1. Hi, hoping someone can help me as the web currently isn't, basically I'm very happy with windows firewall and from what I've read on here there is little benefit in changing it. Also realise that its best to also block outgoing connections. So after a while fiddling around I did just that, and found that nothing works which was to be expected I guess, but I have a few questions so hopefully you'll be able to help. At the minute I've set-up an exception which says this and ticked the allow box here But I don't really know what it all means, things are able to connect again, firefox etc but I don't know if it's set-up as securely as it should be. I'm unsure what the first selection means but adding each program that need an internet connection individually would take a long time and I presume that option uses the rules already set for inbound connections?? The second bit, my initial thoughts were to tick the one about it needing to be secure, but nothing was able to connect when it was set-up like this. So if anyone can explain I would be very grateful.
2. Hi, I'm wondering if anyone can help me. Word 2007 automatically adds a line space between paragraphs which I'm sure is useful in some cases but since my main use for Word is to type up uni notes its a real pain. I am able to disable it for the document I'm working on but was hoping that there was away to change the default of this function to be off. I've had a look in the settings but can't seem to find a solution. Thanks.
3. Thanks everyone, I'm still swithering. If you looked at my bank account you'd understand why. I certainly can't consider a mac book. The way i figure I've got three options. 1) I get a very cheap one with a linux operating system and tiny hard drive 2)I get a more expensive one with windows operating system 3)I don't get one at all. The thing is in reality for the most ease I'd prefer it to have windows, and bigger hard drive etc would make it a lot more usable. But at the same time only the HP 2133 really appeals since it has vista, wrong or not I now see XP as taking a step backward and much prefer Vista. But this it's self raises problems as there seems to be some doubt if the netbook can actually handle vista and it almost certainly needs an extra GB of ram which again adds cost. I think I'll probably end up not getting one as I have a feeling my main laptop will need replaced in the near future which again is more cost.
4. Looking at this post http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/windows-vista/4522-cant-open-org-uk-websites.html It looks like there is a good chance that an antivirus or firewall is to blame.
5. Hi, I have a cheap USB stick and I do mean cheap, lol so this may not be any help. But I presume you've downloaded the driver from here? Freecom Technologies is the specialist in multimedia connections and storage solutions for PC, Apple Macintosh and Home entertainment. Also If that works what software are you using TV, in my limited experience there isn't really anything as good as the windows media centre for TV viewing. Mine came with blaze software which to put it politely was useless.
6. no opinions? Really need some help here. Even if your opinion is that they are a waste of time, which I'm guessing from the lack of replies you maybe think they are. That'd be a help because its a lot of money for me right now and I'm prepared to spend it as I can see it being a big help but if its not worth it then I'd be grateful of that advice.
7. Thanks, for what I do though I really need something that I can put in a backpack, I'm sure wheels are fine for short distances, but I'm over a mile from my main lecture theatre and walk there and back about twice a day. The library is the same in the opposite direction. Also looking at this one. HP 2133 Laptop - Laptops at Ebuyer Though I have no knowledge of vista business really and am a bit wary about using 1gb of ram with vista.
8. Hi, looking for a bit of help. Really want something lightweight to use at uni, for lectures and taking to the library etc. And I find my full sized laptop too much to carry around( not to mention the fact its falling to bits). Was hoping to get one for Christmas but apparently what Santa thought I really needed was a new rain coat;). Not that I'm complaining it is an expensive raincoat and will be used. Problem is that I have no money and feel I really need a netbook, lol. Anyway looking for any advice or opinions. Been looking at this one. I think its probably the sort of thing I want. I think that it needs to have a windows operating system as I will want to install office 2007 but doubt that I'll be able to afford anything with vista. I also would like a decent sized hard drive. Buy ACER AOA150-BB | 8.9" netbook - Specification | Comet But to be honest I have no idea what I want, the only thing I am sure about is that its not to be an advent, pc world have a lot of advent netbooks in the sales, but the laptop I have just now had major repairs done before it was even a year old and its an advent. Not going there again. The fact its still running is a mirical.
9. Hi, sorry this is going to sound stupid but I really don't know what sounds don't work. Emm I just know the computer is a lot more noisy when using the built in speakers, lol. The welcome sounds definitely don't work but I presumed that was because it hadn't loaded the drivers at that point??? But also emptying the recycle bin, the noise when a usb device is added or removed, the noise when windows mail comes through. Sorry thats all I could come up with, although I'd say its all the windows sounds, but right now its hard to say for certain. I really don't know if they worked or not, I'll try reinstalling anyway and let you know how it goes. Thanks

11. Hi, its just a cheap one, basically to tidy up my cables and have everything possible connected to the laptop through the one usb hub. ----A-CM106[uSB Sound Card]

13. Oh OK,lol. Yeah I have a set plugged into the external sound card, the thing is none of the windows will come through the external sound card. Sorry if I didn't make that clear.

15. OK, so this may not be the answer you wanted, but because I don't have a clue what active speakers are.

17. Hi, you might remember I got an external sound card for my laptop a while back and use it the majority of the time as the sound quality is slightly better and it means I don't have cables coming out the front of the laptop. Now the external sound card works fine with the laptops built in one, when its not plugged in the built in speakers work etc. However, its dawned on me that some how the windows sounds don't work when using the external card, only the laptops built in one, but I can't find anything that lets you control the sounds the two sound cards play. So not really sure what I've done but is there a way of correcting it, thanks.

19. You'll get different opinions on the ram side of things, but 1gb is probably fine. Saying that I did upgrade mine from 1Gb to 2Gb and it made a small difference, the system continually uses just over the 1GB now that its available. The other thing I'd personally watch out for is the cheaper laptops that have Home basic installed, I'd say you really want the premium version.
20. If i click on gallery on ebuyer then the pictures all work for me. They come up in a separate window though so you might want to make sure a pop-up blocker isn't blocking them etc. Out of interest Wolfy what do you think of that laptop, its not that I'm talking myself into it or anything. And I know your a HP man ( and I don't mean sauce wise) although I'd be happier if they didn't come with such a sheer amount of junk preinstalled.
21. No its nothing like Ebay just a site selling computers and parts online. In my experience they can't be beaten easily on price and they are easy to deal with. Delivery is quick and if there is any problems with the items delivered they organise it to be collected etc. I'm sure there will be other more experienced member along to give you advice and opinions soon though.
22. I'm no expert but I'd definitely have a look on Ebuyer, I have my eye on this particular one right now, but it unlikley I will find the cash. HP 6735s Laptop, AMD AthlonTM X2 Dual Core QL-60 1.9GHz, 4GB memory, 250GB HDD, DVD+-RW SMDL LightScribe writer, Webcam 15.4" WXGA (1280 x 800) WLAN Bluetooth Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium - Ebuyer I don't know if its within your price range but with limited knowledge I'd say it was a good deal
23. Thanks, it hasn't reappeared yet and the laptop has been restarted several times. So looking good. Has left me wondering how linked Media Center is to Media Player, because the fact that Windows Media Center starts at startup is the only reason that I can see it was reappearing at start-up. I always stupidly viewed them as two completely seperate applications but obviously that is wrong. Anyway many thanks glad to find out what was happening.
24. I think it may be solved, I really hope so. But a quick googl search revealed a possible solution. Music2/Christmas Music was for some reason set as the default rip folder for Media player, and I presume media center is linked. Anyway it isn't reappearing anymore when either is opened so I'll see what happens on reboot.
25. I think we may be getting there, lol. Both Windows media center and media player are causing it, whenever i open them it reappears. lol how I solve this I don't know.
