i felt that i needed to do a chkdsk /r. i rebooted the computer, a dell inspiron 530, and the chkdsk started. when it got to 15% of stage two, 388227 of 455168 index entries processed, it stopped. i waited fifteen minutes for it, and that is where it stayed. i unplugged the computer, then started it again. the dskchk ran again, and stopped the same place. it did this a total of three times. for several tries, it would run the thing even when i was pressing another key to cancel it. it took four tries to get it canceled. what does the stupid thing think it is doing? I replaced the hard drive on my HP laptop and used the recovery disks to restore my computer to the factory setting. I also uninstalled Norton Anti Virus, downloaded Mozilla Firefox, and downloaded Avast Antivirus. I attempted to update but got two (2) errors - Windows Defender Error 0xc80000222 (The program can't check for definition updates.) and Windows Update Error 800800005 (Windows could not search for new updates.). I even attempted to install Microsoft Fix to perform diagnostics, but it did not install (We're sorry but Windows PowerShell failed to perform). My system panel says that Windows is activated. Ultimately, I want to use my upgrade disk for windows 8. I have used these recovery disks before without any problem. Thanks. View this thread

I can connect to the WiFi, there`s no problem with that. But at some point after a while, the internet just stops. The icon in the task-bar shows that the connection is fine and the signal strength is excellent, but there is no internet. The interesting thing is that most of the times I can fix it if click "Repair". But I need to fix this permanently, it can cause data loss or paying two times for one thing. I never know where I was when this is happening. I tried everything I found in web about that, but the problems they speak of are with connecting, mine is something else. pc is set to automatically create restore points; sometimes it does so DAILY as in april - every single day ! creates 2 varieties Software Distribution Service 3.0 and System Checkpoint none are functional. NONE however when i remember to create restore points THEY are functional and restore as they are supposed to is there an explanation why not functional ? how to "make" them functional ? why does MS "provide" this function if it is of no value - rhetorical question is there a way to set the pc to create a restore point automatically and give it a unique name automatically to distinguish between useless restore points and those that i have commanded it to create ? any help? suggestions? thnx,john View this thread

I ran a virus update on my laptop, picked up several which were either cleaned or quarantined and when the machine restarted i couldnt access the taskbar at the bottom and doesnt connect to my wireless network. Hello everyone, I've already posten my problem on other forums - on the most rescent Elizabeth23 (I think she is also active in here) suggested me to ask my question in here. So I think I will just copy the post i previously created: Since I've built my PC in 2009, I've been messing around with 2 problems related to hibernation and scheduled wake-ups.Maybe at first I have to describe how I use these features.I usually use MyTheatre in the evening to watch TV and turn my pc off into hibernation using its sleep timer function. In the moning then it automatically wakes up, starts mytheatre (to keep my screen turned on, because the screen turning off means the speakers turning off because of my master-slave-powerboard, but also to watch some news), later starts winamp to playback some radio on my second speakers in the bathroom.This perfectly worked for my older nearly similar configured pc but SOMETIMES (every third or 10th time) doesn't work on my "new" one (the one from 2009).And these are the 2 problems occuring:1. Power-Off abortion: Sometimes (very seldom) my pc doesn't power off after it finished the write-ram-to-disk-process (I didn't manage to watch its hibernation process yet, it's just what I guess, I just can see the result). The screen goes off, the blink-on-kbd-hit-led of my wireless beyboard reacts like I got a cpu freeze and the powersupply and its fans keep running (I didn't take a look at the other fans yet, but I think they are still running). In this state, the reset button got no effect, I just can press the power button for 5 seconds to hard-power it off and start it again - usual boot, no wake-up from hibernation.This behaviour is very seldom. I didn't manage to "trigger" it for further analyzation. This means: Using MyTheatre to hibernate now, using start --> shut down --> hibernate, using the command including pwrprof.dll or using psshutdown.exe -h usually doesn't end in this unwanted state. Also the sleeptimer of MyTheatre usually doesn't end like this - just sometimes when I don't watch it... :)2. Schedules task wakes up PC but won't get executed: This porblem occurs very often but randomly on my PC. The scheduled task waking up my PC is set to start MyTheatre. In ~50% it does start, in ~50% it doesn't.This is not SUCH a big problem for my alarm procedure, because I just can set a second task defenitly starting MyTheatre. But it is a problem for every scheduled recording. I would have to set a wake-up-timer approximately 5 minutes before every recording, which is pretty annoying.Yes, I could write a script permanently scanning for scheduled tasks and setting the corresponding wake-up-tasks 5 minutes before. Hello, We are deploying new computers and want them to auto add an account for the Office 365 servers. However, we still have Exchange running, so autodiscovery will still find the old mail server. What can I configure in Exchange or AD to make all new Outlook setups find the Office 365 servers (without taking out our Exchange server) instead of manually entering details for several hundred computers? We're currently deploying Lync 2013 to out fleet using the OCT to customize where the shortcuts are created. What we are finding is that the Skype for Business Patch does not update these icons. It only updates the icons if they are in the default location (no OCT). Is there a standalone Installer for Skype for Business we could apply a TRANSFORM to? Or some other method of updating all icons startmenu, taskbar etc. Thanks View this thread

