1. That is what I was going to ask :) It looks very much as if your NIC card has died. ( the card you connect the ethernet cable to ) You can take it out and try it in another PCI slot if you have one spare. Or you could put it in another pc to test or borrow a card to try. There are a couple of other things we can try... Download Winsock Fix to a memory stick click here Run it on the problem PC.
2. Is this it?
3. Get a permanent marker and write it on the side of the case. You could also tape a piece of paper with the Product Code on it inside the case.
4. Let me have the make and model number of the router please. There is usually an indication that there is a LAN connection when you plug in the ethernet cable.
5. When you connect the cable from the pc to the router does the Connection LED light up? If it does ..... Does it go out if you disconnect from the pc but leave it connected at the router ?
6. Hi, Absolutely no connection at all. This is significant. The first hop should have been to the router Start > Run ....type in ......devmgmt.msc .....Enter Click the + next to Network Adapters It should show Realtek RTL8139/810x Are there any yellow exclamation marks or red Xs ?
7. Hi With the ethernet cable connected to the router.... Click on the orange "Network Test" from my signature ( bottom of post ) Copy the results and post them here please.
8. Hi and welcome to ExTS This doesn't look like a complete ipconfig /all How did you run it ? From a command prompt? No Wireless - so you are connecting directly to the router with an eternet cable ? Try one of the laptops and use the ethernet cable. (turn the wireless off - there may be a switch to do this on the front / side or top of the laptop ) Can you connect this way ?
9. You could check it out here to see if fibre optics is available in your area click here
10. I am reluctant to suggest this ....... but it could be that a BIOS upgrade is needed. The only thing is ....if it goes wrong you will not be able to boot up at all. If the system runs fine until you shut down again then it could well be a BIOS problem. The other option is to leave the machine on and let it go into Sleep Mode when not in use. (I do this with my laptop)
11. I asked it again - and explained why ! You need to add a line to the BOOT.INI of the old drive if this is first in the boot order. But you seem to know more than I do - so I will leave it in your capable hands.
12. You can set up the router manually. The instructions should be with the literature sent to you. Which router do you have ?
13. As long as the capacitors are not higher than the plastic housing for the card ( and on looking again they seem OK ) then and PCIe x 16 card will fit.
14. Basically what Vr5fx is saying is that the card should fit :)
15. At last !! Somebody who knows what he is talking about :)
16. I have put a note on the Obfuscation II log page for you :)
17. Hi XP must be a bit different from Vista. Try C: > Documents and Settings > All Users > Application Data > Microsoft > Windows Live > Contacts As I said - I don't have Messenger on any of my systems so cannot check this for you.
18. Hi Geoff I had bit.ly/183j59 ages ago but it didn't make any sense - even Googling it. I now have the co-ords but probably will never be able to sign the log - living on the Wirral as I do. Glad that you solved the riddle at long last :)
19. Hi Geoff Good to meet another cacher ( Ken-B [from Wirral] ) ......very original caching name :) I have come to the conclusion that it is Perl too. I sent a text to a friend of mine who knows a few computer languages - but he is as confused as us. I will try again :) You can d/l Perl from here and have a go at copying the code in so that you can have a go at printing it http://strawberryperl.com/ There is a Perl forum here: http://forums.devshed.com/perl-programming-6/ You could register and ask there. I would be interested to know what it means.
20. Hi Geoff and welcome to ExTS May I ask - are you a cacher trying to solve Obfuscation II ( Yorkshire )
21. Hi There is not much left :) It is not an Operating System problem - so not software or drivers It is not a PSU problem or RAM It is not the Video Card There is only the motherboard and CPU and left. One other thing to look at. How dusty is the case? Pay particular attention to fans and vents. Use a can of compressed air ( outside ? ) or a soft brush. Take a close look at the motherboard capacitors - you are looking for discolouration or leakage or domed tops.
22. Vr5fx wrote earlier ...
23. Hi again Norman Try this ( I am on Vista so it may be a little different ) Click on My Computer > on the toolbar at the top click Tools > Folder Options > View Put a check in "Show Hidden Files and Folders" Make sure "Hide Extensions for Known File Types" is not checked Apply / OK Then: C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live\Contacts Username will be your name. The "Contacts" should be the email addresses. Can you delete the ones you want from there?
24. Sorry about that - it must relate to a different version. If you can see the email addresses - what do you get if you right click on one ? Do you get an option to delete ?
