Just to add to what Rustys has said.... How are you trying to update the bios? For updating the BIOS, you should go to "support.dell.com" and enter the appropriate service tag number. Then you will see the entire list of possible BIOS updates, drivers, etc. Select the BIOS update that you desire (A22) and from there the website will guide you. Very straight forward process, just follow instructions on the website. I see that the Dell 755 PCs originally came with 2Gb Ram.... have you upgraded the Ram..... 2Gb will struggle with Win10 ( especially 64bit) 4Gb Ram should be your minimum ( 8 Gb is ideal ) -

Emails claiming to be from the Student Loan Company are trying to steal personal data and banking information from new and returning students https://i.imgur.com/qJQKhVn.jpg Students heading to university this month have been warned to watch out for a phishing email scam which looks to steal their personal information for the purposes of identity theft and fraud. The UK's fraud and cyber crime centre Action Fraud and The City of London police have urged universities to raise awareness about the scam to both new and returning students ahead of the new academic year. Criminals looking to take advantage of a busy time for students are sending phishing emails purporting to be from the Student Loans Company, the government-owned body which provides student loans. Addressed to 'Student', the email claims that most student loan accounts have been suspended due to inaccurate information and targets are urged to click on a provided link in order to update their information. Of course, the link doesn't lead to a legitimate website, but a fake version of the Student Loans Company website with the aim of stealing credentials - including email address, password and secret answer as well as bank account details. All of this is information which can easily be exploited to carry out fraud, additional hacking related crimes or sold on underground forums. The scam has been active for at least two weeks and is targeting both new and current university students. It's also been spotted targeting people who never applied for student finance. Like many phishing scams, this one attempts to panic the victim into giving up their personal data. In this instance, it's attempting to use the fear of not receiving the funds students require to pay for university in an effort to scare them into clicking the fake link and delivering their information into the hands of criminals. https://i.imgur.com/XMpoe21.png However, taking a few seconds to examine the email quickly demonstrates that it's a fake - for a start, it's full of poor spelling and grammar, even in the opening line. "Due to incomplete student information update provided to the Student Loans Company (SLC). Most Accounts have been suspended due to inaccuracy, and we strictly advice every student to update their information". The sentence is written in broken English, with erroneous use of capital letters - and 'advice' is incorrectly used instead of 'advise'. "This phishing email displays a number of tell-tale signs of a scam including spelling and grammar errors. As the new university year begins, we are urging people to be especially cautious of emails that request personal details. Always contact your bank if you believe you have fallen victim to a scam," said Detective Chief Inspector Andy Fyfe of the City of London Police. The Student Loans company has also reminded students that it will never ask for student's personal or banking emails over email and that anyone who sees the scam should report it. "Anyone who receives a scam email about student finance should send it to us at phishing@slc.co.uk in addition to reporting it to Action Fraud, as this allows us to close the site down and stop students from being caught out," said Paul Mason, Executive Director of Repayments and Counter Fraud at the Student Loans Company. "We want to remind students to stay vigilant with the details they provide online and to be mindful of the personal information about themselves they post online and on social media too," he added. [Solved] Windows task bar looks like Windows 98

Hi RK, A lot of Win7 users had a problem where the system seemed stuck in the 'Classic theme'. This could well be the same problem. Date is immaterial really. Win7 came out in 2009 ..... so most problems on the 'net' will probably be dated between then and 2012 ( when Win8 came out ) Take a look at this and see if it helps. How do I boot a HP Pavilion x360 from USB?
Starbuck replied to RustyKnight's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi RK, That's an external drive, isn't it? If so, I'm not really surprised that it didn't work. iUSB: I knew that I recognised that make and model of laptop..... it's the same as my daughters. Always a problem when a cd/dvd drive isn't available. You really need to concentrate on using a USB stick. This way you could run Linux from the usb stick and save anything directly back to the usb stick. You can run Linux from a DVD, but it's very slow. I'd make sure that the bootable USB has been created correctly. Also.... are you connecting the USB stick to a USB2 port, not a USB3 port? How do I boot a HP Pavilion x360 from USB?
Starbuck replied to RustyKnight's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
I take that you have enabled booting from USB within the bios and made it the first option? (meaning it will try booting from the USB before the Hard Drive) Also, is the USB a bootable USB? I have never installed Linux before. This link may help: Remove win 8, install Ubuntu 16.04 64 bit on a laptop with UEFI -

Hi Jim, The fix seems to have run fine second time around. If you no longer have the Driver Reviver or MB issue you can remove FRST now. Right click on the FRST icon and select delete. Right click on any fixlog.txt or fixlist.txt files and select delete. Navigate to: C:\frst and delete the frst folder. I'll leave you in Kens capable hands. -

