  8. can you boot into safe mode,by tapping f8 at startup then chosing safe mode.. if not you will need the xp cd to boot from then you will need to do a repair install... or you will need to obtain that file and manually replace it...not as easy though, due to updates and system changes etc..... you are most likely gonna need the xp cd. regards danzil ps what is the missing file.....system/config/security etc

  11. try repair installing NAV (norton anti virus).or removing it and then re-installing it... may be an idea to remove it,restart then try system restore again....do you use norton go back at all...that can interfere with system restore... symantec have released there only software removal tool that is extremely good get it from...http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039 i have had failed restores due to symantec software being loaded in memory and refusing access to certain files and folders needed for the system restore......mainly the snapshot directory..etc give that a go..run the tool do a restore then re-install NAV. if the restore doesnt work, run the tool, restart pc,then re-install NAV.update then do a scan. regards danzil

  19. this could be numerous things. may be an issue with the line your adsl is on...could be fluctuating.. or internet explorer could be the issue, have you tried reseting the internet explorer settings back to default.... does your internet come from a router or standard adsl modem......you may want to check the logs on the router for anything obvious... you can copy n paste the hijack this log into the correct forum for us to take a look at. regards danzil
  20. check to make sure the hard drive has been pt back in properly and no pins are bent.... what is the make and model of laptop. hard drives are so cheap now a 60 gb 2.5" hard drive is about £40 -£45. then an external caddy £10. so at worst you could put a new hdd in and re-install windows,,,plug your old drive into the caddy to retrieve your data... that is if nothing else on the laptop is damaged... first thing to check is to make sure the bios is finding the hard drive. regards danzil
  21. im not 100% sure what htis could be apart from the monitor being at fault,,,,,or there is an issue with power to the monitor causing the osd to display but i have only seen that once.... do you have a spare monitor to test with to see if anything else unusual happens..... make sure the obvious isnt happening like nothing is nudging the button for the osd,,,make sure the button isnt stuck and clean.... mmmmm will think of some other things to suggest regards danzil
  22. ok here is what i would try. remove the motherboard place on an anti staic surface, connect psu, memory cpu n fan, and graphics card, unless you have one onb board.. power it on then see. if you have on board vga use that first,,,if you have disbled it in the bios, reset the bios,by using the jumper on board,or removing the battery for 10-20 mins, if still the same, then we know it is one of those items of hardware..... when you say it lasts for 15 seconds,,,does it stay on or completely power down....does it blue screen, it is a good sign that it throws out the constant beep without memory, but obviously ram has to be installed for a display to be seen... let me know how you get on with the above. regards danzil
