1. Your expectations have now become reality :( :(
2. Hi Ray Take a look here click here Depending upon how much you want to store there are some good free options. I don't use "cloud" so cannot really advise on the pros and cons.
3. I hope all goes well for you Andy - good luck. Get back to us when you are able to and we will continue from there.
4. IDE uses a broad grey cable. Just to be sure - take a look here: click here Desktop drives are 3.5 inch ...........Laptop drives are 2.5 inch You would need to make sure that you have the correct size and type ( IDE / SATA ) when selecting an enclosure.
5. This is getting away from your original question but ....it is very rare that a virus would kill a hard drive. The PC repair shop should have been able to get rid of the virus for you and still keep the XP system. ( difficult to say ....and unless we had some logs etc our Security experts would not be able to advise further on this one ..I don't think ) So - what you are asking is ....... did the PC repair shop actually transfer all of your photos as they said they have done. ? Did you keep the photos in one location on the old hard drive ? In other words ...."My Photos" or were they all over the drive in different files and locations ? What you can do on the new Win7 drive is .... Start > type in .jpg ( that is dot jpg - no space ) in the search box and hit enter. This will locate all pictures with a .jpg file extension. At the bottom of the search there will be an option to search in other locations ( Computer / Homegroup etc etc ) It may be labour intensive but you should be able to find the location of your images using this method.
6. Just for clarity Ray ... I assume this is 13 GB ( Giga-bytes ) ?
7. Hi Ray Start > Computer > right click on C: > Properties This should tell you.
8. Electronics started changing direction in the latter years that I was working. The exam boards started pushing PIC based projects ( Peripheral Integrated Circuits ) programmable ICs. I enjoyed this side of it as it integrated programming with Electronics. It took a lot of the understanding of basic electronics away though as PICs could be used to substitute for complete circuits that used to be built with discrete components. Progress :) My old school would welcome them - but I suspect that you are too far away to collect :) Depends on what part of Wales you are ......I know they collect kids from as far away as St. Asaph
9. It is probably the SATA drivers - or lack of them. Go back into the BIOS and look for AHCI next to SATA HDD and see if you can set this to IDE or Compatibility Mode. Try the installation again.
10. Try this: It sounds as if the files have been transferred onto the Hard Drive but the system is having difficulty booting up from them to complete the installation. When you get the "A disk read error occurred. - press Ctrl+Alt+Del to start. " try taking the CD out of the drive and then hit CTRL+ALT+DEL It may be that the system is looking at the CD Drive when it is expecting the Hard Drive. Let me know how you get on.
11. Hi Ron - good to see that you were finally able to post your problem. I have a Win7 desktop and Win 8.1 laptop and tried to create a homegroup to test. Strangely - I am getting exactly the same problems that you are - and I have not managed to solve this problem yet. So I too would be interested to hear of any possible solutions :)
12. Yep - me too. That was about 25+ years ago. I still had veroboard in my stock cupboard when I left :)
13. That is a very nice IC [ MIC 502 ] It looks like a combination of an OpAmp and a 555 Timer. We used to use 555s with kids in school on projects to control motor speeds using a variable resistor - This was manual. [ That takes me back a few years :) ]
14. I am sorry John - I have no knowledge of this ....................hopefully somebody else here will be able to offer more useful advice :)
15. No problem :) If you are sure that you have everything off the hard drive that you need ( photos / files / documents / email addresses etc ) then you can begin the installation process. Take a look here - click here As you have the CDROM set as first boot device you can skip through to "Part 2" Please Note: This is explaining how to re-install XP using a full installation disk [ not Recovery Disks ] The only problem you may incur is the SATA drivers ...... Let's know how you get on. If you have any questions please ask before you start the re-install.
16. Let us know how you get on with the comms cupboard :)
17. By what I can find out - this fan seems to be running all of the time. Not what you want ....obviously. Sorry I cannot be of further help. :(
18. Hi John The simplest solution here would be to attach a USB keyboard. Do you have one ?
19. Hi I have to ask - why buy this one if you didn't want the temperature function ? From what I can find out ... The fan will rotate at approx 400 r/m if the sensor is in a cool location. This will increase to about 1,300 r/m if the temp is 40 C or above. The sensor will be a thermistor. This is basically a resistor that changes its resistance with temperature. As the temperature rises - the resistance decreases ( for most thermistors ...i.e. negative temperature co-efficient ) There will be another resistor in series with this. The mid-point between the two resistors returns a voltage. As the voltage here changes this is what controls the fan. [ At least this is how I see it working ] If you cut the sensor off you will get one of the two extremes ( either 400 r/m or 1300 r/m ) Obviously with the sensor gone this will fix the fan speed. If this isn't the speed that you want you can try various resistors across the two wires that were attached to the sensor. You could also try a pre-set resistor ( small variable ) using the centre connection and one of the others. This would be trial and error for values as we do not know the resistance extremes of the sensor. Is the fan just to have an on / off function or are you intending to control the speed from this unit too ? Hope this helps.
20. Hi Andy From what I have read - there were no new drivers added to SP3. If your motherboard has SATA integrated into the chipset then there will be no problem. ( some of the newer boards did ) If it doesn't, and we need to install SATA drivers separately. If all else fails it is possible to have the BIOS treat the SATA drive as IDE. It would be a little slower - but you probably wouldn't notice. Have you got email addresses saved ? Before we go any further - can you check in the BIOS that the CDROM drive is the first in the Boot Order. To do this: Switch on > constantly alternate between tapping the DEL and F2 keys about once per second. One of these will let you access the BIOS - this is the easiest way to find out. Failing that - on screen as it boot up it will say something like ....." Press --- to enter Setup" Once in the BIOS move around with the arrow keys. You are looking for Boot Order / Boot Sequence or similar. If the CDROM is first in the order ( at the top ) then there is nothing to do. If it isn't then it needs to be moved up. Use the arrow keys to highlight it - it will say on screen how to move it. ( usually + / - key ) If you do move it then you need to Save and Exit .....Usually F10 Again it will say on screen. Let us know that you have got this far :)
21. That's looking much better - an artist ! :)
22. Hi Nuley one of our Security Experts will be along to help shortly. I can see from the logs that many of the entries are PUPs - Potentially Unwanted Programs .......not necessarily bad ...just annoying :) The security guys will advise further.
23. Hi Andy The guys here are the best - we have been together for years ! re your re-install. Please make sure that you have copied everything from My Documents / Photos etc onto the external Toshiba drive. Once you reinstall you will lose everything. If your wife has an email facility on this pc she may want to save the addresses there too. If this is Outlook Express it should be possible to export the file to the external hard drive. Please confirm that you are ready to go and are happy to wipe the drive. Also - the disk that you have ....does it say on it anything related to SP1 /SP2 or SP3 ? XP should have SP3 installed and if it doesn't have this on the disk we will need to update it later. Let me know if you have any questions. ( out all day tomorrow ...Saturday ...so will be slow to respond ) Nev may jump in to assist :) =========== In preparation: XP is poor when it comes to drivers for hardware. Is this a branded PC ( hewlett packard / Dell etc ) if so ....we will need the make and model number. Also: Start > Run > type in ......devmgmt.msc ... ENTER make a note of exactly what it says next to ... 1. Network Adapters 2. Sound / Video 3. Display Adapters We should be able to get these drivers from the manufacturers site - but often there are 2 or 3 alternatives. Also: The internal hard drive ....is this IDE ( broad grey data cable attached ) ?
24. I't great when a thread comes together :)
25. Hi Andy I have just popped in .....will be back on line later. I will answer this then. If you reply to this I will get a reminder :)
