Trying to connect my ASUS Netbook, running Win XP, to the Internet via COMCAST, through a MOTOROLA SBG 901 wireless modem. Everything works fine for the iPad2 I'm typing this on and my other laptop. When I click on my network name, it asks for the network password, or WPA. The tag on the bottom of my modem lists an SSID, a WPA-PSK, pass code, HFC MAC ID, Gateway Mgmt MAC ID. The tech supt at Mororola told me I should use the WPA that's 20 char long. XP then tells me that it should be 5 or13 char long. None of the numbers on the bottom of the modem are 5 or 13 char long. I've also tried the pass code, to no avail. The modem sees the Netbook and the Netbook sees the modem, if fact it says we're connected to the network, but we can't go anywhere. I have a SQL based maintenance management system that has entry points to various modules like equipment lists and inventory lists. We use BMP files for the icons that users can click on to navigate to the various menus. They display perfectly in all versions of Windows until Windows8 came out. I can temporarily see them by going into Control Panel, selecting Personalization, changing from the Windows default themes of "Windows" to High Contrast #1, then back to "Windows". My navigation buttons appear as the normally do. If I log out of my application and log back in, those navigation buttons are hidden again. They are there since I can click on the spot that any of the buttons should appear, and it does send me to the correct screen. Any ideas?? View the full article

I work in IT at a large university. I ordered a Dell XPS14 laptop for a person in my unit. I ordered it with Win 7 pro installed, but I just took it out of the box and it has Win 8 Pro installed. Win 7 Enterprise (vol. licensed) is our standard desktop config, so I want to downgrade. I believe this is allowable with the volume licensing -- activation should be through our local kms server. My question is with the UEFI. I turned security OFF, but now I'm not sure about the installation. Do I need to reconfigure things back to CMOS, or can I still use UEFI and the current HD setup, or do I need to reformat the drive? View the full article

I already understant that windows 8 can't restore an backup from windows xp, but i tried restore the archive from another computer with XP and give me a message " no data entries". I've recently built a new system and installed Windows 8 on it but have been having random system restarts. I'm getting BSODs caused by different drivers, usually it's 'ntoskrnl.exe' but have also had 'Wdf01000.sys' and 'bridge.sys'. I've attached a screenshot of BlueScreenView below. So far I've tried a few different routes of troubleshooting and everything is coming up clean. -ran Memtest overnight with no errors -ran sfc/scannow which came back clean -currently running Prime 95 on CPU for the last 3 hours with no errors so far I've attached a link to the last 7 minidump files generated by the system. I was hoping that someone could take a look at these and see if they will shed some light on the problem. I have just performed a clean install of Win 8 Pro Upgrade. When this had finished and I had got my Win Live Mail working, I started to create a storage pool. I have 3 hard drives of varying sizes, C:, D:, and E: and a USB connected Iomega drive as F:. C; had the new installation of Win 8. D: and E: were empty but formatted and showing OK in Disk Manager and E; contained 25 years of data. When it asked me to select the disks to be in the Storage Pool, I selected D: and E:. When it had completed, I was aghast to find that it had lost the original E: drive and had used the F: drive, now labelled E: drive, as the second drive in the storage pool, wiping 25 years of data. Disk Manager can no longer see the original E: drive. But it is listed in the Disk Drives section in Device Manager. If you try to populate the Volumes information, I get the following error message: "Volume information for this disk cannot be found". 1: Is there any way I can recover the data on the Iomega disk? 2: How can I tell is the storage pool has been created and which disks are used? 3: How do I get the old E: drive back on line? I am tring to use aLinksys AE2500 USB flash drive for the 1st time, it says it doesn't have a driver. It is a direct plug-in with no cable or disc. I have a hp dv5000 I upgraded to windows 7,worked pretty good for a mnute...Then had jumping mouse problems which was an update issue that fixed it.Then screen when shutting down went blue & boot manager missing came up & it wouldnt shut down,just restart...fixed that,now it at start up goes to boot manager & ask me do I want previous windows or windows 7 to start? Hello, I need help in changing my wireless internet password please. I am not very computer saavy, so I will appreciate simple instructions please. I have a regular computer that I don't have access to,(husbands) , my laptop, a wireless router, a printer, a modem? from cable company, stepson has tablet & PS3. The problem is my stepson is autistic and not mentally mature enough to be on the internet and he knows the password. How can I change the password to the wireless internet ? Windows update keeps asking to update the same Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (KB936330) over and over again. I have tried Microsoft Fix It and the Micorsoft Super Scan to see if my laptop is infected with a virus and everything seems to be ok. No virus, no maleware, no problems. Nothing seems to stop the update icon from appearing on the bottom toolbar of my screen every 2 minutes. What can I do to stop this from happening?It's like this update isn't being recognized. What's up with that? My laptop is a Windows HP Vista, 2007. I do not have the funds to go out to purchase a brand new 2013 model, please help, much appreciated & many thanks. View this thread
