  1. New Threads are easy, the staff here are slow ;) lol sorry staff here is where you will find the info on how to use the forum boards ;) Computer Support Forums - FreePCHelp.co.uk - FAQ: General Forum Usage easy when you know how, but its knowing how in the first place that makes it easy ;)
  2. Hi Wiggywoos Ideally you should have started yourself a new thread but never mind will give the staff something to do ;) This sounds like the hard drive has died, and will need to be replaced, so you will ether have to pay, find the receipt or warranty, or pay somewhere to fix it if you don't want to attempt to do it yourself. if you did actually get it from a reputable high street chain store there is a good chance that if you phone there customer support they will be able to tell you if its still under warranty but as I just had a quick google to see whats involved in changing the HDD yourself I found this "No bootable devices insert a boot disk and press any key" Error Message on Boot TRY IT FIRST!!!
  3. Hi just a thought but did you let windows install the device through the windows installation wizard? If so uninstall it, then reboot the PC, when the installation wizard opens cancel it, and manually open the installation file. should be in the folder under setup.exe or similar. hope this helps but to be honest I have never used Win 2000
  4. Personally having the option and by the sounds of things I would Back up all his files on the D Drive, then format and re install the OS, once that is done I would then ether use Avast or other reputable AV to scan the D drive, or better use an online scanner like eset.
  5. you never answered this question, if you just used the Microsoft Uninstall programs feature of windows then their is a high possibility that some files and registry entries were not completely removed !!! I'd advise you to do this anyway, as AVG 9 free edition will quite often allow your system to get infected then will not be able to remove the infection and suggest you upgrade to the paid version. where as if you use something like Avast or Avira it will prevent the infection, and remove any you may already have.
  6. Hi some where in the Bios there is a setting for when the keyboard starts working, so you will have to Boot and enter the Bios and change this setting then reboot again and your keyboard will be working
  7. It looks like your in luck, fingers crossed and that you should have a restore to factory setting option :) if you follow the following steps then this should solve all your problems in one go. their is a chance you don't have a recovery partition however as you have owned the PC from new and haven't said you lost the disks that came with it, then I'm inclined to think that you do have the recovery partition, ether way get back to us on how you get on.
  8. First of can you tell us the Model, and can you find the service tag number, once we know what Dell machine it is we will be able to tell you where the service tag is. also we will be able to find out if it has a recovery partition. but just in case it does not have a recovery partition can you have a look in the device manager Click Start, click Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager. and tell us anything that has a yellow triangle by it. also it might be useful to know if you have had the machine from new or bought it second hand (used/graded)
  9. Did you Un install AVG first AVG Antivirus and Security Software - Tools download if not then try removing AVG completely first as running two Antivirus applications quite often causes conflicts that prevent them working properly.
  10. I would just like to add to RandyL, and say that any reputable forum will take the same approach and hit you with a similar rule, your best option would be to take it to a Computer Repair shop where you are able to verify your ownership
  11. Taken from the Avast User Manual Basically it should not require a scan but should stop any Virus before it infects your system ;) however it's always a wise move to scan every now and again just to be on the safe side if you would like to read the manual you can get it from here avast! User Guides and Manuals
  12. Nope AVG Free is not good at all I would go for Avast or Avira, why have a second rate Antivirus when you can have a free version of what are recognised to be the best free Antivirus Applications available?
  13. Hi I'm no expert in hardware, but I've had a quick look round and if im right your machine specs are :- Dell Dimension 8300 Review Specs in Desktops Reviews at ZDNet.co.uk which would mean with a socket 478 your available choice of cpu's is going to be limited, and yet for the price of the cheapest 478 CPU that I can find you can replace the Motherboard and CPU, but that would also mean throwing the old SDRAM and would mean buying new DDRII which just happens to be quite cheap at the moment But first off we need to confirm your machine if you can find the service tag number the techs here will be able to advise you better or if you go here you should be able to find the info and post it for us Dell System Information / Dell Warranty Extensions & Upgrades / Dell Warranty Status
  14. their are two possibilities that I can think of 1 you have a malware problem (Adware) 2 the site you are looking at aren't considered to be 'Safe' if you are getting this when you are using sites like this one, google, banking sites, shopping sites then I would say option 1 if you are getting this when just generally surfing and looking at pictures and video's shall we say then I would suggest option 2 if you want to be certain and make sure I suggest you start a thread in the malware forum ;)
  15. moving programs off the C drive would confuse things, and probably cause more problems than it would solve but what I would do is ether get a new bigger internal HD drive £50ish sholuld buy you around 500G and use your external for backing up, or move your documents folder off C onto the external drive ;) and there is always the option of going through all the installed programs and removing (un-installing) the ones you don't use when you make your mind up what's best for you if you need any help in 'how to' just ask ;)
  16. Hi ticked off like the name just do us a favour and check a few settings please ;) click tools at the top, and select options, then the privacy tab, you should have something like the image below and the settings should be the same ;) http://i709.photobucket.com/albums/ww93/Match2768/CHF%20teck%20pictures/Firefoxsettings.png
  17. Hi and welcome I'm sure someone will help you soon ;) but you should have posted your problem here Malware Infection Removal - Computer Support Forums - FreePCHelp.co.uk not to worry I'm sure one of the staff will be along to move it for you. ;)
  18. Hi first off how about a clue to what we are dealing with, so can you tell us what spec the PC is or Manufacturer and Model would help second does it post (Power on self test) should give one 'Beep' if all is well, if you get more than one 'Beep' or a repeting series of beeps can you tell us what they are. or even if it gets that far thanks.
  19. On the subject there also is the Snap Feature, To use Snap, drag the title bar of an open window to either side of the desktop to align it there, or drag it to the top of the desktop to maximize the window. To expand a window vertically using Snap, drag the top edge of the window to the top of the desktop. For more information, search for "Snap" in Help and Support.
  20. Cool I too love Rock and Metal and will have to keep an eye out for them, never know we might bump into each other as I help my mates Band out with the PA and sound Mix ;) Don't like to Boast but we did do a gig at Saxon's lead singers pub, and I got a free pint or three out of him ;) Look forward to that venue :)
  21. Death is never an easy subject, even more so when it is close to you, but you have fond memories that no one can take from you, and all the people he touched through his life he will live on in.
  22. that's an Idea if they have a recyclable value, but they were obviously made, pressed for some one with more money than talent.
  23. just following along the same lines, I have in my possession around 500 black vinyl LP's, inherited from a house attick, I was just going to take them down the tip, but have also considered other uses, like plant pots and no they arn't worth selling and yes they are all exactly the same. any suggestions welcome ;) or anyone want to lend me an air rifle :)
  24. Hi stupo not sure how it's going to work as with IDE you set the jumpers, and with SATA it has to be set in the Bios, so I would have thought you would have to just enable it in the bios, if it don't do it automatically. and then it should just show up in windows as another drive.
  25. 2000 posts and not a fence in sight :D congratulations
