  5. If anyone can solve what my (network) problem is, I'll name a machine in my workgroup (or my smartphone) after their C9 screenname.. :) I'm having trouble with my XBox 360 media center extender connecting to my PC. Namely, it's a poor network connectivity, according to the Tune Network Wizard. Here's the setup: * Dell XPS, hardwired, to the router in the basement. * XBox 360, wireless running 802.11G, 2nd floor. * Router almost directly below the XBox 360. It is 802.11n. Latest firmware was applied. * Two other PCs connect the router. Uncertain of protocol. * Older house: top-of-the line plaster job, although the basement has drywall. * The Xbox 360 has no trouble getting to XBox live. Here's the kicker - a week ago, my signal was almost in the optimum HDTV range. yesterday, it dropped to sub-TV signal. To my knowledge, nothing has changed.. (Obviously, something did). I have already tried to rebooting the Dell and router, to no avail.* At this point, I'm almost ready to drop a*cable down the back of the house in order to hard-wire things..* Any clues? Anything to else to look for? More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

  13. In my applications, I try to use the new fonts that MS delivers with Vista and Office 2007 (Calibri, Segoe UI, ...), of course falling back to other fonts if the user doesn't have them installed. Now I'm getting exceptions under certain circumstances. If I'm trying to measure a string with more than 32000 characters using one of the new fonts, I get an ExternalException that says "A generic error occurred in GDI+". If I use a font like Tahoma or Verdana, there's no problem. If the string is 32000 characters or less, there's no problem. Of course, it's taken me 2 days to locate the exact location and circumstances of the error. And if it was in my own code, I could write some kind of*workaround, but no: the MeasureString is performed by a 3rd party grid control, making it impossible for me to fix it. Which means I am now unable to use Segoe UI (or Calibri)*as the default font for all the grid controls in my applications. What's wrong with these fonts that it makes me unable to use them? Nice way to promote the use of MS's new fonts. More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds
  14. It* is now a pretty common thing to monitor staff by using GPS to determine where a company car is for instance. Taxi firms use it to pin point the location of their fleet at any given moment. This is a serious weapon for scheduling scenarios. Serious Criminals (Felons) are now tagged so Law Enforcement agencies can determine their location at any moment. Yes, it does not always work, but that is not the point I’m trying to make. The most recent and unfortunate child abduction cases here in the UK are either that of Madeline McCann or Shannon Mathews. Both have been big stories, child abduction sadly does occur and must be utterly traumatic for all those involved. What is the problem with tagging children by law up till the age of let’s say five, at that age a chip is removed from them? I am not a parent and can only see advantages to this, and feel that this is surely inevitable. If the government is considering taxing cars (road tax) by using this technology, surely it’s just a matter of time till this is available for children. There are already things like snoop available to monitor children and no-one seems to be making any objections, what do you think? More... View All Our Microsoft Related Feeds

  20. Alright, so this is my problem: for the past couple of months, my host's website (I am hosted on a subdomain) as well as my subdomain has been compromised and injected with malicious, obfuscated javascript that appears to affect *.php and *.htm? files.* Would there be any safe way to check certain pages (assuming that the attack was automated) for anything that looks out of the ordinary, such as an abnormally long string of hex codes?* I do have a sample saved onto my computer from when I was trying to figure out why my Wordpress installation was going whacko earlier today.