Hi Jim, I've no idea what happened there, but it definitely wasn't good. Let's try that fix a different way. Please download the attached fixlist.txt file (bottom of this post) and save it to the Desktop. NOTE. It's important that both files, FRST and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work. NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system Re-run FRST/FRST64 (which ever is installed ) and press the Fix button just once and wait. http://i.imgur.com/HbL7sAI.png The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post this in your next reply. Thanks fixlist.txt -

Hi Jim, As Ken has already pointed out.... neither are ransomware. MalwareBytes is legit and Driver Reviver is usually classed as 'Potentially Unwanted Program' (although it can be installed legitimately) Step 1 First thing to do is.... Start >> Control Panel >> Under the Programs category, click Uninstall a Program. Look for: MalwareBytes, right click on this and select remove. now do the same for: Driver Reviver. Now reboot the system. Step 2 Download mbam clean and save to your Desktop. Please close all open applications to avoid any conflicts when running the tool. Locate the file mbam-clean.exe and double-click to run it... Vista/Windows 7/8/10 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.. and follow the onscreen prompts. It will ask to restart your computer, please allow it to do so (very important) Step 3 Let's look for any leftovers.... There are both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Farbar Recovery Scan Tool available. Please pick the version that matches your operating system's bit type. If you are unsure what you're system bit type is..... click Here for help. For x32 bit systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop. For x64 bit systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64 and save it to your Desktop. Double-click the downloaded icon to run the tool. Vista/Windows 7/8/10 users right-click and select Run As Administrator http://i.imgur.com/3QFkuOs.png When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer. http://i.imgur.com/uCpSYXB.png Press Scan button. http://i.imgur.com/cFTps3z.png It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please copy and paste this to your reply. The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). Please copy and paste this to your reply also. When FRST is run it will make a backup of your registry before compiling the 2 reports Let me have the 2 FRST reports and we'll take it from there. -
In a bid to 'secure the whole world', the Russian security firm is offering up free anti-virus protection globally. http://i.imgur.com/EmynhqA.jpg Kaspersky Lab has announced that it will be offering free anti-virus protection for everyone by rolling out the base version of its software globally at no charge. In a blog post authored by the security firm's chief, Eugene Kaspersky explains that an increase in the number of installations of Kaspersky Free is expected to positively affect the quality of protection of all users, since the "big-data-bases will have more numbers to work with to better hone the machine learning". The free version contains the bare essentials, Kaspersky said, which includes file, email, and web antivirus; automatic updates, self-defence; quarantine; and a handful of additional features the blog post does not list. "This ****nal ensures convenient and safe web surfing ... working with USB sticks and other portable storage media, and protection against both phishing and infected files being run," he wrote. "In short, the indispensable basics that no one on the planet should do without." The free antivirus won't be competing with the security vendor's paid-for versions, Kaspersky said, which cover additional features such as parental control, online payment protection, and secure VPN connection. "Though it features just the bare basics, it still packs a punch -- a punch we're no less proud of," the blog post continues. Russia, Ukraine, Belorussia, China, Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark already have the free software available after participating in the company's pilot program. The "first APAC wave" -- including Australia and New Zealand -- the US, Canada, the Caribbean, and Kazakhstan are due for rollout this week; Africa, the Middle East, and Turkey can access the free software as of early September; followed shortly by Brazil, LatAm, India, and Hong Kong. The free-ware will be available come October in the United Kingdom, Ireland, DACH, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Israel, Maghreb, Benelux, Eastern Europe, Japan, and South Korea; while Vietnam and Thailand will need to wait until November. According to Kaspersky, giving the software away in the piloted regions "cranked up" the company's market share "considerably". "Not that increasing market share is our aim; our aim is to raise the overall level of protection on the internet," the chief explained. Earlier this month, the Trump administration removed Kaspersky Lab from two lists of approved vendors used by government agencies to purchase technology equipment, Reuters reported, amid concerns the Russian-based company's products could be used by the Kremlin to gain entry into United States networks. According to the report, Kaspersky products have been removed from the US General Services Administration's (GSA) list of vendors for contracts that cover information technology services and digital photographic equipment. Government agencies will still be able to use Kaspersky products purchased separate from the GSA contract process, the report states. The removal follows the accusations from US intelligence agencies that Russia hacked into Democratic Party emails, thus helping Donald Trump to election victory, despite President Vladimir Putin proclaiming his country has never engaged in hacking activities, but some "patriotic" individuals may have. Hi Ray, Removing it from the Download folder shouldn't have any effect on your Document folder. The Download folder is only a storage area for the program before it's installed. If you delete if from the Download folder it'll be moved to the recycle bin ..... you can always move it back if necessary.
-
Hi Ray, Anything in Download folder is safe to delete. How I do this, is to highlight the first entry and hold the shift key down... now click on the last item. They should all be highlighted now. (release the shift key once they are all highlighted) Now right click on them and select delete. This should delete all of the select items at the same time.
