Very strange, latop effecting internet speed issue help!!!
KenB replied to 515mhz's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
If the drop is only 0.29 Mb/s this is not worth worrying about. If you can find out what the download speed should be this would help. Out of interest re your slow startup... Download and run MBAM from here. ( click on Products ....you want the free version ) http://www.malwarebytes.org/ It will produce a log when the scan is complete. Copy this and post it here please. -

Hi There is not a great difference between 1.93 Mb/s and 1.64Mb/s What does your ISP suggest that you should be receiving ( max ) -
Jens Harald I am sorry nobody replied to your posts. The reason for this is that you attached your posts to a thread started by somebody else. When we look down the new posts it looks like you have replied to the original thread starter with assistance to their problem and we would therefore assume that you were not asking for help. It is always best to start a new thread if you are asking for assistance :)

Help please! IE9 and wireless on Win7
KenB replied to crl's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
It could be linked with your wireless adapter. Get a stable connection - Use F-F if this is running OK we don't want it to drop out. Start > type in .....devmgmt.msc ......ENTER Click the + next to Network Adapters and your wireless adapter should be listed ( it will say something like WiFi Link ...... ) What does it say is listed ? [let me know if there are any yellow exclamation marks or red Xs ) Right click on the wireless adapter > Update Driver Software Use the automatic option ( you will need internet access ) Let me know the results. -

Hi and welcome to ExTS This is a strange one !! If your laptop is on - all other wireless machines slow down ...........is this correct ? If you connect one of the other machines by cable to the router does it slow down too ? Use this speed test and test one of the other machines with your machine on and off. Let us know the results. http://www.speedtest.net/ Wait for the "Begin Test" to appear. How many other machines are connected to the router ? Switch the router off - wait 30 seconds - switch it on again. Try the speedtest again. -
Help please! IE9 and wireless on Win7
KenB replied to crl's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
benstiller You sound very definite on the points you have made. 1. How do you know that crl's hardware is incompatible with IE ? 2. Could you explain in a little more detail how IE is linked to Virtual Memory ? Bear in mind that this system is running Win7 and will probably have at least 4GB RAM - it may have been prudent to ask. I have removed the external link from your signature - they are not allowed here. -

I know you are attached to IE but try this one - just to see if it crashes too. http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron.php I use it and like it a lot. It is good to have an alternative browser ............just in case :) Was IE9 on your system when you bought it ? Try the following: Start ....type in ......cmd .....( do not hit Enter ) Right click on cmd.exe that shows top left of screen Click on Run as Administrator At the prompt type in .......sfc /scannow ...... ENTER This will check the system files. IE is an integral part of Windows. You may be prompted for the installation disk. If you don't have one run the sfc anyway. -

This CAN have a detrimental affect. You are better to use Task Manager as Randy suggests. -

Hi and welcome to ExTS I was thinking m/board when I was reading your post. Do you get any POST beeps when you switch on ? ( assuming that there is an internal speaker ? ) Take a look here and follow the tutorial: http://kenspchelp.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=172 If there is no internal speaker follow the process anyway. The internal fans should spin and the hard drive should be active. [ just because there is an LED lit on the m/board and fans spin this does not mean that the PSU / m/board are good to go ] -
Help please! IE9 and wireless on Win7
KenB replied to crl's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Yes - it confirms that it is a problem with IE and not related to the connection dropping out. Try this Auto-Fix http://support.microsoft.com/mats/ie_performance_and_safety/en-us (hopefully it is compatible with IE9 .....) -
Hi Rosmon You are right to be concerned about sending your system away - but returning it to factory settings is a bit extreme in my opinion. I have already stated that if you have files / family photos etc that you would not want anybody looking at then these need to be copied to a disk or external drive or Cloud. (copies to 2 different places would be better) You talk about cloning your hard drive. This is good practice but if it is necessary to replace your motherboard then a cloned image of your old drive will be no use to you as the main system hardware will have changed. If you did manage to re-install the image onto a new hard drive it still wouldn't boot up. Cloud is not a suitable location for a cloned image of your hard drive as your system needs access to the image to install it. You do not have internet access at this stage. There is no way that passwords to banking accounts can be traced by somebody repairing your computer. There is "Keylogger" software ( often malware ) that does do this but it needs to on your system first. Saved passwords ( stored by Windows ) could be accessible using software. Where do you go from here: I suggest you take reasonable precautions but it is not necessary to go over the top. 1. Decide if you are going to use a DVD or external hard drive. I prefer an external hard drive. Having a backup of your important files / data makes sense. 2. Create a folder for "Word Files" ..........."Photos" ..........."Other" ...........etc. on the desktop of your machine. 3. Move all important data into the relevant folders. 4. Copy the folders to the external drive / DVD ( remember copies to 2 different places is better ) 5. Check that you can open the files / photos that are now stored on the external drive / DVD. 6. Delete the folders from the desktop. 7. Delete the files etc from the computer hard drive. 8. Just to be sure .......... Start ....type in .doc .docx .jpg .xls .xlsx This will search for Word / photos / Database documents for you to check if they are ok to leave. ( assuming you have MS Office on your system ) You could then do the following: 9. Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Delete Select "Cookies" ......"History" ........"Temp Files" Delete This will clear your website browsing history and remove the legitimate software that they use to speed up the browsing when you re-visit the sites. It will also clear the auto-login to sites like this ( e-bay too ) 10. Make absolutely sure that - if you use internet banking - that you have removed any reference to your bank and login details. These guys are repairing computers all day - every day. If people were getting their banks hacked or personal details put over the web there would be complaints and investigations. You need to be vigilant but it is not necessary to completely wipe your hard drive prior to a repair :)

When IE crashes ....... bottom right of screen there is an icon that looks like 2 monitors. Point the screen curser at this. Does it say "Access: Local and Internet" Does the same happen with F-F ? Did you upgrade to IE9 from IE8 ? If so IE9 may show in Control Panel > Programs and Features Try highlighting it and select "Repair" if this is an option. -

KenB replied to crl's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi and welcome to ExTS It is definitely not due to an "old" machine. - I am using a 5 year old laptop at the moment and have no problems at all. I assume this is a cable connection you are using ? Let's take a look at IE first ( the wireless problem will have more possible options ) Start > Control Panel ( you may need to switch to "Category" view) > Internet Options > Advanced > click Reset -

If your drive is showing 35 Gb used then you will need at least 40Gb of external drive space.
