  1. In regards to the 'uninstall SP1' I would have to agree - there is not much in their that you NEED. Randy - do hardware updates not show as 'optional' anyway - I know they used to on XP - not really noticed on Vista
  2. No, can you change it back :p lol Kodiak Bear
  3. How is it Microsoft?? - if you buy something you go back to where you bought it from and if that fails the manufacturer - I would kick off at Belkin and request either money back or a replacement product that 'works' with Vista. Companies try and pass the buck mate but it is Belkin. SHOPPERS' RIGHTS – Your Legal Rights If it's 2 months old and now is 'incompatible with Vista SP1' then it is not working simple as that. I would seriously recommend doing back ups on CD/DVD using software. what if the HDD fails - or as in this case - is no longer working.
  4. would be beneficial to be in alphabetical order matey :p you have the time :D
  5. No its nothing to do with the Operating System - the BIOS is before the OS kicks in. might be under advanced settings or overclocking options
  6. Rabbitbrush Webbing Moth :D We all know that beans are your favourite food :p like the way you put 'try to keep updated'
  7. Regardless what they say - something is not working with Vista SP1 - there can be a multitude of reasons for this:- some people have had lots of problems with SP1 on Vista - I would just the drive out of the enclosure and use it in the PC as a second drive - ** It's up to BELKIN to provide the support as it's their product. ** or buy another enclosure - if your mobo supports it use firewire as it's much faster.
  8. Rotweiler (spelt right?? lol) Maynard - you eaten all those beans yet?
  9. Belkin : Support : F5U209 User Manual It may well work - but they should still have drivers for it - at the very least. If it works on Vista without SP1 and doesn't with SP1 then Windows must have changed something in SP1 that is causing the problem - Microsoft or Belkin will know what you need to do, in order for it to function again. This is a very specific issue and without specific knowledge of the contents of SP1 then I am afraid we can only offer suggestions.
  10. No mate - you should be fine with that - I HATE the way they do partitions now they do it for people who have no knowledge of PC's and it can be a godsend to them - but they do the partition after all the programs and software installed. Lets be honest it's just a ghosted image, which are NOT reliable. You have made the right decision in opting for something that you can be in control of - :D Just to check that you are aware with the OEM versions MOST retailers will not sell you one unless you buy it with an INTEGRAL part of kit (gone are the days you can buy a £2.99 mouse  and get the disk lol) so you MAY need to buy a CPU,MOBO, or HDD - if you dont need any - give me a shout and I will get the HDD and either I can mail it to you - or the other way round :D
  11. It's not a case of more RAM is better - if you have 2 sticks of RAM and they are both different speeds - the PC will run at the slower memorys speed. you could have the fastest RAM you can get but paired with some slow RAM it will all run slow - if you have tried the newer memory on it's own and it's still no faster then there is a problem elsewhere. Timings are what the memory runs at and some motherboards underclock the RAM so that the PC will run (resulting in slower performance) if you can find what timings the RAM should be at e.g 5-5-5-15-42 and they are at say 5-5-5-18-32 then that's most PROBABLY the problem - to find the memory timings in the BIOS, when the PC boots press whatever button it says at startup to enter the BIOS (usually F3,F8 or F10) and there will be an option called memory timings and will list numbers like I put above with dashes - write them down (if you change, you can put back) and compare them to what the manufacturer recommends.
  12. That Enclosure is meant for Windows 98
  13. Do you know the manufacturer of the RAM - go to their website and they will tell you timings - then go into the BIOS and check that the timings are correct for your RAM
  14. use the disk cleanup option too there is alot of stuff in there that people overlook. right click on the drive in my computer and its to the right of the pi chart
  15. Thats not very encouraging
  16. what make is the external HDD?
  17. Well it comes down to power or incompatibility issues and it looks like your device does not like SP1 - I would look at the release notes in terms of what SP1 offers that you think would be conflicting with the HDD
  18. Depending on the sector he works in there are some big companies feeling the 'credit crunch' at the moment.
  19. If you have a very weak PSU then that can cause crashes - there is a rail within the PSU that powers the USB devices on your PC and if its too low will crash the system.
  20. You may want to invest in one the Flash drives that has a password protection - they are much tougher than using software.
  21. Disable the ones I have said and see how it goes - you need to keep an eye on whats running at startup there is still much more there that you may not use, that you could disable
  22. The next version of Direct3D adds a Computer Shader to the pipeline. Gamefest is Microsoft’s gaming technology conference, and it takes place on 22 and 23 July in Seattle, Washington.
  23. Seagate announces world’s first 1.5TB hard drive. The new drive stores 1.5TB of data over four platters, and Seagate claims that it’s capable of achieving a sustained data rate of 120MB/sec. Due August this year.
  24. sounds more like you have 101 things running at startup to me. type msconfig in a cmd window and then go to startup and post whats on in there.
  25. Sorry to hear that Wolfey - it makes life so much harder when you have to rush to get a job - I have been made redundant 3 out of my 5 jobs  I think its more of a reassurance thing that he doesn't have to rush and get a job and get a job that he wants to do.
