this will not be the boot.ini file. is the bios detecting the hard drive during post (power on self test).... is the bios set to boot from that hard drive...some bioses will say disk boot failure if there isnt anything on them.... is there a floppy disk in the drive,,,is the floppy cable round the right way...(you will know,if the light stays on then it is incorrect). have you tried loading fail safe defaults in the bios,,,,and checking boot from cd...... try the hard drive in another pc if need be to make sure it is working.... post back after you have tried my suggestions and we can go from there. regards danzil

ok try this... when you get to that menu,remove the usb keyboard from the pc for 10 seconds then plug it back in qiat ten secs then try again.... does the keyboard work at startup can you get into the bios..... you need to allow usb keyboard and mouse in the bios..... does it do the same with a ps/2 mouse n keyboard. try a normal keyboard.or get a usb to ps/2 converter from maplin or pc world no more then a fiver.that should do the trick regards danzil

rubbish. you can access this partition using recovery software......try ontrack.... there are some freeware tools also... recover what you need then format it back to fat32 or ntfs. if i can help anymore please ask. regards danzil

go to my docs.then tools>folder options>view> untick "hide extensions fo rknown file types. then look at the item you downloaded....wgat file format is it....ie..download.RAR after the dot is the important thing,,,then we will know what programme to use... if it is rar or zip download winrar and then just double click the item to decompress it. regards danzil

the lack of sound,sounds like the on board audio header, if it isnt wired in then the sound the back is effected......there is a post on these forums that has a diagram (not great)that i did showig the wiring.check that out,..... have you install the vga drivers,and directx etc. regards danzil

go to start run then type in msconfig. in the startup tab list all that is in there,and post it back. have you updated your graphics card drivers. regards danzil

is your monitor a tft (flat screen) or a crt (tubed monitor). is there any soeaker near the monitor. what graphics card do you have. is the fan spinning sufficent and there is no dust, or cards blocking the fan. does the monitor do it when the screen saver is on,and nothing running in the background. regards danzil

all you will need to do.is get a dvi to dvi lead. plug it into the laptop.then the tv....put the tv on dvi...then usually the keys are fn and f5 i believe (denoted by a monitor in the f keys).this will then show the laptop screen on the tv....you may have to do f5 up to 3 times because there is different features. that should work....dvi i would use over s-video. regards danzil

i agree with jamey. the only other option would be a new hard drive and data recovery.but this may or may not work....you could send the hard drive away for recovery,but it will be expensive. are you under warranty...they will do this for you.(not recover just re-install). search google there are some free recovery tools but most good one's are expensive.....try ontrack.they cost a bit but they also have software that is very good....thats if you want to go down that route... if you have another computer you can try data recovery by pluggin the other drive into it,and scanning away regards danzil

can you boot into xp at all.do you have a full working,up and running copy of windows. if so plug it back in a reformet it.to fat32 or ntfs...... sorry I am unable to access it in windows? duuurgh,didnt read that bit.. when it is plugged in can you see it in disk management. right click my comp>manage>disk management. if so you can format it in there..... if not can you download a win98 boot floppy,you can boot from that and fdisk it and reformat it to fat32,then in xp to ntfs... is there data on it... more info would be great im sure we can sort this out., regards danzil

hi rob how did they re-install do you know.... they may have done a factory restore,this usually reloads all the bloated settings. run msconfig and remove what you dont need loaded from the start up tab...this will not remove the programme just, stop them from loading there settings at startup). defrag etc may help give them a go regards danzil

hi lee just go into your bios, then choos load fail safe defaults...that will put the clock speed to normal. what cpu do you have,,,,,and what does the bios say about votage,clock speed. regards danzil

hi there is your sound card on board.or is it another card. when moving this may have come dislodged....that maybe why it is constantly finding new hardware...... when you say there sometimes isnt anything on screen,and sometimes no bios beeps..this could be mutliple issues. firstly i would change the power supply........ then, i would check your ram......(usually if this is faulty the board will beep at you though). well first thing first try another power supply......install the driver for your sound card too....if you dont know how post back,,,,,with the model of sound card,and i will post a link to the download. regards danzil

the add on pad (like a docking bay) are pretty good....the cheaper ones use loud fans though and can be a little annoying... but yes they do work i have tested them myself... regards danzil

Hi what software where you using, other then nt backup.... you wll need a decent cloning programming like casper xp...... once cloned you will need to boot from the usb hard drive....this i will be a setting in your bios.. then all should boot fine.....have you checked that the usb drive is all ok,,,1 small bad cluster can cause several issues... casper xp http://www.fssdev.com/products/casperxp/ redards danzil

hi lee. when you replaced all these components did you do a fresh install of windows... if you didnt then most of these issue may be because of this...registry entries will be wrong...software will be using different functions that may be wrong...... the shutting off, sounds like the cpu is over heating........can you resit the heatsink and fan......is the thermal grease under the heatsink ok...... if none of the above then try defragging the hard drive..and run anti virus scans... if not try a repair install of xp....a fresh install would be best though... regards danzil

that is indeed fake...this variant add registrys entries tio allow mailware etc to neter your machine... go to http://www.trendmicro.com and do a full scan....... then download ewido update that and do a full system scan....... if this icon is still there after this run this scan http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm you should be ok after this if not post back.i have some more suggestions. regards danzil

what is the make of your graphics card... run through the wizard and allow it to connect to microsoft (internet connection must be active),you may be lucky and get it that way. if not i will need the make of the graphics card, or laptop (if it is one). and i will post you a link to the driver download. regards danzil
