1. If I can put in my 2 cents worth again .... I posted - (then deleted the post as starbuck replied at the same time) - that I would remove Norton ( assuming that you can still re-install if you want to ) and put MS Essentials on your system to try for a while just to see if you get the same problems. This way you can eliminate Norton from the equation.
2. I think you have a HP Pavillion click here If this is the case you are possibly going to have a few problems. The motherboard is uATX .............ultra small form factor to fit in the small case. Motherboard specs click here It does suggest that it accepts PCIe x 16 cards with no mention of low profile. Normally small form factor boards need a low profile card. You are going to need a low profile Video Card I think You may also find that an upgrade PSU from 300Watts to say 500Watts is difficult to find. It is an internal ATX Does it have a Video Card installed at the moment or are you using on-board graphics ( chip on the m/board ) ?
3. Is this you? [link removed]
4. Is this your board? http://www.foxconnchannel.com/Upload/Mainboard/200710260227320328_662M_1-1.jpg If so then there is one PCIe socket - the long yellow one. The Videon Card will fit here.
5. geforce gts 8600 This card is a PCIe x16 Is that motherboard is a Foxconn ? If it is you are looking for a ref number similar to a74ml-k
6. Hi, I have just tried Distrowatch.com and the site is accessible. It could be that they are blocking your IP Address. I was searching sites yesterday and came across one that told me I was banned - considering I had never been there before it must have been IP Address related. Do you just get "Cannot Connect" or another message? Interestingly - I use TalkTalk too ................so it doesn't look like anything at their end.
7. That doesn't ring any bells. Post what you can find and we can take it from there. This shows 2 PCIe x16 slots ( blue ) yours may have only 1 ...................or none :) (They are not always blue - just to add to the confusion )
8. If it is a purpose built PC then we need to check out the motherboard to see if it has a PCIe slot for your card. Chances are that it has - but it is best to check. There should be a make and number in large letters on the motherboard. Can you take a look and let me know please. If this is the card : http://www.evga.com/products/moreinfo.asp?pn=01G-P3-1556-KR You only need a 400Watt PSU minimum so yours should be fine.
9. Hopefully you will have more luck with the replacement . Let us know how you get on.
10. Thanks for the further information :)
11. Hi and welcome to ExTS Your choice is limited by what you want to spend. Take a look here: click here Depending on the PSU that you have you may need to upgrade this as well. Post the make and model number of your PC.
12. Hi and welcome to ExTS Didn't you used to play for Manchester United? :) I need to know the make and model number of your PC and the size ( in Watts ) of your Power Supply. The PC details will do if you don't know the PSU details.
13. Go back to Network Adapters in Device Manager ( devmgmt.msc ) click the + and right click on the devices listed > uninstall. Shut down. Make sure you have a known working NIC on the motherboard. Reboot. Windows will find new hardware and install the drivers. Try connecting now. If no luck ..... Go back to Device Manager > what is listed against Network Adapters ?
14. According to the Fujitsu site the drivers for your NIC are embedded in XP. If this is the case then it could be that there is a problem with the card ( it is actually a chip ) itself. The drivers needed are Realtek RTL8139 and it is this that should be showing in Device Manager. Go back to Network Adapters in Device Manager ( devmgmt.msc ) right click on each of the devices with a yellow exclamation mark > uninstall. Re-boot the machine. Windows should locate new hardware and, if the drivers are embedded, should auto install them. If not then the drivers are here: click here Windows XP > click on US1 or US2
15. Yes - that's it. You must make sure that the PSU is compatible. I found this: (it suggests that it is compatible with your Acer machine ) http://www.amazon.com/ATXPowerSupplies-DPS-220UB-PY-22009-003-PY-22009-006-PY-2200B-001/dp/B006GJN8RQ If this is the style of PSU that you have then it is not a standard ATX one. You may have difficulty finding an upgrade to the 500Watts needed.
16. I suspect that you need to return the card as faulty. Try it in another machine to see if you get the same result.
17. Connect the drive up to the second pc using a spare SATA connection on the m/board and a spare power connection. If there isn't a spare power connection use the one off the CDROM drive. Check that the drive is being recognised and is visible in "Computer". Use this opportunity to take off the drive anything that you want by way of data / files / photos etc. If the drive is visible make a note of the drive letter ( let's say Z:\ ) Start ....type in .....cmd ........do not hit ENTER yet Right click on cmd.exe that shows top left of screen > Run as Administrator At the prompt type in chkdsk Z: /r/f (space eitherside of Z: ) substitute your drive letter for Z: This will check the drive for any errors and attempt to fix any that it finds.
18. Let us know how it goes :)
19. You got through the installation process - but it now fails to boot up again . ................is this correct? Assuming this is a SATA hard drive ? ......can you connect it up to another system to run a check on the disk itself ? You can use the existing SATA Data cable and a power connection from the other pc.
20. OK - thanks for the additional information. Is there any chance that you can follow Startbuck's post?
21. Hi and welcome to ExTS I have had to edit your post as it was virtually unreadable due to throughout the post. ?? Windows cannot boot up at all - is this correct? Can you get to the Advanced Startup Options by tapping F8 about once per second after switching on ? If you can - try "Last Known Good Configuration" Is "Repair this Computer" listed in the Advanced Options ?
22. Hi and welcome to ExTS Start > type in .......services.msc ............ENTER Scroll down and locate the Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint services. Make sure that they are both set to Auto. If you need to change it - double click on the service and change the Startup Type > OK
23. Hi, Switch off and connect the monitor to the old Video connection. Put the new card in. Switch on. If it boots up go to Device Manager Start > type in .......devmgmt.msc ..............ENTER Click "Action" > Scan for Hardware Changes.
24. You are welcome. Let us know how you get on.
25. If I can but in whist Starbuck is off-line ..... This is probably correct but to check .... Start > right click on My Computer > Properties This will tell you the Operating System and how much RAM is in the machine.
