I would: - warn shareholders of a dip (dive) in stocks - buy 5 or 6 Linux companies (hopefully ubuntu among them) combine - "win-ize" - stop all work on IE - use mozilla - offer them best of - ie tech (open ie) - open sourse win media / silverlight / all api's - new ad company - get 500 fonts for web- (or buy corel - to offset web only design slant = expression) - ensure to keep just enough of* winmedia / win UI / kernal / propietary - but open sourse the rest = help - CLOSE most offices / stop building: empower workers to work from home - impliment state of the art video conferencing - work towards 0 offices within 5 years - build MS Computer - force oems to carry it as baseline "to beat" bla bla.. i dunno... daunting task.* Oballmer has been doing good.* but can he do better?* could you? * yes i like him better when i call him oballmer ;) ..perhaps there's still.... Just a quick, and poorly filmed, update from the dev team on what we worked on during the last sprint and what we are building right now. Yes the filming is shoddy, and yes the screens are hard to read... we'll get better, but we didn't want to spend a lot of time redoing this one when we know you'd rather we keep focused on developing the dev site :) Listen to the podcast(MP3) Listen to the podcast(WMA) Download the Video Watch the Video More... what percentage = a great software product? can a web service - with emotional underpinnings - like facebook - rival that of something with more technical/logical underpinnings - like office. is the emotion of mac and linux users - cutting in to the technical merits (network effects) windows has always enjoyed? (technically better - but emotionally losing ground?) Is it important to have a likeable ceo - or public face is it better to have a technical one?* a showman? what % is the perfect equation? - to a software product - and the ecosystem (company personality?) surrounding it? Edit: what % would you say apple or ms or google is currently? id venture... ms -****** 10% emotion / 90% logic apple -** 75% emotion*/ 25% logic google*** 25% emotion / 75% logic *neither emotion or logic are "bad"...* just left and right... brain? My name is a bit on the common side, there are 7 people in Wikipedia with my name already, so I need to make myself more unique so I'm more googleable (I know this can be undesirable in some circumstances, but I don't have any facebook profiles with drunken pictures on). As many of you know, my first name is the uninspiring "David", and whilst I'm English, my parents are Welsh and Irish respectivly. Going with the Welsh heritage side of things I was thinking of changing my first name to "Dewi" (not pronounced "Dewey" btw) which is a Welsh variant of David... and also the name of the dragon on the Welsh flag, but that's just bonus points. I already call myself Dewi on messenger because people were complaining they had too many Davids, and I think the name's growing on me. Since it isn't an overreaching name change I don't need to fill out any legal forms or anything, I can start using it whenever I want. Do you think it's a good idea to alter your first name so it's more unique? And if you had the opportunity (and inclination) what would you change your name to? Difficulty: no "Max Power". More... I've just getting started at using WCF, but like what I've seen so far.* I've been reading about it, writing my interfaces and implementing them with classes, etc.* It seems to be going well. But one thing I would like to do is both pass into methods ADO.NET DataTables or DataSets.* I know that isn't the "proper" way to do things, especially if you want to be cross platform.* But in this case I am writing WCF services which will be used in-house, probably using TCP for the protocol, between our Windows 2003 Servers and the clients' PCs.* In that situation, is it OK to use DataSets and DataTables?* Or doesn't that work? For your viewing enjoyment, here is a very thought provoking geekSpeak episode.* James Kovacs is the guest, and he really shows us the the shortcomings of tightly coupled architectures from the perspective of testing and maintenance. James gives lots of guidance on how to avoid introducing dependencies that result in too-tightly-coupled a design. The decoupled approach makes a lot of sense once you see it, and you've probably been doing it to a lesser degree without even being aware of it. There's also a lot of good discussion in here about Test Driven Development, and how tight coupling impacts the ability to create effective tests that are poor at isolating the errors you need to fix. James shows how using unit testing frameworks can reveal this coupling nicely. James also introduces the concept of mock objects, and compares them to fake objects. He also shows off a couple of interesting tools. Watch this geekSpeak to learn more about how you can create more nimble code bases and avoid ripple effects when code is changed. Also, see if you can figure out where Glen's audio got disconnected! Be sure to read the article James wrote for MSDN magazine to extend your learning. More resources related to this geekSpeak can be found on our geekSpeak blog.
