  1. The last time I saw something similar was when the CD/DVD drive had a fault. Perhaps it's having a problem detecting a drive such as the CD/DVD or a hard drive or a floppy drive. You could try disconnecting all drives except the hard drive with Windows installed to see what happens. It also might not hurt to run a memory or hard drive test.
  2. Yes that is the way it is supposed to be. What you do is select yes,Y, then restart your computer. At bootup it will start the check. Once started don't interrupt it. Let it run until it is done. See post 7 in this thread.
  3. I was afraid you might have to reinstall Windows. Keep in mind that the drive may have developed some bad sectors which Windows may have ignored on the re-installation. I'm hoping that is not the issue or things could go bad again. Keep backing up just in case. In the future as Nev was saying there are ways to save files from a corrupted drive sometimes.
  4. This may be because you made Firefox your default browser. OE links should open with IE if you make IE your default browser. It's worth a try. See the following link. Change your default web browser
  5. Try right clicking command prompt and choose Run as administrator.
  6. If this is an update problem maybe going back to an earlier date might help. In System Restore there is a button to show earlier restore points. It's easily overlooked. Keep in mind that any restore done in safemode cannot be undone.
  7. I don't have Vista anymore but I was wondering if Windows Mail is in Features. Control Panel>Programs and Features>Turn Windows features on or off. Personally I like Windows Live Mail.
  8. Considering that statement and the fact you have developed the exact same problem on 2 of your PC's I think it's possible you have malware.
  9. Thank you Synapse. You said it better than I did. Nice link too. As he said those are the standard ports so you might want to try those if your email network will support it. Thanks Synapse I appreciate the help as always my friend.
  10. Is the "other PC" connected to "your" Orange account? I'm having trouble following the details here. It is possible that Orange blocks port 10. Some ISP's block port 25 for instance. With no firewall turned on nothing else can block a port. I have heard of malicious software opening a port but never closing one. So that leaves the basics. 1. Settings are incorrect. Carefully go over ALL of them again noting the ones I listed. 2. Their network has a problem. Only they can help you with that. 3. Orange blocks port 10. Check with Orange or see if your email network has an alternate port that will work. Short of those 3 things I can think of absolutely nothing else that would cause this.
  11. Sorry about that astragirl. darksun was a spammer pedaling his wares. I have banned him and deleted all his posts. Glad you're all fixed up.
  12. OK. You've tried these settings on different computers with Outlook, Outlook Express and Windows Mail. I think that rules out a firewall or security blocking the port. This can only mean one of your settings is incorrect or it's being blocked from sending from their end. Unfortunately I can't personally verify that they have given you the correct settings as this is a private network as you noted. There are a couple things you can check though. Make sure port 10 is correct for SMTP and not something else like port 25. On the server tab under Outgoing Mail Server there is My Server Requires Authentication. Tic or untic per required settings. Click the Settings button there and make sure you are "Using the same settings as my incoming mail server". In Advanced under Server Port Settings-Outgoing Mail (SMTP) tic or untic as required "This server requires a secure connection (SSL). Notice there are two seperate settings areas for SMPT. Authentication and secure connection. They both have to be set according to your mail network. Like I said it's either their end or your settings are wrong. I can't check their network for the settings though.
  13. Welcome back mtav. Try this. Open Windows Mail. Click Tools>Options>Send. Untic "Save a copy of sent messages in the 'Sent Items' folder. Click Apply>OK. Close and open Windows Mail. No do the same thing but this time tic the box. Yes Windows Mail is bundled with Vista and not a seperate add-on program. Deleting an account can sometimes solve issues with that particular account but I think your issue is with the mail client itself and not your account. I noticed this thread was never finished. http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/malware-infection-removal/8540-disappearing-messages.html
  14. I can't seem to find anything on Alburia. Can you provide a link to that service please. For now I'm guessing this is a case of not having a paid subscription. Most email providers will not let you send mail through a client unless you are paying them. Yahoo mail in the USA is like that but you can use all the web based mail features. Setting up an Orange email account with Orange would work because you pay for it. However you still have to do it from a computer that is connected to the Orange ISP. If you have a paid account with Alburia you might need to do it from a computer or device that has the paid subscription. For instance I can receive mail through Outlook from my ISP even if I do it from a different computer that does not have internet access from my ISP. But I cannot send. For that I have to be connected to the internet through my ISP for my ISP provided mail to send.
  15. Who is the ISP for your email? That is, who do you pay for internet access? What version of Outlook are you using? You show you are running Windows 7. Windows 7 cannot run Outlook Express. So I'm confused as to how you managed to set up your account on Outlook Express running Windows 7.
  16. You'll need a power lead to each device for all to work. Do you only have the two sata leads coming from the PSU? It's not uncommon for that to be the case. If you need another sata power lead you might have to get an adaptor to convert a molex lead to sata.
  17. I was just wondering if this only happens with a disk in the drive bay. Just a thought.
  18. As Dalo said basic flash games on the net. But there are plenty of web based games you will not be able to play due to the onboard graphics and DirectX version supported.
  19. Hi everyone. Just to let you know the Vista Recovery Environment bootdisk download from Neosmart is a legit download. Using torrent software is unavoidable as there is no other download option for the file. I don't believe there is a problem here in this case. I think Nev may be right about the hard drive. In a previous thread I noticed that you had recently reinstalled Windows via the Acer E-Recovery. A year ago I believe. http://extremetechsupport.com/forum/windows-vista/10041-more-memory.html Although your RAM is extremely low a slow computer could also be a sign of a failing drive. As I said I'm inclined to go with Nev.
  20. Try using the Firefox (safemode). It might be a add-on that is causing the problem. If the Firefox (safemode) works ok then it's probably an add-on that is causing it. Look in Tools>add-ons. Probably in Extensions.
  21. Don't waste your time cliff. Although there are many different 5000 series all are ancient. I had one myself. Besides the outdated unsupported operating system there is not one piece of hardware worth upgrading. You would need a new processor, more RAM, bigger hard drive and a new operating system to start with. For a fraction of the cost you could buy a new unit that is many times better even after upgrading. You would have a hard time finding software that runs on ME anymore including an antivirus program.
  22. Since it makes wierd sounds first I'm guessing a bad drive instead of bad memory. Have a read here; Error Message:
  23. Contacts refer to Windows Mail in Vista or Windows Live Mail in Windows 7. Both are email clients like Outlook Express or Outlook which is part of Microsoft Office. Now if her friend is using web based mail instead of a email client that is totally different. I see that you said Outlook Express so it must be Windows XP or earlier. Is there any chance you can personally check it out? It could be several things including a virus so any information on the security would also be helpful.
  24. In all my years here I have never received such warm wishes on my birthday. I thank you one and all. This is indeed a great birthday. Neill when I was young and wild Wild Turkey got the better of me many a day. :) Gotta love those old birthdays.
