I want to upgrade my laptop from win xp pro sp2 to win 8 pro. I have attempted to do this online and am told the upgrade is not supported. I assume thlis is because I need to get to win xp pro sp3. However, when I attempt to run Windows Update to see what updates are outstanding, I get the message that I cannot go to that web page with error 0x80240036. In other words I cannot update my xp pro beyond where it currently is, sp2. View this thread

HELP Please. I have Vista Home Premium SP2. I am trying to install the "Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows Server 2008 x86 (KB2742597)". I have tried every technical solution posted in the Knowledge Base, including the complete deletion and reinstallation of .NET, I've tried: "Method 1: Fix MSI software update registration corruption issues". "Method 2: Repair the .NET Framework" which includes the ".NET Framework Cleanup Tool" aka "dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip". "System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista (KB947821) [November 2012]" I've even tried every suggestion from the first 15 pages of this community post. I am able to install every update that comes across except this one. Biggest question is, if I have all the latest .NET, do I really need this? If so, any other suggestions for me to try? When you go to start and go in to uninstall programs in a Windows 7 Home Premium Toshiba Satellite T115D-S1120 and uninstall old update programs out of the computer with Windows 7 is it removed from the Hard Drive, or is there more that you have to do to remove it from your Hard Drive? I have read that you need to download a Windows 7 update remover tool to remove it from your Hard Drive is this true? Also, by doing this will your computer become faster? View this thread

MSE says that I haven't run a scan in awhile and the icom is red indicating my system is potentially unprotected even though the scheduled scan ran just last night. The same thing happened 2 days ago so I ran a quick scan and the same thing happened. The program is not recognizing scans when they are done. View this thread

I ran Microsoft Fix It because 3 updates failed to install correctly and it also wiped my update history clean. On a previous post I mentioned everything is working, but maybe I may have jumped the gun because now i'm not getting any new updates at all!( with the exception of windows defender) Any ideas? Thanks. View this thread

I have been trying to update my laptop with the above update but consistently get a failure notification. The update downloads and looks as if it is installing but then the error message comes up (code 80073718). I select the option 'get help with this error' which takes me to troubleshooting the updater ( I ran it as administrator). The troubleshooter found an error and repaired it so I tried to update again but yet again got the same error code and the update is still not installed. I have checked my internet connection in case something was interrupted but the connection is fine, I have tried both wifi and Ethernet. I have searched the Microsoft pages but can't find anything about this error. I installed windows 8 as an upgrade to Vista a couple of weeks ago. View this thread

I just updated Security Essentials and noticed that the notification icon at the bottom right corner is missing. Any ideas on how to get it back? View this thread

Microsoft Security Essentials is not updating. This problem began Jan 21. I have tried updating MSSE using the update feature and Windows Update. Windows Update shows no update available. MSSE update feature shows no update for two days and encourages a search for updates which does not happen. View this thread

Hi, I have a problem updating Windows 7 and Office 2010. I'm running the 32 bit version of Windows 7. I only have IE installed as a browser with silverlight enabled and only MS firewall/ default security software installed. I have not installed any 3rd party softwear, firewalls or anti virus. I have tried a number of the solutions previously posted on the site, None of which have worked. Here's what I've done so far: This was a clean install of both Windows 7 and Office 2010. I installed windows 7 first. All updates for Windows 7 installed until I received a message that no more updates were available. I then installed Office 2010, selecting the option to update other Microsoft products on the updater. SP 1 for office was installed and then I received the error message above. I have tried a fresh install again. After installing updates and then selecting update other microsoft products the updater says Most recent check for updates: never Updates were installed: never You receive updates: For Windows and other products from Microsoft Update Again with the error message in the heading. There seems to be a number of posts about this with different suggestions. Here's what I've tried; 1. Windows update troubleshooter says that it repaired problems (update databases error Ox8007005; windows update components repaired) here's a copy of the output report... Proxy :Last Installed Update :Update for Windows 7 (KB2545698),01/21/2013 15:59:52Last Displayed Error :2013-01-21 17:30:38:237 892 778 AU # WARNING: Search callback failed, result = 0x8024402FLanguage settings :en-USbits : Runningwuauserv : RunningWORKGROUP :WORKGROUPWindows Update Agent Version :7.6.7600.256Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP: 1CPU Type : x64 OS Architecture :32-bitRES_GenWUError : Bits is stoppedRES_GenWUError : wuauserv is stoppedRES_GenWUError : CryptSvc is stoppedRES_GENWUError : : CryptSvc RunningRES_GENWUError : : bits RunningRES_GENWUError : : wuauserv Running I haven't posted the windows update notepad output due to its length. 2. Windows update Fix it. I've run this in both default and aggressive modes, and the tool says I have no problems requiring fixing. 3. I ran services.msc and updated the Windows Update file and Background Intelligent Transfer Service to "automatic" and selected start and apply 4. I downloaded a fresh copy of Java direct from the Java website 5. I ran the fixit tool again. Nothing so far has worked. Instinct tells me that the issue lies with Offioce 2010 rather than Windows 7, but I only have the intial install, plus the change in update status when Office is included as an option to base this on. I'd appreciate your guidance and help- p;lease keep information and instructions simple as I'm not a computer techie. many thanks View this thread

As many have already mentioned I turned my computer on today (1/21/13) and have noticed that Security Essentials is not updating. It shows last update was on 1/19/2013. It searches for a second and stops. When will this problem be fixed-I feel like a sitting duck. Thanks View this thread

I am seeking assistance in removing a virus. A couple days ago, I suddenly experienced a blue screen with the message "SRTSPL64.SYS, problem detected." The computer then crashed and rebooted -- and continued to loop in this manner. I launched my Microsoft Security Essentials and it didn't work. I downloaded the Microsoft Safety Scanner, which scanned the system, found 8 viruses, and then ended abruptly just before completing the scan without giving me the option to disinfect. I have downloaded a Kaspersky tool (TDSSKiller) and that did not detect any problems. In trying to access my Windows Security Center, I received a message that the service can't be started. I downloaded the Microsoft Fixit program for the Security Center but it can't start because I can't get access to the internet. My internet icon indicates a signal and "limited access" but can't get online. Essentially, lots of issues here. I hope that someone has an idea about what to do since none of my virus scanners seem to be working -- even in Safe Mode. View this thread

okay, i had this coming... so i hid this useless update but after installing Media Center on my Windows 8 Pro KB976002 either installed with the WMC or after that (in which case my "hide" order got ignored) - either way, this is a messup on MS side, not user side however the bigger problem is that this bloody update cannot be uninstalled by any conventional means - in the windows updates section it does not have an uninstall option, the app does not have an uninstall option, executing wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:976002 gives me the finger saying update cannot be removed because IT IS REQUIRED (please make me laugh more) please tell me how can KB976002 be uninstalled (and no, i do not accept "it can't be" for an answer) - sadly i don't have a system restore date to get rid of this annoying little piece of ... thx, adam dancso View this thread

After being on the HP site for finding answers to my printer problems I noticed that on my bottom bar where the internet connections are, there is a hpsetup icon. When I go there it has a connect tab, this is concerning me. I cant seem to find anywhere to delete it. I have restored my computer and rebooted it but it still is there. Is my computer at risk and what can I do about this. Thanks for answering my others questions also, Lorelie View this thread

I have Win 7 & have had MSE since this PC was new, more than a yr. I noticed the last couple of weeks that the scheduled scan has not been running, now it's not updating & it won't allow me to update manually. If MSE is not protecting my computer, I want to dump it & get something that will. Any suggestions? View this thread