Can I use the drives in another PC to retrieve the information on the 3 SATA drives or do I need replacement hardware to get at the files ( ie are they proprietary in the way they are stored and split between drives?) I have just installed WHS 32 bit, with a 32bit client desktop and a 64bit client laptop. Everything works fine for the desktop client. For the laptop, I downloaded the connector software from the server (so a connection does exist between them), and the connector installation places a link on the desktop: "Shared Folders on Server" Clicking on the link, I get: \ServerName is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the admin of this server etc.The specified network provider name is invalid. If I look in my network places, the "ServerName" is not present. For the desktop client, in Network, I can see the "Servername", and the "Servername Windows media connect" icons If I try Run> \ServerName, I get: windows cannot access \Servername If try the same command on my desktop, I get a windows security window, and a screen asking me to enter my network password I have looked at countless threads on this, tried changing security permissions, ensured the username and logon are the same etc etc. I have configured backups, and the WHS has no problem seeing the laptop and setting that up. Yet, for some ??? reason, the laptop is not allowing a connection to the server, and I cannot fathom what to do next View this thread

My network is set up, has been working fine for a couple of years and I have 2 computers on the network. A Windows 7 64bit desktop and a windows 7 32bit laptop. In windows explorer on the desktop I can access the shared folders on the laptop. On the laptop I cannot see the desktop computer at all. How do I make the desktop computer visible to the laptop and so I can access the shared folders on the desktop from the laptop? View this thread

The problem: Currently we have the main C drive partitioned as 20GB and we can't repartition it trying with several different partition tools. The error message via one tool is "The volume you have selected may not be extended". Other tools give similar messages. The hard drive is 250GB RAID 1 mirror. What we tried: One suggestion as per https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/841650 doesn't include the Home server edition so not sure to risk it as it clearly states use as own risk. We've tried Acronis partition software, G-Parted, DOS diskpart.exe command and Macrorit http://macrorit.com/partition-magic-manager/server-diskpart-fails-to-extend-system-partition.html Other suspicious info: 1. System properties window says the operating system is "Windows Home Server". 2. System Information window says the operating system is "Windows 2003 Small Business Server". The person who owns this server recalls purchasing Home Server edition. So not sure if this is related or not, but it's conflicting information to find a solution. Bottom line, although this server is outdated and not fully supported any longer, we hope to keep it alive a bit longer if possible if we can just repartition the C drive and increase the free space. Any suggestions other that replace the server are greatly appreciated as they are not prepared to spend the money to replace the entire server. View this thread

Hello please help. I am getting the error code 0x80070490 every time I try to backup to an external HD. I cant go back and do a reset, it's been happening for a very long time. I have tried the resolution that Olaf advised the chkdsk /r. It didn't work. The Microsoft technical folks tell me that it is a missing registry key in HKEY_Local_Machine/SystemCurrentControlSetControlStorageDevicePolicies but I really hesitate to try to look in the registry alone. I just took an old machine I had lying around, beefed it up with some large SATA drives and installed a fresh copy of Windows Home Server (not 2011) on it. It runs beautifully, but when I try to setup my domain for remote access, I enter my hotmail address and password and I get the error above immediately. When I searched the Internet for a solution, there's not much out there to help. I should also tell you that I had another Windows Home Server installation on an old Pentium III, but the machine died a couple of weeks ago. I'm pretty sure I had setup my domain from that old machine but that was a long time ago and I don't remember. Has anyone come across this issue? It's very frustrating. I want to setup powerpoint in a collaborative environment (ie. multiple people can have powerpoint open and working on it at the same time and makin changes) on our own server running server2012.
