  1. An elderly member of our PC Users Group has been running OE6 on a WinXP PC and has recently been given a Dell D630 laptop with Win7. His OE storage is extraordinary being some GBs in size with about 100 folders. I used the OE6 Import Export Messages to an Outlook PST file and then, on the Win7 laptop, managed to migrate the messages from the PST store to Thunderbird. However, in about eight folders some of the most recent messages did not appear (they were not in the PST store). In one folder there were 210 messages missing with most of the other seven folders having 2 to 20 messages missing. I went back to OE6 on the WinXP PC and deleted all the messages that had migrated successfully and then deleted the empty folders leaving just the eight folders and the messages that had not migrated to Thunderbird. I also emptied the Deleted items folder. (At this point I foolishly forgot to compact all folders.) I then tried to export all messages again to Outlook. The progress bar went to about half way and froze (we waited for about 20 minutes but no progress). I noted the folder in which this happened. The only way to cancel this task was to use the Shutdown in Task Manager (ending the two tasks did not work). I then opened OE6 and opened the folder in which the export process froze. There I found one message (which was a scan of a line drawing and about a page of text) which was showing as 1+Gb in size; as there was a printout of the message, we deleted that message. At this point, I finally remembered to do a compact all. When I checked the OE6 store location, I noticed that most of the dbx folders were now much smaller but that there were some dbx files for folders we had emptied and deleted and quite a few dbx files for deleted folders showing in blue. (As an aside, could the DBX files in blue be deleted? And could the DBX files for deleted folder still showing in black be deleted? Would this impact on OE running properly? Could I delete the unwanted dbx files and delete the folders.dbx; would this have OE rebuild a folder.dbx with just the wanted folders when OE is opened or would OE just not work?) We tried again to export the messages to Outlook but now the progress bar did not show any movement and we again had to use the Shutdown in Task Manager. I suspect that the first attempt to export messages to Outlook has created a corrupted file (due to the failure of the process to complete and the Shutdown of the PC). Do you know where I might find this corrupted export file so I can delete it or do you know what I can do to export the remaining messages in OE6 to Outlook so I can use the PST file to migrate these remaining messages to Thubnderbird? Any help you can offer to resolve this problem would be much appreciated. View this thread

  3. Hello, I have an old Dell Inspirion E1505 I bought in 2006, which I upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7 Pro last an online purchase that came w/ a product key from designertechsoftware.com in April of 2014. Months later the harddrive went so I replace it w/ a 60GB one and replaced the RAM memory w/ 2 - 1GB cards. I don't have a disc of Windows 7 Pro but I did get it working using the old XP dics it originally came with. Can I use that disc to type in the product key code that I got online for Windows 7? I see there's an upgrade option that comes up when I run the XP disc after it's been installed on my laptop. Thank you in advance for your help in my matter. Not sure if it's been answered already in previous question. View the thread
  4. Hi Community, How can I go about installing Adobe CS4 from a flash drive? I have the installation CD but it cannot work on my laptop because the DVD drive does not work. I thought to transfer the files from the CD to a flash drive but am left wondering how to install it through that method. It does not have a setup folder or file or anything like that. Is there a way I can do this? Thanks in advance. View the thread
  5. I have to ask this question because it is to obvious to me, yet I see no discussion of the topic. I understand that "every day that we run XP we are exposing ourselves to...", yet there is on MS approved vendor that is already offering three (3) months of free support for XP while the decision process is reviewed. While I leave most of the software issues at my main office pretty much up to the IT service that we employ for that purpose. Yes, I understand that there are many things that I can do myself so why pay others, as well as missing out on the learning curve? It is so simple that I will try to just answer it without much explanation. #1. They are under contract, which includes these things, so why should I chance making a mistake, and possibly causing the system to crash, or other disaster if I make a mistake, along the learning curve. All of the Partners, in our firm have agreed that at the principle office none of us is nearly as smart (about computer hardware, & software) as the firm we have retained to do the job, if we were we would (probably almost) never expend money on something that we could do ourselves; #2. We are each well-experienced in our fields, and as partners we support each other when their clients have a question the answer wo which resides within our minds, and not their mind or skillset. We each have an established billing rater per hour, and a case load that already has our individual assistants operating at 99.999% so there is no room for an additional workload (we are all scouring our alma mater to find "assistants to our assistants" or floaters, but as full-time employees as we create appropriate positions as "Associates" as a career path. That all sounds irrelevant until we look at the simple answer to Question #2, everyone here already is fully employed in their jobs, we each earn far more money at our professions, than leaving our desks, and our clients "hanging" while we work on something that know little about, losing a billable hour for every 60 minutes we spend in work outside our field, and only accomplishing only the equivalent of 20 minutes of actual work, so IT IS MORE EFFICIENT FOR PARTNERS TO WORK IN OUR FIELD AND LET IT TECH's WORK IN THEIRS' #3. This is the biggest question we have, Why are so many people, and firms so interested in upgrading to either Win8 (this makes absolutely no sense to me) or to Win8.1, when it appears that it is now

