  1. What Antiviruses are you running, and under system properties (click Start and select Control Panel. From the Control Panel, double-click the System icon) towards the bottom of the window under computer what does it say is the mHz of the CPU?
  2. Their is absolutely no point in running 8Gb of RAM at the moment, find me software that can use it and I will change my opinion, 4Gb would seem to be the optimum amount, you get a noticeable performance over just 2G or 1G, anymore than that and the performance increase is negligent if any. hope that helps you decide ;)
  3. you have to phone Microsoft and explain what happened ;) activation will fail and it will give you a big 64 digit alphanumeric code and ask you to phone a number for Microsoft support. and depending on what you say depends on if they will give you a new Key or tell you to buy a new OEM OS. but for £300 I think you are being a little ambitious, given that the ideal amount of RAM you will need to get the best performance will be 4G Scan.co.uk: BX80605I5750 - Intel Core i5 750, S 1156, Lynnfield, Quad Core, 2.66GHz, DMI 2.5 GT/s, 8MB Cache, 95W, Retail Scan.co.uk: Asus P7P55 LX, Intel P55 Express, S1156, PCI-E 2.0 (x16), DDR3 2200(OC), SATA 3Gb/s, SATA RAID, ATX Scan.co.uk: W1800UX2GP - 2GB (2x1GB) SuperTalent TwinPack DDR3 PC3-14400 (1800MHz) 240 Pin, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 7-7-7-21. so I think you may want to ether look at lowering you spec's to a quad core with DDR2 which would be more realistic with that budget. or preferably save a little longer and Ideally what you are asking for is an i7 system, which you will need about another £150 for.
  4. Your quite right Fat file system only supports file sizes upto 4G, here is a link that explains what you need to do to convert it to NTFS How to convert a FAT16 volume or a FAT32 volume to an NTFS file system in Windows XP here is another that explains how to create a partition How to use Disk Management to configure basic disks in Windows XP as a precaution I would back up any data you have on the drive somewhere, just incase anything goes wrong or you have any problems please feel free to post any questions you may have about these links ;)
  5. I think that you best option would be to convince your Mom that she has no reason to be paranoid, and that you are mature enough to use the internet safely and sensibly. and if you don't know how to do that you need to ask yourself if your Mom is being paranoid or just trying to protect you from information and knowledge that you are not yet old enough to understand.
  6. TBH I have just also installed Kubunto, a linux based OS, this mainly because of the fact that Google is developing a Linux based OS, and with the increasing popularity of Linux, and the growing availability of applications, I can see in the near futur Linux becoming a serious contender to Windows, especially with the current cost of windows compared to linux. Unfortunately though as I say I have just installed it and basically not really spent more than a couple of hours playing with it, so can't really say as yet if I think it will replace windows on my system just yet.
  7. me too ;)http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/../images/smilies/wink.gif
  8. not many with any knowledge on the subject, AVG Free is great for telling you that you have an infection and that you will need the payed AVG to remove it. Personally I would go with one suggested by Tootech as they prevent infection, and remove them without having to upgrade, and they are hardly noticable on your PC's resources while they are working
  9. well that's not good, the case's air flow was designed to work and keep the components cool, by blocking or obstructing one of the air vents it could well be causing your problems. judging by the positioning of the side air vent I would say that it's their to supply the CPU and graphics card with a cool clean air flow depending on if you have a fan fitted as an exhaust (out) or as an intake. with the positioning of the other fans I would have it set as an intake to blow straight onto the cpu. ok according to that you should have had 2 fans supplied and the other three are optional, have you checked that the two 3 speed fans are on full, and did you buy and fit any of the optional fans. judging by the positioning of the side air vent I would say that it's their to supply the CPU and graphics card with a cool clean air flow depending on if you have a fan fitted as an exhaust (out) or as an intake.
  10. What case is it in, what fans and size, and where they are, is all the cabling tied up neatly and out the way. as to the rattling noise can you try and narrow down to which area of the pc case its coming from?
  11. what's it say in device manager? until you know what the card is then you won't be able to get the right drivers. if device manager is no use try downloading this and installing it, the see what it says your GPU is.
