Hi, It seems that both just crash to the desktop right after the big icon flashes through the screen. I've been googling this for quite a bit now. I tried using SFC command but no anomalies found. I tried using safeboot but that didnt help either. My only remaining guess is to reinstall (I cant even Refresh PC) or repair-install to get this fixed. Any suggestions before I do so? Thanks! When I install programs and they create an icon on my desktop it gets created on all other users of the machine too. How can I delete the icons from the other users and keep it on my desktop? Speech recognition used to work fine, now it doesn't. I'm running Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit---I went through all the tutorials and then some, so my computer hears me and knows my voice and the microphone (headset) is compatible; But when I finished the voice training, speech recognition went to open, then a pop up occurred and said the languages weren't the same.....I checked and from control panel and in advanced for speech, they are both set for English, US! I have XP w/ sp2 & sp3, NIS, running as administrator. No automatic updates even though the updates is turned on. When trying to update manually, it goes through the checking for validity then shows the express or custom options. I usually check the custom option which then checks for available updates. After awhile the list comes up showing NO updates available. The history shows only Powerpoint/Office updates having been done and four other updates that failed. My wife's computor works just fine, mine does not. I haven't had an update for windows, etc since last year. And this February 2013 update does not show at all. What can I do to turn this around? Hello, I just did a change on an older computer from spanish to english via the use of an XP reinstallation disc. The disc is from my old er dell dimension 2400, the computer that recieved the change was a compaq presario 5000 series. All seem to go well but now I can't use IE6 which is on the computer now. I tried msn exp as well but both crash after a minute or so after connecting to the internet. I tried to upgrade to IE8 but get an iesetup.exe entry point not found.SHRegGetvaluew could not be found in the dll. SHLWAPI.dll. I tried to turn on automatic update but it does not seem to work. I also tried to download 3.1 3.5 net framework then sp2 but I have had no luck. The compaq does not have a floppy drive but has a dvd burner and a regular rom.I have tried to donwload sp2 on another computer and burned a copy but the compaq want sp2 installed before I can install from my disc. I have been using windows 8 for a couple of months without issue, my screensaver is set to turn on after 5 minutes of inactivity. I recently bought the microsoft comfort 5000 keyboard/mouse combo, and after installing it, my screensaver no longer will start which is a security issue. Recently I upgraded my MS Office Pro 2010 version to the current MS Office Pro 2013 using my companies HUP (Home Use Program). The HUP install package is not intellegent enough to detect and remove previous versions of the product suite, and so it left the 2010 version on my system. (In fact, 2010 was an upgrade of my retail version of 2007, acquired through my business HUP program). When I attempt to perform the uninstall process from the Control Panel; the message issued reads as follows: Error 1316. Setup cannot read from file C:WindowsInstallerProPlusrWW.msi. Check your connection to the network, or CD-ROM drive. For other potential solutions to this problem, see C:UsersAppDataLocalTempSetup00000a60SETUP.CHM. Setup failed. Rolling back changes... From a HUP installation, there is no disk; only net download. In response to the statement "...to the network,..." I have a valid and working connection to the internet; though I am certain this is not what it means. As a HUP installation, there is no CD-ROM disk present (for either current upgrade or previous upgrade). There is only a disk with my retail 2007 version of the MS Office Pro suite of products. If the power button is pressed. it will go to the "Shutting Down..." screen but never shut down. If the Settings charm option is clicked, it will simply do nothing. Heck, I can do "shutdown /s /f /t 00" and still, nothing happens. Help! View the full article

i have a pc with win 8 installed on the primary drive. i purchased a win 7 pro os to install on a second drive. ( i bought a new pc after my old win xp got a little fuzzy) i formatted the second hd as a gpt drive in win 8, and when i go into bios and make set boot from cd drive as first, even disconnecting primary drive, win 7 will come up, i hit a key, it says it is installing files, the four colors swirl around and stop, and there it sits, and will go no further. what setings in bios need changed? it is an acer mother board with amd a6 5400 dual core with 16 gig of ram. can anyone help?ken View the thread

Got a Dell laptop way back in '07 or so for college loaded with Vista Ultimate. A few years later (I believe it was Dec-Jan of '09-'10) I decided to take advantage of a student discount on Windows 7 and upgraded. Hard-drive crashed a few months ago and I just got a replacement drive. Installed Vista Ultimate from the backup disc and I was wondering if there's any way to upgrade back to 7?
