  4. I'm creating my very first .NET app with VB 2005. Everything was a'ok when i decided to remove an unused picture resource. Suddenly all these error pop-ups appeared about a certain error with text something. I reloaded the said image in the app resource and the errors stopped...but as soon as i ran the the program, all the menu items like FILE,EDIT,...etc disappeared and all that's left is a blank menu strip. Those menu items seem to still exist since i can't create a menu item with the same name and they're still listed. Is there a way to "reattach" those menu items into the strip? If yes, how? since i don't see their "interface" anymore. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

  9. Maybe I'm too big a privacy nut, but I fail to see why my usage information and/or survey responses should be tied to my personally information. I know this may seem like a troll, but it is not meant as one.* I was a member of the Windows Feedback Program and thought it was a valid tool to help make windows better in the future.* With these changes I have disenrolled from the program. I am unable to think of any purpose for tying these statistics in with personal information other than for marketing purposes.* What do you guys think?* Is there a technical value to coupling your personal information with these usage statics rather than just using a machineid that is not tied to user info?* Am I over reacting? Copy of the changes*below, items in red are the ones that concerned me.* I am also frustrated that I never recieved this email, and got it forwarded to me from a friend.**I would have had my WFP software update in the background and had the participation agreement change without being aware of it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: winpanel@microsoft.com [mailto:winpanel@microsoft.com] Sent: Thursday, April 10, 2008 6:25 PM To: Subject: notification from the Windows Feedback Program Thank you for participating in the Windows Feedback Program! 10. Great read for those of you interested in the search for intelligent life in the universe. An interesting new mathematical predictive model conceived by Andrew Watson implicitly assumes that intelligent life needs*to exist on an Earth-like planet that orbits a*G class yellow star (that produces more heat and light as it ages)*to exist. Remove this assumption (certainly, intelligence in the*universe need not be uniform)*from his new model (which appears to rely too heavily on*the Daisy World*model)*and the model falls down. 15. We've had a couple of those in the past, but I might as well start a new, relevant one rather than dig an old one. They weren't too relevant to me before. I've lost my camera, and am planning on buying a new one. I would appreciate any opinions, recommendations and reviews. My last camera was a Canon SD700 / IXUS800 / whatever it's called in different parts of the world, and I was very pleased with it. Before that I had a Canon SD300 that I was also pleased with until I dropped it to its untimely death. In short, I had good experience with Canon cameras and would go for another unless someone has specific experiences to share. My requirements: * Ultra-portable. This is to be an everyday camera that's always on me, so the size definitely matters. * SD-card compatible, since I have quite a few cards and readers floating around and it'd be a shame not to use them. Not a biggie, since cards are cheap. * At least 4x optical zoom. That's mostly it. I'm not a megapixel hog, I don't need too many advanced features, manual white balance, wide ISO selection and so forth.*Just a plain, reliable camera to carry around in my bag. Anyone got any recommendations and (especially) horror stories to report? Models that disintegrate within months, batteries that die, LCDs that crack? More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds
  16. Hi All, I'm running Windows XP Home Edition & have a query regarding some Registry keys. The keys involved are HCKU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\User Shell Folders, and HCKU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\Shell Folders.* My understanding is that most of the values in the second key are generated automatically from the values in the first key. The Environment variable USERNAME is defined as "Greg" (without quotes). In the ...\User Shell Folder key I enter: Desktop = G:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Desktop Templates = G:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Templates These values are of type REG_EXPAND_SZ After rebooting, the values which appear in the ...\Shell Folder key are: Desktop = G:\Documents and Settings\Greg\Desktop Templates = G:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Templates These values are of type REG_SZ As these values are of type REG_SZ, I*THINK that %USERNAME% will*not be expanded when the system comes to read it - i.e. the system will look for a folder called G:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\Templates (which does not exist) instead of a folder called G:\Documents and Settings\Greg\Templates. Two questions: Will the system expand the %USERNAME% variable in the REG_SZ-type value Templates and find the correct folder? Is there a reason for the inconsistency between the way that the system generates the values of Desktop and Templates in the ...\Shell Folders key? Incidentally, ...\User Shell Folder values such as Cache, Cookies, Desktop, Favorites, History, My Music, My Pictures, Nethood, Personal, Programs, Recent, Start Menu and Startup are ALL expanded correctly - i.e. the corresponding values in the ...\Shell Folders key all contain Greg in their paths, whereas ...\User Shell Folder values SendTo, Printhood and Templates are NOT expanded - i.e. the values in the ...\Shell Folders key - all contain %USERNAME% in their paths. Hope I've explained the situation adequately. Any comments or suggestions would be most welcome. Best regards, Greg M More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

  18. ZDNet Source: http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=8428 This is in reference to a Gartner statement. I think Gartner is a little off on this, but one thing I see is this: Microsoft is giving developers mostly what they want, and that's why Windows is a very successful development platform. However, Microsoft isn't really giving end consumers what they want. And the stuff they are giving (Windows Media Center, for one), they aren't telling the world about it. I have yet to meet an end user (non developer) who bought Vista or a new cmputer with Vista that knows about Windows Media Center and that it can record your TV programs and burn them to a DVD. The first thing I know most people download, after they bought a new computer, was iTunes, if it wasn't already installed.. Even if they don't currently own an iPod. Anyone have thoughts on this?