  12. ok try this, don't know if it will monitor the GPU though  Intel® Active Monitor Download link if you can't find it is ;) Software License Agreement
  13. looking at the pictures it looks like there are two screws holding the top cover on, once removed that should allow you to remove the fan. but not ever having one or taking one apart I can't be sure about that, so its a proceed at your own risk on that But first if you tell us what Motherboard you are using you may be able to get a utility to check on the fan speed, and if your lucky it may be able to give you temps as well but thats all dependant on compatability
  14. are all the fans working? have you cleaned the inside from dust? is the PC placed so that it has a cool air supply? (away from radiators)
  15. If I understand you right this will help, Maybe? Remove ATI Catalyst Control Center from the Desktop Right-Click Menu :: the How-To Geek
  16. Hmm could be Memory error, or CPU, but if you look here at your specific Bios then you will know more BiosCentral - Award BIOS Beep Codes
  17. Hi Can you give us a little more info please you say that you had your first Virus last week, how did you remove it? what Antivirus software are you using? what Fire wall are you using? what anti spyware are you using?
  18. I think that if you have succeeded in getting Win 7 working then you won't look back and start thinking that this should have been Vista? but here is a link to the Toshiba support page, if you phone them and explain your woe's about there upgrade they just might be nice and offer you some help, Laptop Support homepage - Toshiba especially if they think your in a position to recommend what type of PC's replace the current 9 you look after when they reach the end of their practical life ;)
  19. OK from a little research I found out you should have two disks? At first you must put components disc and your system will be scanned and you will get list of all drivers, tools and utilities that must be removed before upgrade starts. Let it do that automatically. When finished you will see message to put upgrade disc and upgrade should start automatically. to be honest I'm not Impressed, I don't see why they haven't given you one windows Disk that gives the option to Upgrade or do a clean Install but they do recommend that you do the upgrade from a clean install of Vista can you have a look here and tell us which one applies to you, and if those are the instructions you followed with your disks thanks Windows 7 upgrade: Step-by-step Upgrade Guide
  20. why explain when it is already done for me Information for Hewlett Packard, HP Pavillion, Compaq, Philips and Dell Slimline Low Profile Half Height Graphics Cards(INFO) buy at PCUpgrade.co.uk just for reference your Machine is Product Specifications HP Pavilion Slimline s3040.uk Desktop PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English) what you need to really do is talk to the people where you are planning on buying the card from or look in the data sheet to the card to find if it is suitable for low profile or slimline cases.
  21. the key to graphics cards is the version of directx it can run. Geforce 7300LE 128MB DDR PCI Express Video Card with DVI, VGA, HDTV, TV-Out, DirectX 9.0, OpenGL 2.0: 3DFR7300LEE (Retail, Powered by nVidia) (Discontinued) The ATI Radeon HD 4850 GPU GDDR3 memory 256-bit memory interface DirectX 10.1 24x so then the next question is what Directx support your software requires? if its 9 or above your current card should run it ok, if its 9.1 or above then your current card is going to struggle. the other consideration is the amount or onboard RAM the more RAM the card had the less System RAM its going to borrow to run.
  22. OK I am completely lost as to why you un installed the existing drivers. read this Upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7 (custom installation) - Help & How-to - Microsoft Windows basically all you should need to do is backup your files and put in the disk and then simply follow the instructions and to install it to your C drive, which as far as I am aware is disk 0 partition 1 or 0 which should be a ntfs file format. so do you have Vista Recovery disks, or partition. (some way to put vista back on from a clean install, so you can then try and upgrade it to win 7) and have you backed up all your files and important info?
  23. Hello, I believe we have met somewhere else lol, I suspect heat but will leave the tech's here to suggest more, as they may have a different idea's ;)
  24. first things first you are going to have to look inside and make sure that RAM, GPU, and all the cables are seated and connected properly. Desk top Computers do not take being shaken around very well, it will also help if you can tell us the make and model as we will be able how to better advise you, and be able to point you to exactly where you need to look to check components and cables. trying to re install until this is done would just be a waste of time. and would defiantly result in all data on the Hard drive being lost.
