  3. I'm installing a new home based small business server. After working fine for many updates and reboots, Windows Update just stopped connecting to the net on my new Windows Server 2008 64bit machine. LAN settings are set to automatic as per instructions. Internet Explorer now seems to be blocked out regardless of what I try or what security setting that I lower. Dianose is frozen and does nothing. However, the eithernet connections to the internet work fine with normal PCs. Please help. Clif View this thread
  4. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit on a Lenovo ThinkPad E530. This laptop is only brands new. KB954430, KB973688 & KB2538243 - These three updates keep giving me problems. In Windows Update, under "view update history" these keep showing up as failed. I also get the error, "Code 643". At the end of the installation it tells me three updates are failed to be installed and when I shut down to try to update, Windows always configures up to ~15%, then fails, and reverts changes, then prompts me to install updates the next time I turn my computer on. Each time, I have to re-install every update that I had installed prior to shutting down. I went through Trouble shooter - "Fix it" numerous times, Repaired Net framework profile and also followed few instructions I found from the net such as running "Reset Register Windows update Components" but nothing works so far. I even tried manually installing KB954430 but it told me "An error occurred during the installation of assembly component. 7B30B69B-OE6C-B7EO-A06B-D6B9ABF34537 HR RESULT: 0 x 80070BC9" and the installation bar seems to stop at "Publishing View this thread
  5. I recently purchased the Windows 8 upgrade to my computer. I had been running the Windows 8 beta version, but my license has just expired. My original operating system was Windows Vista. Everything was going smoothly with the install until my computer froze. After rebooting, I tried clicking the Windows 8 download icon from my downloads folder. It asks for admin approval to begin and I click 'yes'. After that nothing happens. When I try clicking on the download button again, it tells me it is already running, but it doesn't show up in the task manager and nothing happens (even after several hours). Restarting again hasn't helped. How can I resolve this? View this thread

  7. With this new update I am not able to access the bios. I am very mad about this and do not know what to do. When I search online it tells me windows 8 is going to integrate this UEFI bullshit, why would you skip the bios? Is there anyway I can fix this? And don't say, use advanced restart, it doesn't do ****. View this thread
  8. Recently after receiving a whole bunch of windows, office and other upgrades the Networking and sharing center stopped working. All I get at the bottom of the desk top screen is the wifi symbol with a red x on it. When I open the center it says I have no connections. However the computer is connected and I am on line with the web and email. So there is some sort of disconnect that has occureed. How do I go about reestablishing this function? View this thread
  9. I received a cast off system from my son. It had been on the shelf for about a year, and I am trying to resurrect it. Interesting and useful information: OS = Windows Vista Home Premium SP 2 (32 bit) Browser = IE 8.0.6001.19088 AV = McAfee (Scan disabled) and license expired, but firewall active Windows Defender (active) PC Tools Registry Mechanic - expired Last Installed Update = KB2478660 7/2/2011 Problem: Windows Update returns an error of 80070002 and refuses to load any updates In an attempt to resolve this I have done the following: 1. Stopped the Windows Update Service Deleted temporary update files Restarted Windows Update Service 2. Run the SFC utility "sfc /scannow" results = "There is a system repair pending which requires a reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run again" Restarting Windows displays a "Configuring Updates 3 of 3" window that never gets resolved 3. Run the System Update Readiness utility (manually) results = no errors detected 4. Run the Fixit program Running gently said that it fixed things, but running it repeatedly kept saying the same thing. Nothing changed - that I could detect. Running agressively was interesting: The Configuring Updates ... message moved from the system shutdown environment where it was harmless to the system startup environment where it caused an infinite series of re-boots. I had to revert to an earlier restore point. to be able to stop the re-boot sequence. Interestingly the "Configuring ... " message stayed on the startup environment. It just no longer forces a system restart. 5. I have tried to manually delete the pending.xml folder, but even logged in as a Administrator, I lack the permissions to delete or modify the file I would appreciate any suggestions. View this thread
  10. I had 10 updates available and I decided to restart it while updating the laptop, but then it kept on showing the "restarting" loading thing on the screen for more than an hour. What does that mean? Should I wait or remove the battery then re-turn it on? The model is a 7246 us windows laptop View this thread
  11. I have desktop computer with Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit installed on it. I have two partitions on the HDD - one with 9 GB and one with 457 GB. I have two questions: 1. Can I also install Windows 8 on the same computer, without removing Vista - i.e. I have a choice which OS to use when I boot up? Or will installing Windows 8 overwrite Windows Vista? 2. I have MS office 2010 installed on Windows Vista. Will I be able to install and run it on Windows 8 as well? Thanks for your help. Cheers, Rajeev View this thread

  13. I ran a file that I thought was from Frontier online backup, I know that was not smart. It made a diagnostic file, or so it said, and place on my desk top, again without thinking I tried to open it, no luck. So then I goggle it... a place called F-secure wants me to attach it and send it to their support site. In a smarter move I stop every thing and ran Norton and Microsoft Security essentials... Norton only shows tracking cookies and Microsoft Security will be a while, I am running the full scan. Does anyone know what the file is? Please go easy on me this is my first request for help K View this thread

  20. I have an HP i7-2600S Desktop Computer. When I turned on my computer today, it appeared to be installing updates. After it booted and I logged in, I noted that the Modern UI start screen looked completely different than I had left it. All of my apps were gone and the background looked different. The only apps on the screen were desktop, store, internet explorer and file explorer. When I went to my desktop it also looked different. The desktop background was different and my desktop shortcuts were gone. When I opened file explorer all of my favorites and mapped drives were gone. When I opened my browser, I was logged out of all of the sites I am normally logged onto. It appears that all of my files are still available. Many of the apps that startup when booting were not running, such as dropbox, Malwarebytes, air video server, etc. I am afraid to set everything up again in case this happens again. I did a scan with Windows Defender and no virus were found. View this thread
