[Solved] Connected with Limited Access
KenB replied to Ray1000's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Ray, To confirm: There is no internet access at all - by cable or wireless ........is this correct ? As you are selling the machine - have you removed software / files etc. ? What exactly have you done in preparation for the sale ? Take a look in Device Manager: Start > type in ......devmgmt.msc .....hit ENTER Click the > next to "Network Adapters" Are there any yellow exclamation marks or red Xs ? -
I have been away for a few days. Good to hear that you have resolved your problem Ray :)
-
Hi Ray, Very often, in cases like yours, Windows will request a shut-down and certain software will refuse to close as they are waiting for data or writing data. You don't have Trusteer Rapport Security Software do you ? I have seen this cause similar problems.

What upgrades should I be considering
KenB replied to grandadfatboy's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi - good to hear from you again :) You have 2 hard-drives available at the moment This is the obvious option unless you decide to go for an SSD drive. Two questions I have - have you had any problems with this drive ? Have you run a diagnostic test on the drive ? It would be a waste of time installing Win10 only to discover that the drive is failing. You don't say how old it is. SSD drives have come down in price but are still relatively expensive. Those people who have them sing their praises. You would find that your system boots up quicker and that software loads and runs faster as access times are far quicker than SATA drives. With no moving parts SSDs are quieter and also would be expected to last longer. Larger SSDs do tend to be very expensive. 500 GB should be OK for most purposes. If you are not too bothered about waiting a little for the system to load etc. then save your money. You may want to take a look here - click here It is a few years old - but most of the information holds good. No - you should be ok to just plug-and-play. A SSD uses the SATA connections on your motherboard. If you have SATA 3 use this. If you connect the SSD to SATA 2 it will still run but you may not see the full benefits - it will still be considerably faster than the SATA hard drive. SSHDs where introduced by Seagate as a cross between SSD and HDD. The implication was that you get SSD performance at something like HDD cost. I can't see how this can be true. They may be a little faster than HDDs but they will not match SSDs for performance. If you a choosing then I suggest either SSD or stay with HDD. You may find this article useful - click here Hope this helps :) -
I am sure that you will be fine Bob :)

Hi Bob, Found this basic page .....click here Don't change anything yet. A few questions: Many router login screens have "Admin" as the username and the password. Is your username "Admin" ? According to this link - your password is on a sticker under the router itself. DON'T post this - but is this different from "Admin" ....in other words is it individual to the router and not a general password ? When you point the screen curser at the wireless icon [ bottom right ] does this indicate the name of the router or is it something like "Home Network" i.e. not able to identify the router? I have a few more questions - but this will do for the moment :)
-
Probably Bob :) - I will take a look and see if I can find anything.
-
Hi Bob Some of the "basic" stuff should be possible. Which make and model router do you have ?
-
Hi Bob, There is a decent article here - click here Check the bit on "Basic Settings You Should Change" first. There is a link on the page. Needless to say - don't attempt anything that you don't understand :)

Hi - I am very sorry that I have taken so long to get back to you. I have not been on the site much lately - and I missed your post too :( I will check your old "Grandad" account details again and make sure that all is ok with that.

Hi Ray No - should just be a case of plug and play. If the 1TB drive is on 0 [Grey] originally then this is likely to be the 6 Gb/s port [ 600 Mb/s ] The other grey port will be 6 Mb/s too. Your DVD drive doesn't need this sort of transfer rate so you can assume that it is on the 3Gb/s port. The logical place for your second hard drive is the spare grey port. I assume that you have tried this? To confirm the port 1 [ the spare grey one ] is working put the 1TB drive into this and try booting up. ===================== So - with the two hard drives in [ and no DVD ] the new drive is recognised ? Have you tried the DVD with its own cable in the other ports [ 1 and 3 ] ? Is it recognised? ==================== It would help if you could let me know the make and model number of your motherboard [ should be in big letters on the surface somewhere ]

From my last post: What you have posted GRANDAD2 is from post #8 from my link :) ps GRANDAD2 - Why create a new account when your old one is still active ? EDIT: I discovered that your old account had been altered - your status was " Awaiting email Confirmation" ....which meant that you could not post. I have altered this back to "Registered User" Try the account again - hopefully you will be able to use this now.

Hi Sorry for the slow response. :( Are you still needing advice on this or have you managed to install Unity ? I don't have Unity but I too have read that Flash has had security issues in the past [ not sure if these have been resolved ]

Hi Roy I don't have good news I am afraid. Not being a printer specialist I reverted to Google ... The moderator on this site suggested that the print-head had expired. click here I hope this helps to explain. [ I didn't read the whole thread - possibly somebody else had more positive advice :) ] EDIT: Post #8 from the link explains how the poster solved his problem :)

Dell Dimension 9200 changing hard drive
KenB replied to joy's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
Hi Joy and welcome to ExTS Couple of questions. 1. Do you intend trying to use the old hard-drive with the old version of Windows still installed? 2. Is the new motherboard exactly the same model as the one that died? 3. Which operating system is on the hard-drive that you wish to install [ assuming that you are not re-installing the OS ] 4. Do you have a Windows Installation Disk for the OS that you wish to install ? OK - I know I exceeded my "couple of questions" limit :) -
Are you still having problems George ? Yellow exclamation marks next to the highlighted items in Device Manager indicates driver problems.

[Solved] Understanding Processors - help please....

Glad that the explanation was of some use. :) You should do - yes. With some software you may not notice a significant difference. If you are buying a new machine just to run the scanner software this may not be the best reason for a considerable outlay. If you do any graphics intensive work then an i5 CPU [ plus a decent Video Card ] would show a significant difference from what you have now. Happy computing :) -
[Solved] Understanding Processors - help please....
KenB replied to joddle's topic in Tech Support & Discussions Forum
The specs suggest Win7 minimum - I assume that you have this too ? i3 CPUs support DDR3 RAM. Lesser spec RAM will run slower. I think I can explain why i3 CPU has been specified. Although your CPU specifies 3.3 GHz an i3 at 2.4 GHz may well be faster. Let me try to explain. 3.3 GHz is actually the clock speed. The Clock Speed is the number of cycles [ calculations] made in a second. The CPUs do not carry out the same number of calculations in a cycle. The i3 will perform more. Imagine I had a spade and was digging a hole and I was removing a spadeful of earth each second. If you had a much bigger spade and you were removing 1 spadeful per second ..... In a given time you would have removed far more earth - even though our "Clock Speeds" were the same. Although the i3 Clock Speed is slower it actually gets more done in the same time period. This is very much simplified but I think it explains :) -

Hi, Software relies on more than just the CPU to run properly. Can I ask how much RAM you have in your machine ? Can you provide a link to the scanner - in particular the software ? -
Hi, I know we all do this out of frustration - but it is not recommended as it can damage the system. This is probably the result of "just switching off" Switch on and tap F8 constantly about once per second From the Advanced Startup Options select "Last Known Good Configuration" Let it boot up from this. Let me know if there is any change.
