1. This is good news. Well done for staying with it :)
2. Put it back as before. Boot up. Start > Run .....type in ....devmgmt.msc .......ENTER 1. What is listed if you click on the + next to "Display Adapters" ? 2. Are there and yellow exclamation marks or red Xs ?
3. Try the monitor in the other socket. See what the results are using that one.
4. Right click in a grey area close to the clock > Properties > Notification Area Is the Volume Control Checked there ?
5. That's what we are here for. The installation was very easy - prompted from the CD.
6. Hi, Just noticed - we are almost neighbours :) [ Wirral ] ERROR 797, unable to connect because modem not found You ONLY get this error with OE ? You can connect using a different browser on the desktop? Is this correct? OE is part of the system files and cannot easily be deleted - so BT were right. You can try the following to repair IE and OE Start > Run ....type in .....sfc /scannow .......ENTER Note the space after sfc. It may take a little while to run through.
7. Good to hear that your graphics are back to normal. Have you got the sound muted? Click on the speaker icon bottom right of screen.
8. Hi, The routers are not Operating System specific. I take your point re. reviews - generally people who have a bad experience tend to write them. You have to filter these and look for a good average. If it is any help I recently bought this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TD-W8961ND-300Mbps-Wireless-Router/dp/B004ERXXHC/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1326360435&sr=8-7 This has a modem too ( most are ) and has wireless and wired (ethernet) capability.
9. That's what I was hoping to do from your mum's laptop. There is no guarantee that this would work - but it would be worth a try.
10. Take a look here: click here You don't need an expensive one. Make sure you read the reviews.
11. Strangely - that was the number I used and they spoke to me. Perhaps it was because I was renewing my subscription :)
12. we can try this later. I will write the instructions to save a bit of time :) Assuming that your mum's OS is the same as your own. ( I think you said it was earlier ) Take the non-working hard drive out and put it in the enclosure again. Connect the enclosure up to your mum's machine. Click on Start > Computer > X:\ > Windows > System32 ......................( where X = the drive letter of your hard drive ) Scroll down to winload.exe Right click on this > Rename make it winloadold.exe Now go back to C:\ ( this is your mum's hard drive ) Click on C:\ > Windows > System32 Scroll down to winload.exe > right click on this > Copy Go back to your drive > Windows > System32 Scroll down past the folders > right click > Paste Put the drive back in the problem computer and try booting.
13. I'm with TalkTalk and just got a free D-Link Wireless + Wired router off them for free. 0800 049 7843 Give this number a call. Explain that you are using an old modem ( not a router ) that was supplied by them and you are now having problems. You have been told that they are supplying new AND existing customers with a new router. Ask if they could do the same for you. I used the 0800 number and the lady I spoke to sounded almost local to me. They are available until 8-00pm Let me know what they say.
14. It is getting to the point where it wants to load Windows. Before it gets to this point we should be able to get to the recovery console. (If it exists) Try this again please: Switch off > then hold down the Zero ( 0 ) key. Keep this help down and switch on. Keep the zero help down until something happens. What happens when you do this? =================== Another option: On your mum's laptop ....... Start > All Programs Is "Recovery Disk Creator" or similar available? or try.... Start, All Programs, Maintenance, Create a Recovery Disc. If your mum has not created her Recovery Disks yet - it should be there. ==================== Give Toshiba a ring and ask about recovery disks for your machine Phone 0844 847 8944 ==================== We could try copying your mum's winload.exe file and replacing yours with the copy. This is easily done.
15. Hi and welcome to ExTS Do you have access to the internet with this PC using a different browser - FireFox for instance ? The Laptop is OK with OE ? Is it "Dial Up" Which version of OE is on the XP machine ?
16. Found this that may be useful. http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD7C02140000R01.htm Switch off > then hold down the Zero ( 0 ) key. Keep this help down and switch on. Keep the zero help down until something happens. Hopefully you will see this: Do You ?
17. Can you get to the Advanced Options by tapping F8 ? If you tap F12 when initially switching on - does that take you to a recovery console ? EDIT: ( Ignore F12 - I think the solution lies with my post below )
18. Take a look at the back of the machine where the monitor cable is connected. If you have two sockets like this : One will probably be the onboard video. ( unless the Video Card has two outputs ).
19. Hi and welcome to ExTS That is going back a few years ! Do you have broadband connection now? If so - how are you connecting? Are you still with TalkTalk ? If so - they will supply you with a router free of charge if you talk to them nicely :)
20. If you have - then we can try that and eliminate the Video Card. Failing that I can only suggest a replacement Video Card and hope that solves your problem. You could try your card in another system - but if your card is damaged this may cause problems in the second PC.
21. Not looking good. Try this: Note - all data /files / photos will be lost. all installed programs will be lost. Attempt to boot up - constantly tap F8 about once per second. You will be taken to the Advanced Startup Options. (you may have to try a few times to get the timing of F8 right ) Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate the menu. Select "Repair Your Computer" ( hopefully this will be available) Select your language and keyboard; click "Next." Select your Windows user name from the drop-down menu. Enter your password if required. (leave blank if you don't have one) Click "OK." This will begin the "System Recovery Options" menu. Startup Repair System Restore Windows Complete PC Restore Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool Command Prompt Toshiba Recovery Wizard Try Startup Repair first. If this works for you then your data etc should be OK. If it doesn't then ...... Select the Toshiba Recovery Wizard and follow the onscreen instructions. The Toshiba Recovery Wizard will delete all existing data on the hard drive and reinstall Windows.
22. I assume that this is the "Pete" to whom you refer ? http://extremetechsupport.com/threads/2851-Vista-Boot-Problem-PC-Freezes-During-boot-up.?p=83670#post83670 Can you outline your problems please and we can take it from there :)
23. Here's hoping ................... Put the drive back in the bracket and install it in your laptop. Try booting up again.
24. Hi and welcome to ExTS I have merged your two threads. I found your CPU a bit cheaper - and no delivery charges http://www.amazon.co.uk/Intel-Sandybridge-i5-2500-Quad-Core-Processor/dp/B004FA8NNW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1326234254&sr=8-2 You don't mention the OS I assume with 8GB RAM you are installing a 64 bit system ? Have you taken the cost of this into account?
