1. Yes PSU = Power Supply Unit. They look like this: All the wires make it look complicated to fit - but they are relatively easy. They are not too expensive. Yours will probably be around 300 Watts click here Some PSUs are better than others.
2. If you formatted the drive - how are you running Memtest ? Try - just to test - installing Linux onto the drive. See if that installs. click here
3. Hi I have never heard of a computer dying of "old Age" - there has to be a reason :) There is a possibility ( as Terry0912 has already suggested ) that the PSU is playing up. They can do this - they don't just stop working sometime ......they become intermittent ......working OK then lack of power. The only real test is to swap the PSU for a known good one. There are no guarantees. If the tech you visited has a spare one he may let you test it first before you buy it :)
4. Hi Trazza I have altered your profile so that you should get an email when etavares replies to your thread. By subscribing to a thread you get emails when the helper replies. ( Hopefully this should not be necessary now :) ) If you need to click on "Thread Tools" at the top of the thread then click on "Subscribe"
5. Hi Can you connect the problem drive to another computer and format it from there ? Once formatted run a chkdsk /f on the drive. Is the XP CD an original or a copy ?
6. Hi John I have changed your profile to "Instant email Notification" - hope this works for you.
7. No problems as far as I am aware. What happens ? Tell Starbuck ......I tell him and he doesn't believe me :) Sorry Sue - I mis-read your first post and didn't register the "hyperlink" issue. If you send him a document with hyperlinks in - if he can open one .......can he open all ? In other words if one doesn't open ......they all don't open.
8. Hi Sue I think it is related to the format you are saving the file in. Word 2010 - by default - saves files with a .docx extension. Older versions of Word use .doc Your friend's version will not be able to open yours if this is the case. 2 options: 1. You have the option to save as Word 97 ( .doc ) by clicking the down arrow next to "Save as Type " 2. There is a compatibility pack from MS http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3 Your friend would need to install this to be able to open Word 2010 documents saved with the .docx ectension.
9. Hi, I am sorry that you are having problems. I am, however, concerned re: this...... If your installation of Win7 is not a genuine version that you own then we cannot help any further I am sorry. If your XP disk is genuine and is not installed on any other computer then you could use this.
10. Hi Trazza I am sure one of our security experts will get to you soon. Please be patient - they are extremely busy people :)
11. Hi, Take the old drive out and put the new one in. Install XP on the new drive. You will need to format and decide how many partitions you want on the new drive. If you create more than one partition make sure you install XP onto C: When you connect the old drive again ( you now have 2 drives connected ) you may be prompted on boot-up to select the drive to boot from. If you want to leave Windows on the old disk you should be able to select the New drive in the BIOS as the first in the boot order.
12. Hi Durks and welcome to ExTS Does this help at all ? http://computershopper.com/storage/howto/install-a-new-hard-drive-in-five-easy-steps
13. Just to add my welcome ( and my two-pennyworth ) :) It is never a good idea to keep the second drive ( not the main drive ) connected when installing a new OS. Just have the master drive connected > then connect the second drive after installation. Are these IDE Drives ( broad grey cable ) ?
14. One way to check .... Remove one of the modules ( leave the other in ) Run the machine. If it runs OK but not with the other module in place > it is a faulty module. If it runs slow with just one module - swap them over and try the other to see if there is a difference.
15. I asked very early on - is the wireless adapter switched on / disabled ?
16. Hi Sorry for the late reply :) Not all systems have a card - many are built straight onto the main board and cannot be removed. The RAM modules look like this: http://knoji.com/images/user/ram_slot_1.jpg They may not be exactly the same but the slots they sit in are. There will be a locking lever at each end. You push this outwards and downwards to release the module. To put it back in place - place the module in the slot ( it has to go the correct way around ....little notch in the contacts ) Then push down on one end > then the other. The locking levers will automatically lock it into place.
17. Hi and welcome to ExTS Chances are that the card has moved in the slot and is not making proper contact. Switch off at the wall and take the side panel off. Remove the card and clean the contacts with a pencil eraser. ( there may be a small screw to remove ) Blow out the slot. Replace the card and try again.
18. Now that you are clear - I can suggest a good book on bird recognition :)
19. You can go off people you know :)
20. I will add a bit more information ..... Take a look here: http://s13.zetaboards.com/kenspchelp/topic/6964867/1/#new Ask him to 1. unplug at the wall and disconnect the printer / monitor / any other external device 2. take the RAM modules out and also the Video Card if there is one. 3. Switch on. At this point we are looking for fans spinning and beeps from the machine. (you will not get beeps if there is no internal speaker ) 4. If all is OK at this stage switch off and connect the monitor again ( this may need the Video Card putting back in ) Try again. You should get more beeps and see something on the monitor. 5. If you get to this stage then put the RAM modules back one at a time. If one doesn't work ( no boot up ) then swap it for the other. Let me know which stage you got to and the results in some detail please :)
21. Hi and welcome to ExTS Are you using Chrome as a browser? Does this happen if you use Internet Explorer ?
22. This may help:
23. Hi, I will change the thread title to reflect your problem :) Are you happy to take a look inside the case ? ( It may look complicated but it isn't really ) If so ....switch off at the wall. Take the side cover off ( you will probably need a screwdriver ) Get back to me when you are at this stage. ( If I am going too slow just say so :) )
24. Hi, I think there may be a bit of confusion with the terminology. ( A Modem is an external device used to connect to the internet ) Are you referring to the start button on the case of your desktop computer? The green light - is this near the start button on the case ? What is the make and model number of your computer ? [ This could be a Power Supply problem ....which is relatively cheap to put right ]
25. Hi BeeJay You could take a look at this: click here It is a bit expensive - but if only for a short time it may solve your problem. If you already have unlimited BT then this is free. EDIT: just read your last post ..... Is this what you need ? http://www.broadband.co.uk/guides/change-provider/
