  1. Hi and welcome to ExTS :) Start > type in .....devmgmt.msc ...... ENTER Click the > next to Display Adapters Right click on the device ( Radeon 6310 ? ) > Update Drivers Let Windows do this automatically.
  2. Just wanted to confirm that this is a 64 bit processor. Did you try the RAM one at a time ?
  3. Let me know what the CPU details say please :) On the problem machine.
  4. This is more than enough. Install Speccy please http://www.piriform.com/speccy (free version) What does it say regarding the CPU ?
  5. Grent and grees have both been banned. They are working together to promote a specific forum and software. Links removed. Nice try :)
  6. Hi Ray you never got around to answering this... I am particularly interested in the partition sizes. Win 7 64 bit needs at least 20GB and if you are adding programs you need more. So 40GB min say - with at least 15% free space. [ that is 6 GB free on a 40 GB partition ]
  7. Hi Ray I can only compare with the laptop I did recently using the Digital River ISO. The re-install went fine and the only problem was internet access and this was resolved using a driver from the web-site. When you say there are drivers missing ............ have you checked in Device Manager to see if there are yellow exclamation marks which indicated driver problems ? It should be better as the "out of the box" machine comes with additional bloatware as it is called. I would be reluctant to pay this. There is absolutely no guarantee. When you say "takes time to do anything" I assume that opening programs etc is noticeably slow? Slower than when you had the machine running before the problem ? Take the RAM out. Put just one module back. Run the machine. If no better - swap the modules over and run on the other one. Is there any difference using just one RAM module ? How much RAM do you have ?
  8. Hi and wecome to ExTS :) I have had this problem before. Router dropping the connection for no apparent reason. Switch it off - re-boot. Connection re-established only to drop out again. The solution was to replace the router. At 5 years old I suspect that you may well have to do the same thing. ( they don't last forever ) I did fix my sister's by changing the channel from within the router's software. What you describe could be down to radio interference. Try changing the channel to either 1 / 6 / 11 (there is a reason for these specific channels ....... just select one that is furthest away from the channel you are currently set to ) If you need advice on how to do this just post back with the model number of your Zxyel router.
  9. Hi John Nev is correct with his advice. The "OEM" is exactly the same Operating System but is supplied to system builders like Dell; Acer; HP etc. They get it cheap and you are limited to having that specific OS on that specific machine. It is not transferable. You can, however, use the disk labelled "Windows Vista Home Premium". This is limited to one installation at a time - but not on any specific machine. In other words - you completely own it to install on whichever machine you wish .......... as long as it is only on one machine at a time. You couldn't install it using the Product Code on two different machines. If you use this disk to re-install then you MUST use the OEM Product Code from the problem machine.
  10. Hi Ray Just a thought ..... The OS you installed ....it is Service Pack 1 ? Start > right click "Computer" > Properties
  11. It keeps pointing back to the wireless adapter in your machine. Try a USB wireless adapter click here You can get these almost anywhere. It doesn't need to be an expensive one - but some have an external aerial and in your situation this type may be better. I can't guarantee that this will solve your problem but if other laptops are OK and new drivers and a repair indicate wireless adapter problems - it is the next logical step.
  12. Hi John That line seems to indicate that the system was looking for something but couldn't find it - so skipped on to the next. SFC does not fix all problems - it depends what it finds. You said this earlier.... If this version of Vista is exactly the same as your own ( Vista Home Premium for example ) you should be able to buy a new hard drive and use this to install the Operating System. You would need to make sure that you used the product code off the sticker from your machine.
  13. Hi Ray Almost there :) This doesn't sound right. Start > type in ....diskmgmt.msc .....hit ENTER You should see details of the disk here. What does it say regarding Disk 0 ? Re internet connection .... Take a look here for the drivers click here
  14. Hi and welcome to ExTS You say you downloaded Win8. What was on the system previously ? Try running the upgrade assistant to see if your system is compatible click here Download Speccy from here click here [you want the free version] Install and run Does it list your sound device under "Audio" ? If so - what is it?