  7. Running Win7Ultimate. I have a NAS with several folders that can be mapped to other machines. They can be mapped and accessed in my Win8.1 computers. I have run the utility provided by the NAS mfr to map the folders to my Win7 machine. I can, in a CMD window, use "net use" and see the mappings set up by the utility, however, they are not visible in Windows Explorer. Interestingly I just tried to access a file in the mapped drives and in the "browse" function in two applications I was able to see the mappings. How to see them in Windows Explorer?? View the thread
  8. I just got a popup saying that Windows was going to update to 8.1. There was a dropdown menu giving me the choice to do the upgrade now, or in 1, 2, 3, or 4 hours. I cannot state this strongly enough - I CANNOT DO THE UPGRADE TO 8.1!!!! I've tried it before and my computer hangs in the middle, then I have to take it to Geeksquad or somewhere to get it working again. THAT CANNOT HAPPEN. This is my work computer, and I cannot lose the ability to use it. I don't want to pay someone to do the upgrade for me, so I want to stay at windows 8.1 until I'm ready to leave my computer somewhere to have the upgrade done. I've previously paid to have it upgraded, then had to refresh windows which turned my computer back to windows 8 and screwed up tons of work I'd done geting my computer set up so I can use it. How can I stop the upgrade from happening before I'm ready? Thanks View the full article

  10. My CD tray keeps opening and closing by itself. Also, i cant open it by button, i need to go to My Compter and eject it. I checked the bios and everythings fine; even updated. I removed the front bezel I scanned for malicious software with MalwareBytes; A lot of files but none related to cd drive I once switched cd drives I shot canned air in the lens Thats all i did, but to no avail. I came to the conclusion that it is a virus, since it does not do that while booting and i can also press the button to open it, same in safe mode. Though no antivirus can find it, and i cant find any winscript/wscript thing in Task Manager. Please help. View the thread
  11. Hi,I have a Dell laptop with Windows XP SP3 pre-installed (On C: Drive). Years later, I installed Windows 7 Pro on the D: Drive and currently have them both. Since a few days, my XP wouldn't start due to an error in the registry leaving me with Windows 7 as the only working windows. I have decided it's time to get rid of Windows XP and replace it with Windows 8.1 and I have already bought the installation CD. However, I have a few concerns: Can I just upgrade Windows XP SP3 to Windows 8.1 instead of a clean installation? (i.e. Can I keep files, settings or any apps?) In case of a clean installation and having to wipe the C Drive, will this affect Windows 7 Pro which is installed on the D Drive? (I once read that some of the Operating System installed on D exist on the operating system installed on the C drive as well). Considering that I cannot log in to the XP [i receive a blue screen], how should I run the installation of Windows 8.1? Should I do it at the start up of BIOS? Or Should I do it from inside Windows 7 Pro (By double click on the .EXE file)? Thank You. With Regards, Yousef View this thread

