  1. I WAS HAVING INSTALLATION ERRORS CONSTANTLY..SO I DID A FACTORY RESTORE AND THOUGHT EVERYTHING WAS GOING FINE. sp1 SHOWS SUCCESSFUL...THEN SHOWS NEEDS UPDATE AGAIN AND SP2 WILL NOT UPDATE UNTIL SP1 IS INSTALLED. I EVEN DID THE HOTFIX 947821 FOR INSTALLATION ERRORS. I RESTART AFTER EVERY INSTALLATION, STILL SHOWS NEEDS AGAIN. EVEN MANUAL INSTALLATION IS NOT WORKING. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP! 2/25 I tried manual installation again...restarted several times, so I thought it was working. Does not show in Installed updates. each time before it showed successful...I thought purhaps I could uninstall and start fresh...but again...does not show in installed updates. Could it be that the individual components are installed and SP2 does not recognize these as SP1 and therefore will not install as sp2? Should I do another system restore and not let it do auto update.. .just try manual SP1 and SP2 as well as the hotfix items? I want a nice clean system before I add RAM and upgrade to Windows 8. 2. I've been having a problem using the media server capability of Windows Media Player since upgrading to Windows 8. I did not have this problem when this same machine was on Windows 7. When I try to access this computer's (let's call this Comp A for clarity) libraries using ANOTHER machine's WMP, I get the error "The remote media library did not allow the connection. Please contact the device manufacturer for more information." However, I can see Comp A's shared folders and access those files since it shows up under the Homegroup in the file explorer. The strange thing is that Comp A can stream media libraries from the other computers on my network without a problem. I just can't remotely stream the libraries that are on Comp A to any other machine (running Windows 8, 7, or a PS3 which also didn't have issues when Comp A was running Windows 7). My network setup is one main router (Linksys EA2700) hooked to a cable modem that is connected to ports throughout the house. Comp A is hardwired to the main router. The other mach9ines are hooked up to a SECOND EA2700 that is cascaed from the main router. They are connected either wired or wirelessly to the second router, not the main router that Comp A is on. I just bought the new EA2700 routers because I thought my previous really old routers were somehow causing these problems, even though there wasn't an issue with media library streaming using the old router setup when Comp A was running Windows 7. The new routers did not fix this issue as I was hoping they would. Prior to switching out my routers, I also did a clean reinstall of Windows 8 and the problem persisted. Again, I did not have this problem streaming my media libraries FROM Comp A when Windows 7 (and Vista!) were installed on it. I'm out of ideas so if anyone can help me out, I'd really appreciate it!!! View the full article

  4. I installed Windows 8 Pro and Windows Media Center on a new Crucial V4 SSD last November and now find the drive has problems with the disk activity stuck at 100%. It looks like the only remedy is to upgrade the firmware from v22 to v25 which Crucial have just released and appears to solve the problem. The problem with this is that it will wipe the SSD, so I will have to reinstall Windows 8 Pro upgrade (After installing Windows7) and then the Windows Media Center which I think is in Added Services. Can anyone confirm this is what I will have to do:- Load Windows 7 using the Product I have for the Package Start the upgrade wizard and go through the upgrade procedure using the Product Key I received when I purchased the upgrade. Search for Added Features in Settings to add the Media Center clicking on the "Have Product Key" option and entering the product key when requested. I also have subscribed to Windows 365 am I right in thinking if I click on install it will see I still just have 2 installations (My desktop and this laptop that I am reinstalling it on). I am quite nervous in doing the firmware upgrade and just want to make sure I have all the steps I need to go through before I get started. View the full article
  5. Someone answered my first query but I can't find the answer on this site and unfortunately lost the response. The MS kb says by using Method 1, the file powercfg.exe gets copied from the Default User profile to the current user profile. I assume that Default User profile refers to C:Documents & SettingsDefault User folder. I searched and the file doesn't exist in any Default User folder. Copies of the file do exist in these root directory folders: Windowssystem32 and WindowsServicePackFilesi386 and WindowsSoftwareDistributionDowload(followed by a very long string of alpha/numeric characters. I'd like to copy powercfg.exe from one of these folders and paste it in the relevant Default User folder then try the MS kb method 1 again. Can anyone identify the mystery folder that should contain the file within the Default User folder? View this thread
  6. So my computer is 64 bit compatible, and I have a windows 7 32 and 64 bit ultimate .iso installation file that is downloaded on my laptop. (this is a legal copy I bought through my university) I burnt it onto a CD and installed it to my PC. However, it installed the 32 bit, not the 63. How do I install the 64 bit version? Thank you. 11. With office 2010 and office 2013 you can pass a configuration file to the setup.exe to instruct the installer not to install certain office components. for example to remove the Access component you would specify a line like this in the config file it seems like there is no way to do this with Office 365 click to run products, we don't want all of our users to gain access to all of the components within office because we have big problems with users incorrectly creating Access databases and Publisher files and InfoPath files, these types of files we consider as being for more advanced users who know what they are doing with those products. how can we block access to using Access, Publisher and InfoPath from the click to run products - most preferably without having to deploy applocker policies, or is this the only way to do it? thanks Steve View this thread

  13. I had a creeping hard drive crash last week and I noticed that many, many files are broken due to defect sectors. Unfortunately all those corrupt files have been copied in my files history, which is now (partly) corrupted, too. I have a very old backup that could be used to recover only the broken files, because most of the data has been updated meanwhile. Unfortunately it's not only few files I could check by hand. That is why I am looking for a solution that checks if files may possibly be corrupt. I don't know if files on NTFS store a hash within to quickly see if it is corrupt, I seriously hope so. Or maybe there is another possibility? I also noticed that parts of the corrupted files are filled with null, where once was data (resulting in JPEGs that can be displayed, but are partly broken in its display). Maybe you know of a program that checks if a file has a lot of zeros inside? @Microsoft staff: Please … never mark a reply as answered, if does not absolulety apply or if it is just useless troubleshooting gibberish. (I say that for a reason, because you regularly mark absolutely useless replies as answers. Sometimes a problem is hard to solve, or not ata ll, and therefor stays without answer. That is sad for everyone, but *you* must accept that fact! View the full article
  14. I have tried to get any screensaver to work in windows 8 and don't know what the problem is. I select any one of them, preview them, set time and turn each on but none of them respond and screen just goes blank when screensaver should kick in. I am using IE 10. I have tried all maintenance troubleshooting options but nothing comes up. Has anyone had this problem and know what is causing the problem and know how I can get this feature working properly again? waynel View the full article

  17. I am not sure where to report this but I believe I have found a bug in the latest Office 365 product. I set up a machine running windows 7, and implemented Office 2010 and Office 2013 group policies, I scoped the policies to the correct user and machine. the particular policy I am interested in is the "default file format" found in the GPO under the save option for word, excel and powerpoint. under office 2010 this policy applies correctly and does not display the "choose a file format" dialog box when those programs start, this is the behaviour I am looking for. I then installed Office 2013 and implemented the exact same group policy, the default file format dialog box does not appear. however, when I install Office 365 (2013 edition) the dialog box does display. it appears that some other policies do apply correctly to the office 365 product but the default files format policy does not, office 365 is ignoring this policy setting.... hence why I believe this is a bug. according to the Microsoft technical literature the Office 365 product and Office 2013 share the same group policy settings, I can not find any admx files specifically for office 365, only for office 2013 so 365 should recognise and use this policy setting.