  15. Hi and welcome to ExTS :) Sorry for the slow response - I have been away for a few days. It sounds like you have 2 problems. Let's deal with them one at a time. Internet Problem If your "other half" is having no problems with connecting we must assume that the problem lies with your machine. It is no help at all - but my Win8 machine locks up with no Internet access at times - but not enough to be a problem. Point the mouse to the top right corner > select Search Type in Device Manager .......then click on "Settings" Click the > next to "Network Adapters" 1. What is listed ? 2. Right click on the Wireless device > Update drivers 3. Are there any yellow exclamation marks ?
  16. I wrote a short tutorial re Windows 8 a while ago. If you want to take a look ...... click here
  17. Your Video Card will be under-powered if you go for 430 Watt PSU [From system - click here ] I would suggest 600Watt or better. The Video Card will also need a 6pin PCIe Power Connector for its own power supply. Motherboard specs here click here I would be inclined to opt for an i5 CPU if your finances stretch that far.
  18. Please do not post the same thing 4 times. If you post once we will find it. I have deleted the other 3 posts.
  19. Which Anti-Virus do you have ? As a test only ........turn the AV off and see if you get the same result. Don't forget to enable the AV again :)
  20. They should all install - assuming there are no problems. I would go with Win 7 from choice.
  21. Hi I am still a bit confused but let's see if I have this correct .... OK - If you can connect each of 3 drives to the motherboard I am assuming that they are SATA drives .......... ?? If this is the case - connect the two drives to the motherboard that have XP on them. ( leave the third drive disconnected ) Go into the BIOS and and check the Boot Order It is OK if the DVD Drive is first in the boot order. The Drive that you want to boot from normally should be the first drive in the Boot Order. The second choice hard drive should be next. Both drives should be seen in the BIOS. If this is all ok ............. =================== Boot up from the first drive. Now right click on My Computer > Properties Click on the Advanced Tab then under Startup and Recovery click on Settings. Then ...under System Startup click on Edit. You can now edit the Boot.ini file. I suggest that you copy this - just in case :) ( Be careful here you don't want to alter anything other than what I have suggested ). Your Boot.ini file will look a bit like this: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect [ what is in inverted commas may be different ] You need to add this line to the bottom of your existing Boot.ini file. multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP - CNC" /fastdetect Your Boot.ini should now look like this: [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP - CNC" /fastdetect The only thing you can change is inside the inverted commas "Microsoft Windows XP Professional" you could change this to "XP-Pro" if you wish. ================ timeout=30 may be different. This gives you 30 seconds to make your decision before the system boots from the first option automatically. You can change this if you want. ================= This should now give you the option each time you boot up to select which version of XP you want to boot from.
  22. The log should be found .... C: > Windows > Logs > CBS
  23. I don't think the DVD Drive is working properly. With the DVD Drive set as the first boot device the system will look there for an operating system to boot from. It would not respond to Ubuntu / XP Pro / new Win 7 ISO If it doesn't see an OS to boot from it then moves to the next in the Boot Order. If there are no Boot Manager files on the hard drive - it cannot boot up. Hence the message. I was going to suggest trying a CD instead of a DVD ........... but UBuntu and XP will be a CD. ( There are 2 independent lasers in the DVD drive ) Check the cables connected to the DVD Drive at the drive itself and at the motherboard end. It would be handy if you could take the drive out and connect it to another system to see if disks are recognised.
  24. Hi and welcome to ExTS Am I correct in assuming that you have 2 separate drives and both have a copy of XP on. ? They both cannot be "C:" drive if they are connected at the same time. If you connect both drives at the same time it should be possible to dual boot them - selecting which drive to boot from at the start of each boot process. This will involve adding a line to the Boot.ini file. Do you have the option of connecting both drives at the same time ?