  14. I just got a new hard drive from Dell to replace the old one, which is acting up and about to fail (according to Dell's diagnostic tool). Dell included a disc called "Windows 8 Recovery Media for Windows 8 Products 64-bit" I'm a non-expert but can certainly replace the hard drive. What exactly should I do (step-by-step, if possible) when I turn on the computer for the very first time with the new hard drive in place. Should the disc already be in the optical drive? Thanks, Alex View the full article
  15. Running Win 7 HP 64-bit on desktop. Quick history: Recently my motherboard died. I'd been using Windows automatic backup and system image backups, saved to an external hard drive. While the computer was in the shop, I tried to restore some files from the backup but the majority of my folders just weren't there. I figured I'd done something wrong or maybe all the drama with the multiple crashes and my attempts to fix (before I realized it was the motherboard) had somehow messed it up. Current: New motherboard, got a new hard drive while I was at it, reinstalled the same Win 7 HP and all other programs. Erased everything off the external hard drive and ran Windows file backup again. It gave me no errors. Then I ran system image backup. It also gave me no errors, but I noticed that the amount of free space on my external hard drive hadn't changed. Folder properties shows the folder WindowsImageBackup = 0 bytes. I tried to restore the backed up files to be sure it had worked this time, but found the same problem as before. When I browse for folders (or for files), it shows C: drive, and then only one folder (Users) shows up. (Last time I think I had two other folders.) Within Users, I have some subfolders but not others. Even for the subfolders that do show up, they are missing subfolders and/or files. I can't see any specific pattern to what's saved and what's not, but I'm missing maybe 80-90% of my data. To be clear, the backup process was totally standard -- nothing customized, no multiple partitions, nothing fancy -- and I received no errors. Windows Backup and Restore thinks all is well. And yet I don't actually have a complete file backup or apparently any system image. Any ideas on what's wrong? Thanks!! View the thread

  17. I have a Windows7 PC and have no connection to the internet using an Ethernet Cable to my Linksys RTP 300 Router. Using the troubleshooter to resolve this I got the message "A network cable is not properly plugged in or may be broken". Using the same cable but connecting direct to my Huawei B260a modem I can get an internet connection or if I use an internet powerline adapter, instead of the Ethernet Cable, between my PC and router I can get an internet connection. Hope someone can make sense of this because my preferred option to connect to the internet is by using the Ethernet Cable and my Router. View the thread
  18. My initial problem was that the User Profile Logon service was not loading my profile. So, I tried to boot in safe mode via F8. However, that brings me to a screen with "No Bootable Devices Found" and a menu for F1 (retry boot) F2 (BIOS) F5 (scan). F1 does not work and F5 said it passed all tests. F2 brings me to the BIOS menu where pressing exit allows me to reboot and at least show the Dell startup screen and access the F12 menu. (Trying F8 again or doing nothing on the Dell startup screen will lead me to the No Bootable Devices screen) From the F12 menu, I selected the first boot option which was the hard drive. From there, it boots Windows and takes me back to the login screen where I get the User Profile error again. It it is not a problem with the system not recognizing the hard drive. I checked in the BIOS menu and all hard drives are enabled. Plus, using F12 and selecting the first option allows for me to at least get to the normal login screen. More important info: I've tried every possible way of mashing F8 (1 second intervals and very rapidly) It never shows the advanced options or the boot menu screen. I have an administrator account and could easily fix the original problem by booting in safe mode and then from there logging in with the administrator account. Also, I could try to modify the user profile altogether, but I don't want to mess with my computer lol. This is a fairly new computer and has been working fine for the past half year, though we have been having problems with the old computer before he got this one. View the thread
  19. Just got a refurbished Windows 7, 64bit ThinkCenter M Series desktop. Not matter what application I run (MS Security Essentials is an exception so far), including Internet Explorer 11, I am getting the error "The application failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect". There is an old thread in the forums to correct the error by installing the package in http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=14632. I downloaded it on another computer and brought to this machine. When I run this package, I get the exact same error so I am stuck. Let me know what I can do. V Bala View the thread

  24. My problem seems to be not unusual, judging by posts here. In the last couple of weeks or so, I am sending mail to one particular correspondent (my son, who is currently working in China). When I check the "sent mail" folder my message is not there, but it turns out the message was actually sent and received. All my other mail is working normally. The problem began when the order in which sent mail is displayed suddenly was reversed, for no apparent reason, and after fiddling I was able to get it back into date order, latest first. How I did this I have no idea; I just fiddled at random. Now I know I'm not supposed to give my email address here, but I'll never find the site again, so anybody wants to offer a suggestion please use jimgarner AT rogers DOT com I guess this should defeat the machine-based address-collecting systems and anybody can figure out the real address.
