  1. Hi and welcome to ExTS When you switch on - do you get any LEDs lit or hard drive / fan sounds ? ===================== Switch on - constantly tap F8 about once per second. Try "Last Known Good Configuration" from the list of options. ===================== Will it boot up in Safe Mode ( from the same list ) ?
  2. A red band across the top ? I am confused. If you bought a full version then why would you need to download anything? I have seen this error before. You are only allowed to verify Office a set number of times ( I think it is either 3 or 5 ). Where did you buy the version of Office from that you installed ?
  3. Hi Nasher, Do you have a full XP installation CD or is it recovery disk? If it is a full version, we can try a Repair Install if necessary ( this way your data should be retained ). ================= Does the machine freeze if you run it in Safe Mode? Constantly tap F8 ( about once per second ) after switching on . Also, from the same list, try "Last Known Good Configuration"
  4. Hi kathi I am sorry that we never got to the bottom of this one. Please let us know what, if anything, your IT person finds as I, for one, would be interested to know what tthe problem was.
  5. Hi David, If you paid for a repair and they have not fixed it, or in doing so they have created another problem ( validation ) then they are obliged to fix it at no cost to you. The validation problem is NOT linked to any installed software. It is the installed OS that has not passed the validation test or has not yet been validated. I have already said - If you are getting validation problems then this is their responsibility. They installed the OS. As J-B as already said - if you have the original XP installation disk or recovery disk then it is a simple matter to reinstall. If the shop has put a new OS on your system then they are responsible for the validation problem. Do not pay them any more. You may, after you get your computer back, wish to let them know ( if you suspect that the OS was illegal that they put on your machine ) that you intend to inform Microsoft. MS take this very seriously. See here: http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/reporting/default.aspx When you get your machine home run the Validation process. This will determine if the installed OS is legal. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/help/genuine/what-is-validation You can then take it from there.
  6. I have to tell you that, if your friend still has XP Pro on his machine, your installation is illegal. If this is the case then we would not be able to advise any further as it would put the forum in an awkward situation with Microsoft ( to put it mildly ).
  7. Hi kathi, Use the New HDD. Use the Recovery Disks supplied to you by HP. This should guide you through the process. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01684708&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en
  8. Hi, Depends what you wanted to do. You would have been prompted to "press any key to boot from CD" From here you would have had options - one of them would have been a repair install of XP. Is this what you did? Have you still got all of your files / data or did it get wiped ? You cannot repair Home with Pro. Have you lost all of your data and now have XP Pro on your machine.
  9. Have you formatted and put your friend's version of XP on your machine ?
  10. You have posted this on at least 6 forums !! Brian Svidergol & contitego posted long posts to you yesterday - which you have not had the decency to reply to. ( different forums ) You should realise that good manners cost nothing. If you need advice try the local careers office. Try writing to university departments and ask their advice. Write to IT firms and ask them what they would expect from a job applicant. You have to realise that a degree is no guarantee of a job. You have to sell yourself.
  11. Hi, Hope this is the same in Win7 ..... Start > Control Panel > network & sharing > Manage Network Connections ( left pane ) > Right Click on "Access to Local Internet" > Properties Uncheck IPv6(TCP/IP) > OK go back .... Highlight IPv4(TCP/IP) > Properties Make sure "Obtain IP Address Automatically" and "Obtain DNS Server Automatically" is checked.
  12. Hi kathi, I am getting a fuller picture now :) ( not before time you say ! ) Is this the disk they sent you? http://www.technologycustomerservice.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/Recovery-CD-HP-Vista-B.png If so - this is a recovery disk. Take a look here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00809678&dlc=en&lc=en&cc=us&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN#RestoreWithDiscs The Vista (business) disk is the one to use.
  13. Hi kathi, Is this a full installation disk or recovery disk or upgrade disk ? Did you do this from the Vista Disk or another machine ? Do you have a floppy drive on this machine ?
  14. Hi kathi, Stick with it. 1. On your Vista / Win7 disks what does it say? Are they upgrades or full installation disks? I was assuming that they were full installation disks - but am now thinking that they are upgrades. I should have asked this a lot earlier. 2. Is the XP disk a full retail version ? 3. You say you originally had XP then moved to Vista then moved to Win7. When the machine was working did you get an option to boot to XP / Vista / Win7 or did it just go direct to Win7. 4. If you have a full retail version of Vista / Win7 is putting the HDD in another machine to format an option? 5. Do you have a floppy drive on this machine?
