I have bought the promotion of Win8 for existing Win7 customers. Now after I have downloaded and installed I wanted to enter the product key. Unfortunately it tells me that the key is invalid since I have done a fresh install. I wonder how a commercial topic can dictate how I technically install my software. I had to do a fresh install in order to get rid of all waste I had on win7. is it please possible to check the win7 key and allow me in return to use the win8 key. I was even surprised because the purchase confirmation which I have through the email hereafter does not talk about an upgrade restricted key. can you please help me in finding a solution. The first thing I noticed was that my PC kept turning itself off if I went away from the computer - if I pressed the power-on button it came on again - so no problem. Then after a couple of weeks it suddenly turned itself off whilst I was using it and I couldn't turn it back on again. I thought it was the Bios so I removed the little battery and returned it after about 20mins - still no joy. Then I pressed the F2 key whilst turning on the PC and then the screen told me that it was starting the default Bios which was great - just changed the system date and everything seemed to be fine. But then after a while the PC turned itself off again and a message appeared that it could not return from hibernation.... I have gone to the power settings and changed what I thought was causing the problems to 'never'. My PC is almost two years old and has never behaved like this before. I have only installed the updates. Should I do a restore or have I done the right thing by changing the settings? I do not know exactly what the settings should be for a desktop computer or what they were before the updates. I tried returning it to the default settings but that removes all the 'never' flags and says yes to hibernation etc. I do not leave the PC turned on all the time - just turn it on and off as and when I need to. I would be grateful if someone could tell me what the correct settings should be? View this thread

I am getting continuously repeated reminders for installation of the above update (KB2538242). I have checked my update history and now find KB2538242 is reported as installed successfully on innumerable occasions since first installation record dated 17/06/11, but it does not appear on the installed updates list when viewed from the control panel. The update history records the previous Visual C++ update KB2467175 as being installed successfully initially on 14/04/11 and again on 14/05/11, but the same as for the above item KB2467175 does not appear on the installed updates list when viewed from the control panel. Because neither of these updates appear on the list of installed updates from the control panel view I do not get the option to uninstall them. The only reference to Visual C++ 2005 that I can find in my installed programmes list from the control panel refers to M/S Visual C++ 2005 ATL update KB973923. I am using Vista Business on a 32 bit operating system and running Office 2000, but now find that since the last attempted update installation of KB2538242 the Word programme is not responding. I have tried using Microsoft FixIt for the update, and I have tried System Restore. FixIt didn't make any difference, and System Restore failed for unidentified reasons on 2 occasions. Can anyone suggest any further solution please. Regards, MarconMarine View this thread

Purchased new Dell XPS 8500 September 08, 2012, came pre-loaded with Windows 7 Ultimate. Restored all my contacts, files, etc on new Dell. Attempted to install Windows 8 Pro Upgrade via cdrom from Microsoft around January 07, 2013. System went into a permanent boot loop and no way to get out. Called Microsoft and Microsoft India attempted to get out of the problem but without a Windows 7 cdrom to boot from nor the Drivers. Microsoft India advised to cal Dell Canada to get Windows 7 Ultimate cdrom and the Dell Drivers. Called Dell Canada, they ran diagnostics on my hardware, everything clean so they forwarded me to Dell India Software Support who said I needed a Software Maintenance Contract for $270.00 CDN so I could get their Windows 7 Ultimate cdrom and Dell Drivers! Had no choice so I paid via Visa. Two days later got cdroms. Microsoft India called and started the process of reloading Windows 7 and Windows 8, taking the updates which put the system into permanent boot loop for the third time. Also found out that wonderful Dell India ordered and delivered the wrong Windows 8 (Home Version) instead of Ultimate. Dell India re-orders Windows 7 Ultimate whic arrived two days later. Microsoft India did the Win 7 and Win 8 thing again a few times more, eachh time it took about 45 minutes to get to Win 8 and the updates again putting the system into boot loop. Microsoft India then decided to do a cold format (lost everything) as I intended to do the backup after my first install of Windows 8. Reloaded Win 7, Win 8, took updates, same boot loop. After Microsoft India trying numerous more times to install Win 7 and Win 8 without succes, MS India said Windows 8 and the subsequent updates (KB2770917) on a Dell XPS 8500 will not work and that it may be a Dell BIOS issue. After both Dell India and Microsoft India gave up without anyone owning up to the problem. I decided to do another cold format, install Windows 7 Ultimate, take all the Win 7 updates and lock away Windows 8 untill either Dell or Microsoft calls back. It has been over 8 days and no calls. I spent 19 hours on the phone over six days, reloaded Win 7 and Win 8 under Microsoft India control in excess of 10 times each time taking about 45 minutes. Adding insult to injury, Dell India has $270.00 of my money to get MY Windows 7 ultimate cdrom and MY Dell drivers which I paid for when I ordered the system. This is not the way to conduct business. I purchased two Dell PCs prior to my Dell XPS 8500 but this will definitely be my last. The whole process leaves a bitter taste. I am no expert so some of the recommendations I read in the Forum are not in my intermediate level of expertise. I will need Microsoft India to initiate the fix by taking control of my PC like they did for the 19 hours, but only after they can guarantee me that the Microsoft Windows 8 KB2770917 problem on my Dell XPS 8500 has been successfully resolved. My question is: Who (Dell or Microsoft or both) will resolve this Windows 8 update issue on a Dell XPS 8500 and WHEN will it be forth coming? Running Windows 8 on a Lenovo Thinkpad Twist, not an upgrade from an older OS, computer was built for Windows 8. Recently did a refresh on my PC and afterwards I am now unable to change settings in Windows Update, get the same message others have posted about "Some Settings are managed by your administrator". I am the only user on this computer and the administrator, not a member of any domain. I have already run the troubleshooter, no issues found, I have created a different admin account and logged in under those credentials, no luck, and I have enabled the built in Administrator account using command prompt and logged in using those credentials, same message as when using my default account. I am running Kaspersky Internet Security 2013 and have tried disabling this but still get the same message. Also, Windows Update history is empty even though all updates have been applied, if I select "See Installed Updates" they all show, but the Windows Update History link returns a blank page with the message "You have not installed any updates". Any ideas? Thanks in advance,...............Joe View this thread

hello, I just bought a new laptop carrying windows 8 and every time i get the message requesting i restart my system to install the latest changes, i get stuck on the "restarting screen" for hours. On 2 occasions i waited 4 hours until i finally decided to simply power down and restart , i even got a message the first time telling me the system would be done with updating/installing in 2 days.... i dont think its caused by a slow system as i run a hp Pavillion ( ENVY m6 ) with a 1.9 Ghz processor and 8 Gigabytes of RAM, it seems like plenty to me... is there anyway i can have at lease a "status bar" on the restarting screen, that way at lease it would tell me if the system froze or is actually doing something? Or better yet is there a way to FIX this issue at all? i remember long updates on vista but the worst i had was about 2 hours... thank you View this thread

I installed Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 on my laptop which runs Windows 7 64bit. Everything was fine until I started updating my laptop with the latest updates. After installing all the updates, IE 10 will not go to any website and continues to say "Page can't be displayed" for anything. I uninstalled IE 10 and reinstalled and same issue. I then did a System Restore back before updating my laptop and then went through one by one installing updates to see if I could find an issue with one of the updates. After much time, I found that "Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 for x64-based Systems (KB2729452)" is the issue. I installed all other updates besides that one and IE 10 still works fine. I did test (KB2729452) and it gave me the issue again. Is this update very necessary to have? Others have this same issue?
