
Hi Bringe On the machine that can connect to the Net ... Click on the Intel NIC link. Make a note of the File Name. You should get an option to "Run" or "Save As" Select "Save As" Then select the Desktop as the location > click OK This will save the drivers file to your Desktop. You will then need a Memory Stick. Plug this into the USB Port of the machine and go to My Computer It will show there as a drive letter - E: for instance and maybe a name too. Click on this to open it. In the top right corner there will be two small squares one behind the other. Click on this to minimise but you should still be able to see the contents of the Memory Stick on screen. You can move this around using the blue bar across the top. You need to be able to see the Drivers file. Left click and hold on the drivers file, Drag it into the Memory Stick and release the left button. The Drivers File will be copied to the Memory Stick. Use the Memory Stick in the problem computer to install the NIC Drivers. You should simply click on the File and it should install. If anything - there may be a file to click on. This will be the "Set-Up" file. This sounds a lot more complex than it really is :)

[Solved ]Advent 8117 laptop - Internet slow
KenB replied to georgeriley139's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
You had me going for a second :) Glad to hear that things are working as they should. You could try uninstalling Chrome if you particularly want to use that and then re-install it. Otherwise FireFox is not a bad browser. -
Hi, Thanks for the photos. You have a Hewlett Packard Compaq dx 2300 The drivers are here: click here The Network Drivers have Belkin Wireless and Intel NIC ( which would be for a cable ) Give these a try. Try the Realtek High Definition Audio driver also. Any other drivers you need should be there too.

Try FireFox. There could be a specific problem with Chrome on your machine - if not ....no harm done. -
[Solved ]Advent 8117 laptop - Internet slow

Hi George Do you have a different browser to try ? I suspect you are using Internet Explorer. If this is the case install FireFox. click here Give this a try and let me know how you get on. You can have more than one browser on your system at a time. -
No problem at all. Most people in your shoes think they will do serious damage if they get things wrong. This is rarely the case. If you have another question - or even if you want to carry on with this one - we will take it in small steps :)
-
Hi Bringe, It looks like all you need is the appropriate drivers. XP ( if it is XP ) does not come with many embedded drivers - unlike Win 7 for instance. If this is a bought PC can you let us know the make and model number please ? We may be able to locate the missing drivers for you. ========== I think you said in the other thread that this hard drive was "failed" by the Seagate test. If this is the case I would be very sceptical about using this drive.

Desktop has stopped connecting to the internet
KenB replied to Chancer's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Chancer and welcome to ExTS You mention Ethernet Connection ...but not wireless. Do you have a wireless adapter for this machine and have you tried it ? ======== Start > type in the Search Box ....network ....click on the Network and Sharing Center that will appear top left. Now click on "Connect to a Network" that is on the left side of screen. 1. Can you see your Network listed? 2. If you click on it to connect > do you get asked for the Access Code ? 3. If you type in the password - do you get access ? ======== If the above didn't work ...... Start > ...type in the Search Box .....devmgmt.msc ......ENTER Click on the > next to Network Adapters. 1. What is listed ? 2. Are there any yellow exclamation marks or red Xs ? =========== With the Ethernet Cable connected: Start > type in ......cmd .....now right click on cmd.exe that will appear top left of screen Click on "Run as Administrator" At the command prompt type in ........ ping 127.0.0.1 .....ENTER ..[ there is a space after ping ] You should get 4 packets sent > 4 Received > no losses If you do try the following: ping www.google.com again you should get 4 packets sent and received .....no losses I suspect that this will fail. Next try ping 192.168.1.1 [ not sure if this is correct for Home Hub but give it a try ] This should try to communicate with your router. Again you should get 4 packets sent and received > no losses. Let me know the results of the above. ============ I warn you now that this may be a long thread. There are so many variables it may take time to locate the problem. Please ensure that you answer all of the above :) Does the Home Hub have a model number or is it simply as you state - 5th Generation ? -

Hi George, 3.7 Mb/s is not brilliant ....but it is good enough. 1. - Can you run the speedtest on one of the other PCs to compare with the one you are having problems with please ? http://www.speedtest.net/ 2. Let's check to see if you have any malware on your machine that is slowing it down. Please download MalwareBytes onto the problem machine. Follow the directions here: click here Just follow step 1 that relates to MalwareBytes. Post the results of the scan here please. ================ Just a note: From past experience locating the problem with slow / problematic internet is a slow process as there are so many variables. -
Nev is correct. I have altered my original text ....... you need to click on "PARAMETERS" itself - not the > to the left of it. ( sorry for the confusion ) I too have checked and I do not have "Disabled Components" at this point. It looks as if you do - so run through the instructions above and check. Make the changes if necessary. Click OK and re-boot. Ask as many questions as you need to :)
