Hi, I only yesterday upgraded my Windows Vista HP PC to Windows 8 Pro and to be honest it was nothing but trouble up to now, for on like every second reboot there appears to be some random problem; what I've encountered so far: - Damaged iso (I had to redownload the product so I could install it) - Sudden driver incompatibility (on the 3rd reboot suddenly I got a black screen before reaching the lock screen, after endless messing around with the BootCD and some research I finally found the latest Nvidia driver to be to blame (although it worked fine the last two times), so using a modification of this trick I found (I'd post the link if I was allowed to) I managed to un- and reinstall it in Windows 7 compatibility mode (the trick involves modifying C:BootBCD to feature a second OS, so the selection screen including options such as safemode shows up) - Locked Desktop-App (when I tried to start Windows Update it launched into the taskbar(?, whats the correct term for that btw?) on the left side of the screen, nothing else happened, all I could do is right-click and end it, afterwards I was locked on the start screen, I could still start apps and see them in the preview but no matter what, I could not switch back into the Desktop-App, nor start any "outside-of-the-desktop-app"-apps or -settings. Funny thing is, it was fixed after I tried to log off (notepad's "save changes?"-dialog prevented that from actually happening)) - now thet I finallygot all the apps I need, most of the settings set: I can't log on, as starting with the OS-selection screen (where I get to choose from the actual Windows 8 or my manually created copy with safemode enabled) Windows won't accept any input whatsoever (neither using USB-, nor PS/2- mouse/keyboard). All of which are fully functional, as all of them work fine in the BIOS and the BootCD. Please let me know if you have any idea on how to solve this, after all this I just want to start using Windows 8 finally. (Also let me know if you need any additional information on my system :) ) PS: also if this happens to be in the wrong forum, feel free to move to where it belongs ;) View the full article

Just recently got myself a Microsoft Surface Pro (128 GB), enjoying it as a replacement to my laptop, but while carrying out some first time setup like I do on fresh installation of Windows, I bumped into an unusual situation; I can't perform a full system image backup of my Surface Pro. The error occurred in the middle of a backup process and it stated the following: Check your backup Windows Backup skipped backing up system image because one of the critical volumes is not having enough free space. Free up some space by deleting unnecessary files and try again. Funny thing is, I'm backing up to a 1.5 TB external HDD; that is more than enough to hold 128 GB of data. Did some googling and found that it has something to do with the SOURCE partitions not being big enough to store some volume shadow copy files during the backup. Any suggestions on the best way to fix this? View the full article

I know there are already a few threads related to monitor detection problems, but my issue seems to be somewhat unique... I'm running an HP p2-1394 and two AOC 2243W (21") monitors. Most of the time I have no problems, but every so often, my second monitor decides to quit working. Sometimes it occurs after Windows updates automatically, sometimes just randomly when I boot up. Both monitors appear to be detected when I look at the display settings, but the problematic monitor will read "No Signal" when I turn it on (it turns on with the computer when I boot up, but then shuts itself off once the login screen comes up). Under "Devices & Printers" >> AOC2243 (the monitor) >> Properties >> Hardware >> Properties: it reads "This device is working properly" The Driver Date is 3/18/2010, and version 1.0.0.0, and the "Update Driver" button is not active/available. Troubleshooting identifies no problems. Oddly, after I've rebooted a random number of times and/or just waited a random amount of time, the monitor just comes back to life. There seems to be no method to this madness. It seems that it's got to be a driver issue, but the inactivity of the "Update Driver" options tells me otherwise...what the heck is going on? Thanks ahead of time for any help. View the full article

