When I run Microsoft update, it changes the link speed on my NIC from Auto Negotiate to 1oo Mbps Full Duplex. This slows down the speed of my NIC considerably and is extremely annoying as I need to and change the link speed on each PC I am imaging manually. This setting should not be getting changed anyway, when I run the NIC update from HP's site, it keeps it at Auto Negotiate. This needs to be changed. View this thread

I have now done a complete factory restore following your helpful instructions as I was having severe issues with my Compaq desktop, Vista 32 bit pc. I am now trying to update Windows, but am not able to install KB94656 - error code 80070490 (this is the only update that will not install - others failed at first, but then were successfull. I have tried FIXIT and System Update Readiness tool and the final option was to repair Windows, but I am not sure what the Help tool means by "insert the Windows DVD" - is it the factory backup discs I did when I first purchased my pc? If it isn't, can I go to the Restore Manager to do it? Also, once I have done all updates, should I upgrade to IE8 before upgrading to IE9 or can I just go straight to IE9? Thanks for previous help and hope you can help me for this one. View this thread

When I first got my laptop (6 weeks ago) I could send and receive emails no problem, same with restarting, also had a problem opening/viewing attachments. Now I can only send but not receive, it starts downloading the emails VERY slowly but never completes, I can't view or open attachments and when I restart it just hangs on the 'restarting' page so I have to shut down completely. When this problem happened initially I shut down and it worked again. I have tried shutting down 5 times this morning but it still won't work. I have read on forums that this is caused by updates not completing properly, which would explain why the first time I had this problem it worked again after shutting down. I have also read it's because this system doesn't support POP only IMAP accounts, but if this is the case why did it work before? I would really appreciate an answer asap :) View this thread

After I installed Office 2010 Professional (32-bit), Windows Update is offering me 31 "Important Updates", several of which seem totally unrelated to the Microsoft software I actually have installed in my Control Panel on Windows 7 SP1 (64-bit);The doubtful updates are:- KB2687417 - Security update for InfoPath 2010 32-bit Service Pack 1: October 9, 2012- KB2566445 - Security update for SharePoint Workspace 2010 32-bit 05/04/2012- KB2598287 - Security update for Visio 2010 Viewer 32-bit 29/08/2012- KB2553406 - Outlook Social Connector update 32-bit April 10, 2012- KB2589371 - SharePoint Workspace 2010 update 32-bit November 13, 2012 Are they really important for the other Office 2010 applications that I do have? Should I install them? (I know I can hide them, but if they are needed then I prefer to know it and install). For Windows 7 there is also an "Optional" update offered, that I am not sure if I need:- KB2592687 - Remote Desktop Protocol 8.0 update for Windows 7 SP1 x64 23/10/2012 (it turns out that it also requires hotfix 2574819 installed as a Prerequisite); My standalone computer is not part of a network or domain, and the only use of Remote Desktop would be for accessing XP Mode on Virtual PC from this Window 7 SP1 computer, so - should I install the "Optional" updates KB2592687 and hotfix 2574819? Please advise. View this thread

The Go.Microsoft.com reference site to this security update is non-existant and automatically takes me to a non relevant site. I've tried the support check Windows Utility and it successfully repaird something but still no change on my attempts to update. I attepted to change my startup throught the msconfig utility but it still fails. I've cold booted my computer with no change. I've turned off Nortons 360 during the download and update and still no change. In the automatic update mode it tries every night and shows me the failed message in the morning. View this thread

I have a new laptop with Windows 8. I try to activate Windows Defender by clicking its icon and all I get is a dialog stating that Defender is de-activated.The only option in the dialog box is to close. How do I activate Defender? I tried setting it to automatic in the services but that didn't help. View this thread

I can't open Microsoft Security Centre or Windows Defender. It opens for a second and then shuts down. In control panel --> administrative tools --> services - both programs show up as "disabled." When I change them to "automatic" --> apply --> restart - they change back to disabled automatically. I have run the microsoft free virus scan and have removed 4 files that were deemed infected. I have defragmented the hardrive and deleted temporary internet files. Nothing has helped solve this issue. Any help you could offer would be great. View this thread
