This is an antique system, but it's the one I prefer using, so I hope it's so old that everyone knows how to solve problems in it. Modified hp Pavilion 325c HDD; almost all other hardware changed years ago WinXPH-SP3, auto updates Spybot auto updates auto scans scheduled Avast auto updates auto scans scheduled CCleaner auto I rarely boot the machine, but last night it seemed slower than normal, so before bed, I booted. I barely noticed the pending update symbol on the shutdown menu, and just hit restart before immediately turning the monitor off. I had just been browsing forums like this as usual (no other installs in the past few days, or any ****/gaming/P2P sites), so I can't think of anything I did that would have caused a problem. This morning, I found a blank desktop with a warning window saying the procedure entry point ReleaseSRWLockExclusive could not be located in KERNEL32.dll . Clicking OK (the only option) brought an almost-identical warning, this time about ObjectStublessClient29 in ole32.dll . Clicking OK there causes the system to reboot. My BIOS appears normal. LastKnownGoodConfiguration produces exactly the same results. SafeMode does too. I can get into the repair console using a W2KP install disk, but I don't really know what to do once I'm there. Being familiar with the VERY early versions of DOS, I'm surprised the reported file sizes for C:io.sys, msdos.sys, and several other critical system files is reported as 0, and the TYPE command says they can't be opened, but IDK if that's a significant part of this problem. I never had an XP install disk for this machine since it was a used/return/clearance at my local Sam's Club. I've also found C:windowssystem32kernel32.dll and ole32.dll, and their reported filesizes are ~1M each. Kernel's date is '09, and ole's is '11, so they don't appear to have been replaced recently. There are several hidden subdirectories of C:recycler including nprotect (Isn't that a Norton folder? He's uninstalled.) containing a lot of .DLL files, but their names have been changed to numbers so I can't easily see if any of them is a previous version of the indicated files. I have to assume the Windows auto update caused this, but can you confirm it before I go thru the hassle of fighting MS over it? Is there an easier fix? I have a WinXPP-SP3 system, but it has been even slower over the past year or so, and I only use it for e-mail background music. Currently, I'm on a Vaio PCV-RS710G running WinXPH-SP3 (similar to the problem machine). It was bought new full-retail and hasn't been modded, but I can't remember if I have install disks for it. running Vista. Running Microsoft Security Essentials When I click on Windows Defender A 'box' appears stating Defender is Off. I click on the Turn on Defender then it takes ages before anything happens. Then Windows Essentials states you have not run a scan for 253 days. I start the scan but it stops after approx. 2 mins. We had that screen lock our computer so we shut it off immediately, when re rebooted it it was gone and MSE showed it quarinteed. How can I be sure that it didn't get into any files? How can I check for it and how to remove it? Please help!!!!! Barb View this thread

Hello, Windows updates continues to download and install this update succesfully" for the past three months. My update history shows this has been installed at least 20 times already yet windows update continues to download and install this update. I keep getting prompted that Windows needs to install updates. I restart and update and I get the following messages: "Configuring Windows Update" which gets to 100% "Failure configuring Windows Updates Reverting changes..." (it does this twice) So I uninstalled my Trend Micro Titanium virus program and turned on Windows Defender and tried again, the results were exactly the same. I ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter, it reported the following: Detecting problems... On Dec. 1, I got a message that I needed to pay for Microsoft Security Essentials. I paid $107 to an outfit at dndsecure.com that, in the message, identified themselves as Microsoft Security Essentials. Now, I know it was bogus. But, I have been infected and I don't know what is a good program and what isn't. I have a listing of a program that is Creative Drivers that keeps showing up. When I try Miscrosoft Fix it Center, it keeps saying some SB devices are not my default. I don't know if these are infections since I do get audio. I think the title is Creative SB Audiology. I am running scans but nothing is getting picked up. I have ads now on FB. I have had different error messages, the msot recent is 0X80508023. When I run a search for the word creative, I get about 100 files that are read only and I cannot remove. Any help? Thank you. I don't know where product key is and I keep getting Ox80070424 error code about no network connection, however, I am connected to the internet. I can't get updates for security or for Windows. I am trying to install four updates with the codes: KB2751352 KB976002 KB2769034 KB2538243 These are all listed as important updates. Other updates work but these fail every time; the error codes that I get are: Code 80073701 Code 802400D Code 643 I am using Windows 8 (x64). I have tried installing each update individually as well as running the troubleshooter, downloading the updates online as well as running the computer in safe mode but nothing has worked. At the checking for hardware screen my machine just keeps ckecking for updates. I have let it run for 30 min to see what happens. I don't recieve any error codes. I just get upset and cancel it out. It seems that the problem occured after I installed Office 2003 pro and downloaded the service pack 3 but I'm not sure. I have restored to a pre installation condition but to no avail.
