  1. Windows has a certain percentage that 'it sees' as too much probably 60-70% and again if you defragged the drive depending on what it is used for you may get a benefit but it will be hard to tell the difference in speed of the program unless its as previously stated a large file that is accessed frequently. They are normally really fragged because people install and remove programs all the time, and it does have a toll on the HDD as there are files everywhere.
  2. lol I take it that seems like a feature that would 'benefit' you Seth
  3. Hi, yes you can just swap the processor out for a new one but make sure that your Motherboard and the Motherboards BIOS supports the new chip.
  4. Hi, and welcome to FPCH :)
  5. No problem - anything else you need help with just ask. :)
  6. Rob, it may always look like that - if you tried to run another defrag program (NOT RECOMMENDED) and I bet they show a different result.
  7. OCZ added on to their PSU profile this week, with the introduction of several new ModXStream Pro power supplies. The PSUs are aimed at enthusiasts, like most OCZ hardware, being sold as units built for reliability and stability. The units are available in configurations from 400W to 700W, and all of which carry at least an 82% power efficiency rating, even at full load. Sourced from TechSpot - PC Technology News and Analysis
  8. Private browsing is a feature that the Mozilla team ended up pulling from Firefox 3, but one that might show up in the next iteration of Internet Explorer. According to reports, two Microsoft trademark filings – Cleartracks and Inprivate – seem to be an indication of this, with them covering methods to delete or disable history and file caching on the browser. One obvious use for the feature, which is currently present only in Apple's Safari browser, will be surfing the web for porn or illicit activities without leaving traces. But privacy advocates will certainly find other worthy uses for it, such as to keep prying eyes from viewing sensitive information stored in form fields. 9. There is a new type of malicious advertising doing the rounds, one that targets users of Windows, Mac, and Linux systems running IE, Firefox, and Safari. The attack, which was made public via a number of discussion boards, exploits a feature in Flash to put a plain-text string of characters on a user’s clipboard. While the feature alone appears to pose no security risk at all, hackers are using it in tandem with Flash-based banner ads on legitimate sites to persistently overwrite the clipboard with a malicious URL – effectively hi-jacking the clipboard until the browser window is closed. This of course can lead some people to unknowingly spam the link, which points to a fake anti-virus product for sale Sourced from TechSpot - PC Technology News and Analysis
  10. At a loss on this one I am afraid :( can you try removing all the cables in the board again - run your fingers over the connectors and plug them back in - it must be a static issue - all I can think of.
  11. I have mentioned that defrags STRESS the HDD - IMHO the ones that continually defrag are the worst kind (they continually shuffle your files around and it cannot place them near each other which is the purpose of a defrag utility) - you will end up in a right mess if you use big files regularly. I cannot stress enough the amount of physical and file damage these programs cause when used regularly. It is my honest opinion that people leave defrag programs well alone unless you have a system that has lots of large files. If we use Mara's post as an example of what they can do, proceed at your own risk.
  12. Shrimply that was probably wrote 2 years + ago and someone has just added the Vista part in - stick with what we say - we do this day in day out!
  13. Burning CD/DVD will max most CPU's - it is not recommended to use other programs when burning.
  14. I am stumped on this one - there are not many things that can go wrong with audio hardware or software wise. Is the audio set to 2.1 in the windows audio? control panel>sounds and audio device>advanced.
  15. Doug they all leave red lines, some files just cannot be completely defragged -
  16. Glad its sorted - and as always thanks for letting us know :) This thread appears to be solved and is now closed If you are the original poster of this thread and need it re-opened, then please PM (Private Message) an Administrator or Moderator
  17. Have you adjusted the Realtek audio options aswell as the windows audio one?
  18. That audio driver is very old - are there no newer ones according to that it's 2006?
  19. I have had my say on this subject and will allow others to answer first
  20. I think this is an excellent idea - we should also post which ones to avoid - paid and free and reasons to why.
  21. Rob, Can you post a DX log please - open a command window - and type in dxdiag and post the screenshot please.
  22. Shrimply are you using Zone Alarm as there have been a few 'issues' recently with that.
  23. Just make sure that the PSU (power supply) has ALL the connectors that the MOBO (Motherboard) needs - some MOBO's require 20PIN ATX and some 24PIN ATX (most PSU's come with a 24pin and you can detach the 4pin) but if you get one that only has a 20 pin - you cannot add another 4 if that makes sense. Also the size of the HDD depends on what she will be using the PC for - if its just internet and word and excel then 80GB is more than enough - if she will be doing the above as well as playing games etc then as Maynard suggested 120GB+ would be better.
  24. Right first things first - have you been told by windows updates that you need an INTEL CHIPSET DRIVER? The only thing that will cause your CPU to 'throttle' when it shouldn't is the lack of the intel chipset driver. THIS is VERY common on ASUS boards. Also is ALL the RAM the same speed? PS - welcome to FPCH