  15. Hi kathi Are you saying that you can now boot up ? How many hard drives do you have connected? Is this the old drive that you are refering to here ? This looks as if you have 3 incidences of Windows installed and 1 failed attempt. Are you still getting the same error message when you try to boot from the Vista disk ?
  16. Thanks for the input Randy. I had registered that earlier but we are getting the same problem with Vista too. kathi, I would be inclined to connect the new drive to another machine - find it in disk manager - format it from there. Is this an option ? All you would need to do would be to take the drive and cable and connect it to a SATA port on the second machine's motherboard. Add a power connector. Switch on and type in .......diskmgmt.msc.......ENTER. You should be able to see the drive here. It may show as Disk1 ........[ Disk 0 is the original drive ] If you can do this there is nothing wrong with the HDD.
  17. kathi, I have loads of patience - I'm just hoping we can get a solution to the problem.
  18. Hi Kathi, Coming back to this: This could have been due to a corrupt / broken HDD or it could have been related to something else. You say that you "sanitised the drive". Effectively you wiped it clean? You have 2 Hard drives that both give you the same error message: I can understand one HDD packing up - but a new one out of the box with the same problem .....................very unlikely. Try this for me please: Take the RAM out and put just one stick back. Try the installation disk now. If you get the same error message - swap the RAM for the other one. ( I am wondering if the RAM was the original problem )
  19. Hi Kathi, I can't keep track on where this is going. You cannot have an Operating System on unallocated space ( no partition ). The HDD needs formatting and start over. Let's forget XP and go with your Vista Business. Put the new HDD in. Put the disk in the drive and switch on. You need to do a complete recovery - not a repair. If you are prompted to create a partition do so. You need a partition on the drive in order to format and install the OS.
  20. Hi, This is an unformatted drive. You need to create a partition first before you format it. You didn't say how big the drive is. You can create 1,2 or 3 partitions if you wish ( The number is up to you ). If you are unsure - create 1. You should get a screen that looks like this: http://www.buildeasypc.com/pics/windows_xp/winxp8.jpg At this point you need to press "C" Then, when prompted, format NTFS. If you can't get this far - you probably need to install SATA controllers ( XP !! ) See here for good explanation: http://www.proposedsolution.com/solutions/windows-xp-setup-setup-did-not-find-any-hard-disk-drives/
  21. So you are trying to install from the original XP disk? If so, Switch on and you will be prompted to "Press DEL [or other key] to Enter Setup" (you have to be fairly quick) This will give you access to the BIOS. You are lookingfor Boot Sequence / Boot Order or similar. Make sure that the CDROM is the first boot device. You will get information on screen on how to move it up the order if necessary. Don't forget to press F10 ( again prompted on screen ) to Save. Please confirm.
  22. If you have a flash drive ( memory stick) then paste the results into Notebook > Save it and paste it here. I am beginning to suspect that your Network Adapter has died. Suggest you get a USB network adapter and give this a try. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-802-11g-Wireless-Network-Adapter/dp/B0006374PK (example only) They are not expensive.
  23. Hi, I know you have recently started a new thread but it is best if all relevant details are kept together. I would be inclined to take the hard drive out of the system and connect it to another machine. From there you can run a chkdsk ( checkdisk ) on it and one or two other tests. The manufacturer should have diagnostic software you can download. You need a hard drive to usb adapter. I am a bit confused when you say this: You say that ... How did you run the checks as they need considerably longer than 10 mins - especially Memtest. Is the HDD in question IDE? Let me know if you wish to take this further.
  24. This is not correct. Start > type in ....services......ENTER Scroll down to Workstation. This should be set to "Automatic". Is it? ===================== I switched my wireless adapter off and was still able to run ipconfig /all. However, if you have no network at all - then it is unlikely to run. Give it a try.
  25. Hi, I am a bit confused. You have mentioned 3 Operating Systems - which one are you trying to install ? Why would HP support provide you with a Vista (business) disk when you had Win7 ? You must have had a Vista disk to upgrade from XP. So do you have: XP disk Vista disk x 2 Win 7 disk ??? ======================== Reformat?? You say you have not been able to install any OS so how can you reformat? ========================= HP support also sent you a new HDD. Is this machine still under waranty ? ========================= Is this HDD an IDE or SATA drive? If IDE - have you set the jumper to "master" setting ? ========================= Does the drive show up in the BIOS ?