On my home Win 8 system C:Users is shared to Everyone (Full Control) and NTFS restricted to Everyone (ReadExecute, List). On my business system I also have a Users home directory and no one but myself (and Network Admins) can access it. What are the "right" permissions for that directory? TIA, edm2 View the full article

windows 8 Software installation oversight
News Bot posted a topic in Operating Systems Help & Support
Have noticed a design problem with Windows 8 When you install some software which then asks for a reboot to complete installation - you say yes and it reboots fine, but installation doesn't automatically continue after you log back on UNTIL you click Desktop again This is okay for us who work in IT, but could be confusing for other users Surely installation should pop up and continue whether at desktop or windows 8 start screen Looks like this issue is that UAC is waiting for you to say yes to continue - and the UAC prompt doesn't appear on Start Screen - so as soon as you click Desktop the UAC prompt is flashing in the taskbar waiting for you Darren Rose View the full article -

windows 8 To pursue you enquiry, press Enter
News Bot posted a topic in Operating Systems Help & Support
Hello, On my new PC: HP Pavilion p6-2310 supplied with Win 8 64 bits, I added 3 partitions. So I had the following partitions: (from left to right) 1 Go Not allocated 360 Mo (System EFI) Win8 (C:) with Win 8 installed Win7 (G:) XP (H:) Data (J:) Recovery (D:) After I launch the install of Win 7 on the partition next to Win 8, the system rebooted and I got a black screen with the test: (translation from French) : =========================================== Windows boot manager A recent change to the hardware or to the software could have installed an incorrectly signed file or a damaged one… To pursue you enquiry, press Enter. File: $windows.~BTWindowssystem32Winload.efi Status: 0xc0000428 The digital sign of this file could not be checked. ============================================ I got also a very fleeting message which said approximately: "Your partitions are not in a good order" I fact, after the trial (and failure) of installation Win 7, my partitions are in the following order: 1 Go Not allocated 360 Mo (System EFI) Win8 (C:) with Win 8 installed Data (I:) Win7(H:) XP (G:) Recovery (D) So the "Data" partition moved between Win8 and Win7. I don't want to pursue any enquery, I just want to install Win7 on a partition beside Win8. What is wrong? Thanks for your help View the full article -
Since I have windows 8 are my landscape photos automatically upright. I could adapt this used in windows viewer instance, but this no longer works. Now I need a special program startup (Ashampoo Photo Commander) to the pictures properly set. This is due to the placement of the photos on the internet. Is there something in windows 8 possible that the photos can be displayed as the digital camera coming and that I can put it himself? The pictures are in Windows automatically "correct" error when I upload them they are wrong. Very very annoying. In previous versions of Windows, I had no problems here. I understand than Windows 8 look at the exif data. Sincerely Piet Manders View the full article

Hello, I have a Samsung r700 laptop and have re-installed windows (following a crash) from rescue disc-all, ok there, but when I install drivers from samsung media disc they load (after a long while) and I am then asked to re-boot then press finish button. I do that and laptop says shutting down and then it seems try to start up. I then have a grey screen but even after 12 hours nothing happens. I then switched off and can only start back up in safe mode. Any ideas how I can fix this. OT:Re-booting problem Thanks View this thread

Some time ago I built a PC with a Windows 7 64 bit operating system with an ASrock 880GMH/USB3 R2.0 motherboard fitted with an AMD Athlon II X 2 260 processor 3.20 GHz which has had an intermittent fault all its life, the fault is that it intermittently does not detect the monitor, when it does that then I have to shut the computer down with the power button as there is a blank screen, once I do that then it will boot up normally for some time, then it happens again, I have worked on this problem for far too long and have decided to change my motherboard and processor, what I wish to know is, "will it affect my Hard drive" I have a recovery disk as well as a system image and file and folder backed up on an external drive, it is not long ago that I fitted a new larger hard drive and did a clean install, so it does not appear to have anything to do with the hard drive, I would prefer not to have to do another clean install as you have to reactivate and I already have reactivated once recently. I was asked to give them access to my computer because Microsoft had detected a serious virus coming from my computer that was infecting other computers. The call sounded suspect, like a sweatbox call centre with people who had East Indian accents. I asked for their telephone number to prove they were from Microsoft and I was given 16143889092 when I called them back it didn't sound like a professional service. I recall coming across this group of people when I installed some Macafee software and was having problems. How is it no one can shut these guys down from misrepresenting themselves? View this thread
