1. You could give a local tech ( small firm NOT PC World or similar ) a ring and ask if they can test your PSU / Video Card. Ask how much they charge. This will identify which ( if any ) of the two is at fault. It shouldn't cost too much. I don't think it is a virus.
2. Sorry - forgot you were using XP ...........Wireless Zero as you rightly show in the bottom pic :) If you look at the ipconfig /all that you post the IP Address shown is an odd one ( not seen this before ). Try this with the ethernet cable connected: Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Local Area Network > Properties Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) > Properties Put a check in the box next to "Use The Following IP Address" For the IP Address put in 192 -168 - 2 - 1 Subnet Mask = 255 - 255 - 255 - 0 Default Gateway = 192 - 168- 2 - 1 You will need to change the DNS Server too. Set the Preferred to 8-8-8-8 And the Alternate to 8-8-4-4 Do the same with the wireless connection. Click OK to finish. Try the connection again - both with the cable and wireless.
3. Try taking the CMOS battery off the motherboard for 1 minute then replace it. ( + uppermost ) This will reset the BIOS to defaults. Try F8 again. Is the keyboard USB ? ============= Try taking the RAM out and replace just one. Try booting up now. If the same problem still exists swap the modules over and try the other one by itself.
4. Sorry - no on-board connection. You have 2 DVI connections from the one card ( bottom pic ) If you can borrow a video card this would help. Alternatively you could buy an inexpensive one to try. NOTE: I have removed the bottom pic. I could read the product code off the Microsoft label quite clearly - if I could ....others could. You could find that your product code would have ended up all over the net :)
5. Hi and welcome to ExTS I deleted your post asking how to ask for help and changed the title to be more appropriate :) Who are you using for a mail client ? ( Outlook Express / Gmail .......?? ) If it is internet based - change your password. Download MBAM from here: (You want the free version ) http://www.malwarebytes.org/ Don't worry if you get re-directed. Install and run it. It will produce a log. Copy this and post it here please.
6. Hi and welcome to ExTS Well - you succeeded in creating 2 new threads and adding to one .....well done :)
7. You are welcome :) There will be a cookie on your pc from this site. The restore would not have removed that I don't think.
8. You could try a system restore to a date just before you installed the pack. in English it is ... Start > type in ....system restore ......Enter Click "Next" .............select an appropriate date. Files / photos etc will be OK
9. Take a look at the back of the machine. You will have two VGA connections if you have on-board. The spare one looks like this:
10. Hi Wait a few seconds longer before you start tapping the F8 key. You need to do this about once per second.
11. If the 50 degrees is related to the Video Card then this is reading OK. However, as Armageddon has suggested - run on the on-board video ( if you have one ) I still have doubts re. the PSU if the fan isn't spinning.
12. Hi and welcome to ExTS I think you have hit the nail squarely on the head. :) The fan isn't working so after a few minutes the heat starts building up. Once it hits a pre-set figure ( too hot to handle ) the machine shuts down. Having said that ........... My laptop that I am using at the moment the fan is barely audible. Are you sure the fan is not working? Put you ear to the bottom of the case.
13. I may be able to correct it. Is is BorderCollieSam that you want ? ( missed the i out )
14. Hi, Those temperatures are OK. If it is 4 years old - how much dust is there in the case ? Pay particular attention to the vents and the fans. By the way - were those temps with the side panel on or off ? If off we need temps with the panel on. Also - it would be good if you could run the machine for longer so that the temperatures have time to build to their maximum. EDIT: Just read this again: This is the most likely cause of your problem. Do you have another PSU that you could try ? ( it is easier to swap them than test them :) )
15. Hi and welcome to ExTS
16. Shut down then re-boot. Immediately start tapping F8 > this will take you to the Advanced Startup Options. Select Safe Mode. Does it boot up OK using this method ? ( graphics will be odd ) Do you get the dots appearing ? ============== Start > type in ......devmgmt.msc ...........> Enter Click on the + next to Display Adapters Are there any yellow exclamation marks ?
17. Hi, Please try the following: Start .....type in .....services.msc ....ENTER Scroll down. WLAN Autoconfig should be Started and Automatic - is it ? ============= Start > type in ......devmgmt.msc .....Enter Click the + next to Network Adapters Are there any yellow exclamation marks ? Start > type in ......cmd.......do not hit Enter yet Right click on the cmd.exe that appears top left of screen > Run as Administrator At the prompt type: ipconfig /release ( there is a space after ipconfig ) then type: ipconfig /renew Try the connection wireless now.
18. Hi and welcome to ExTS Checking the specs on your machine the Video Card is listed as GeForceā„¢ 7650 GS. I was hoping that there would be an on-board video option too - but this does not appear to be the case. I suspect the video ( graphics ) card. You could try taking it out ( there is one small screw to remove ) and cleaning the contacts with a pencil eraser before putting it back. Take this opportunity to clean the case of dust. Use a can of compressed air or a soft brush. Pay particular attention to the video card. ( this is best done outside for obvious reasons :) )
19. Sorry for the late reply - I missed your last post !! At least we know you can connect. You say that your machine connects wirelessly elsewhere - buying a wireless adapter would not solve this I don't think. Give it a try if you wish - they are not expensive. Not sure if we asked this earlier - Can others connect wirelessly to your router ? This will let us know if it is a router or pc problem.
20. Good to hear that you are up and running again. I was hoping that we may be the first :)
21. Hi try this from the elevated command prompt: ( run as administrator ) netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log Also ... Start > Control Panel > Network & Sharing Center > Manage Network Connections ( on the left ) You should see your Local Area Connection and the Wireless one. What does it say under Local Area Connection ? Does it say "Disabled" ? (mine says network cable unplugged)
22. No - no log. What it does is load Windows with just the basics. It sounds as if you have a problem with a specific service or driver. Try it as it is for a while to test - if it is OK we can, if you wish, try looking for the problem. ( long job :) ) Take a look here: Start ....type in ....devmgmt.msc .....Enter Click the + next to each entry. You are looking for yellow exclamation marks.
23. Hi What happens if you now try .... netsh int ip install
24. Hi again, Try Diagnostic Startup Start > type in ....msconfig .....Enter Put a check next to Diagnostic Startup > OK This will run basic drivers and services. See how you get on with this. You will need a re-start.
25. Hi From the elevated command prompt try these again please: netsh winsock reset catalog netsh int ip reset reset.log Re-boot the machine. There is a FixIt here: (scroll down ) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357 You would have to save this to a pen-drive and run it from there.
