1. Hi Marc I should have said ...... chkdsk G: ............the G: refers to the letter that is attached to the external drive. I am assuming that the "G" showing in Computer is in fact the external drive. You would need to check in "Computer" first.
2. That doesn't look like an error message to me - it is a URL. Where does this "error" show ? Can you provide a screen shot ? Do you have Quiklinx software on your system ?
3. Hi and welcome to ExTS I don't use Messenger - so this is what I found ( hope it works for you ) 1 Open Windows Live Messenger. 2 Select the email address you'd like to remove from the sign-in field's drop-down list. 3 Click the blue downward-pointing arrow just below the password field to bring up an expanded list of options. 4 Click the (Forget Me) link. 5 Confirm that you'd like to remove the email address from the sign-in menu. The address disappears immediately after you click "Yes."
4. If you don't have any RAM to swap you could try the existing ones one at a time.
5. Start > type in ........devmgmt.msc .......Enter Click the + next to "Mice and Other Pointing Devices" Right click on the laptop mousepad > Click on "Uninstall" If you have your USB mouse connected it may be confusing which is which. Unplug your USB mouse and the screen should refresh showing you the drivers that need to be uninstalled. When you reboot the machine Windows will re-install the drivers for the mouse-pad.
6. This is getting to be a long thread - sometimes it is easier to ask than to read the whole thread again just in case the question has been asked before. With SATA - if there are 2 Operating Systems to choose from normally you will be given a choice. From what you say this doesn't appear to be happening. The "Timeout" in the first ( New Drive ) BOOT.INI is 1. If this is the first in the boot order it will only wait for a second before loading that one. Is this what is happening ? Also both Operating Systems are "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" - which is the default. The second may need to be changed.
7. This may sound odd but give it a try ...... Take the battery out and unplug the mains adapter. Hold the power button down for a good few minutes. Leave the battery and mains power disconnected for an hour then try the machine again. I have seen this work with similar problems :)
8. This is what confused me from your first post. So - you have 2 drives installed with XP on each. How are the drives connected ? IDE / SATA ? Both on the same IDE cable ? One as Master other as Slave ? When you boot up off the main drive ( C: ? ) what drive letter is allocated to the other drive ? I still think you need to alter the BOOT.INI of the primary drive.
9. Hi claira, Try the following: Start .....type in ......cmd.......[do not hit Enter yet ] Right click on cmd.exe that appears top left of screen > Run as Administrator At the command prompt type ........sfc /scannow .....Hit Enter [ there is a space after sfc ] This will check the system files. If you have a Win7 disk you may be asked for it if there are any problems.
10. Hi Take a look here: http://www.ehow.com/how_5887147_fix-mozilla-firefox.html and here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJHwpZPunkQ
11. It sounds as if the drive was not formatted but you elected to have another version of XP installed alongside the first. Do you have to go into the BIOS before you can boot up the machine? If so - what do you do each time ? Can you post a copy of the BOOT.INI file please. Start > Run .....type in .....msconfig ......Enter Click on "BOOT.INI" from the tabs along the top.
12. Hi Colin Anything is possible. I have never had a problem with TweakUI before. Download MBAB from here ( you may get re-directed .....this is OK ) You want the FREE version http://www.malwarebytes.org/ Install and run it. It will produce a log. Copy this and post it here. This is what you should see from TweakUI - do you ?
13. Do you have a USB mouse that you can try ? Does the same thing happen with that ?
14. Hi and welcome to ExTS In addition to what Nev has asked ..... If you leave the battery out and use just the power adapter .....does the laptop boot up and restart / shutdown normally ?
15. I agree with Nev - it does sound like a PSU problem. nearly forgot my manners ......welcome to ExTS :)
16. Hi and welcome to ExTS You don't buy a PSU to be compatible with a motherboard - it is usually the Graphics Card and other hardware that decides on the Wattage. There are different designs of PSU too. This explains: http://www.evercase.co.uk/PowerSupplyMeasurement.htm Chances are that you have the standard one - but you see the options :) Which one do you have at the moment ? OCZ / Corsair / Thermaltake / Enermax / Antec are all good makes.
17. Hi again Colin It is a long time since I used TweakUI so bear with me ...... If you install and run it there should be - on the left side - some indication of Hard Drives. If you click on this all of the possible hard drive letters are shown. Make sure that each of them has a tick next to it. If you need to change any then finish with Apply/OK
18. If the OS is 64 bit then yes - probably. It all depends on the motherboard and what it will support.
19. Hi Nev 1 x 20+4-pin ATX 1 x 4+4-pin ESP/12V CPU 1 x 6+2-pin PCI-E 1 x 6 pin PCI-E 2 x 4-pin Peripheral 4 x 5-pin SATA It has 2 x 4 pin connections :)
20. I assume they do not show up in "Computer" either ? Is this XP we are working with ? if it is - download TweakUI from here http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/downloads/windows-xp Scroll down the page. I will explain in the next post if you install it.
21. Yes - no problem with the power.
22. Hi from what I can find - that PSU will give you 45 Amps total on the 12v rail
23. Hi and welcome to ExTS You say that the Hard Drives do not show up in Disk Management. Please go back and check this for me .... Is there a drive space showing that does not have a drive letter associated with it ? When you connect the drive - does it spin ?
24. There is a lot of illegal software out there - especially on auction sites. It is relatively easy to install a new Operating System when you have legitimate disks :)
