  1. Could you CTRL+ALT+DEL and open device manager and see if there are any processes that appear rather high listed there?
  2. I wish I was lying down. Vista is annoying but you can get used to it. Have a go and let me know how it goes.. I am sure we can help Katie along with the Vista trials and tribulations.
  3. Hey Wales and welcome. I am unsure of this issue and hope the boys of the forum will chip in and help also. That is not to say I know nothing and the boys know it all. :D I asume your running Vista? I see you are running 4 gig RAM whne I checked your specs: Product Specifications HP Pavilion Slimline s5128uk Desktop PC - HP technical support (United Kingdom - English) So lack of RAM would not be an issue. What do you have your virtual memory set at? Change the size of virtual memory How much free space do you have on your hard drive? Try a disk cleanup. Click start/all programs/accessories/system tools/disk cleanup/check all boxes/click ok. Is all your RAM showing in computer/properties? Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool
  4. Hey Dave and thankyou.:) The missing soace is due to backup and restore and system restore. Yup annoying Vista does this and you loose space. Ok you can reduce system restore space used in Vista and delete system restore points this will free up space. Click start/all programs/accessories/system tools/disk cleanup/click files from all users of this computer/elivated admin popup click continue/make sure C is highlighted and click ok/check all boxes then click more options tab/click on cleanup button listed under system restore and shadow copies/in the popup windows click delete/click ok/click delete files. The utility to change the settings is a command line utility called vssadmin. You’ll have to open a command prompt in administrator mode by entering cmd into the start menu and hitting Ctrl+Shift+Enter, or right-clicking the command prompt and selecting Run as Administrator. http://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/WindowsLiveWriter/ReduceSystemRestoresDiskUsageinVista_C3A/image%7B0%7D.png Show Allocated System Restore Size Type in the following command into the prompt: vssadmin list shadowstorage http://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/WindowsLiveWriter/ReduceSystemRestoresDiskUsageinVista_C3A/image%7B0%7D%5B1%5D.png As you can see in the screenshot, System Restore is taking up 2.2 GB on my system.. and I just reinstalled! Changing the Allocated System Restore Size To change the maximum size on the disk that System Restore will use, you will need to type in the following command: vssadmin Resize ShadowStorage /For=C: /On=C: /Maxsize=3GB http://www.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/WindowsLiveWriter/ReduceSystemRestoresDiskUsageinVista_C3A/image%7B0%7D%5B2%5D.png You can change the /for and /on to match the drive that System Restore is enabled on, and you can set a different size for the max size. I chose 3GB for the sake of this example, but you could also limit it to 500MB or something else if you wanted to. If you have plenty of disk space, I’d recommend leaving the values alone, but if you are running low on space, this is a quick way to help the problem. I think you should keep Vista and just need a little help in using it.
  5. Hello Kim. There so far appears no help from MSN to fix all the issues this update is causing many many people. All I myself can say at the moment is uninstall MSN and reinstall and hope for the best. If the above does not work then report your issue to Windows Live Support with as much details as possible: http://support.live.com/eform.aspx?productKey=wlm...&ct=eformts&scrx=1
  6. Hello Dave me again. You would need either the XP install disk or the recovery disk just incase of a issue. Read this link and see if you would attempt it: How to dual boot Windows XP and Linux (XP installed first) -- the step-by-step guide with screenshots
  7. That is excellent. Some time computers can be a little buggy or even a bad shut down can change boot orders.Like a hicup in the BIOS.I do not think we know why these changes are made realy. But something happens and oops something goes wrong. But hey your up and running again and that is great.
  8. Hey Bugsy. Yes your correct recover the largest partiton not that 10 gig. Yes load drivers. The english question either is appropriate. As for drivers I always go for NVIDIA or ATI Radeaon direct from there website although Dell drivers should be fine. Use device manager and windows update for your drivers. Drivers can be downloaded and saved to another computer and transfered using a USB pen drive, disk or floppy. This maybe so if the network adaptor driver is missing. You will need the driver to download and update the computer. The 10 gig HDD was origonaly the hidden recovery console. Write nans COA key down ready to input it. You do not need to set a password for her untill you are fully recovered and logged onto windows. You can at a later date put the recovery console back on that 10 gig,it is well worth it.But do not worry about that now. You should be fine.

  10. Ha ha ha I often turn my keyboard upside down to empty my dinner out of it. Get a can of compressed air, does the job better. I hope this goes well for you. Now remember I would then fully update again and install SP2 before you install other software this will ensure the OS is not corrupt and should have no further problems. Fingers crossed.

  12. Do you know anyone who has a multi charger?
  13. You should be ok downloading SP 1 but you do know SP2 is also ready for download. I would sugest fully update hardware drives.Update software and get as many Miceosift updates before installing an SP. It is possible the operating system was corrupted before the SP install.Or the SP was corrupted on download, things like this can happen.
  14. If you can get it to repair and then remove her files then do a restore. It is not your fault, this was a simple error many endured when SP1 arrived out. This is why I say fully update the system and make sure it is clean before allowing an SP to install. Try a repair and see if it works.
  15. Swansea City 3 Cardiff 2. Now who is laughing?
  16. You can try a repair. But if that doesnt work then I would remove the hard drive and fit as a slave to another computer and remove all nans pictures and files.Just drag and drop them. Refit the hard drive and run a recovery back to factory reset. I should of sugested that earlier.
  17. Hello Bugsy. I am afraid to say it looks like you need to boot into recovery console and do a full recovery. Before installing a SP of any level I always tell people to fully update there system with as many Microsoft updates and driver updates as possible.Run the antivirus.Clean out temp files and so on.Give the computer a service then attempt an install of an SP. Turn on the computer. As the computer starts, press <F8> on the keyboard until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears on the screen. NOTE: You must press <F8> before the Windows logo appears on the screen. If you press <F8> after the Windows logo appears on the screen, the Advanced Boot Options menu will not appear on the screen. If you do not see the Advanced Boot Options menu, restart the computer, and then repeat this step until you see the menu on the screen. Press the <Down Arrow> on the keyboard to select Repair Your Computer on the Advanced Boot Options menu, and then press <Enter>. Specify the language settings that you want, and then click Next. Log in as a user who has administrative credentials, and then click OK. Click Dell Factory Image Restore. In the Dell Factory Image Restore window, click Next. Click to select the Yes, reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory condition check box. Click Next. The computer is restored to the default factory configuration. When the restore operation is completed, click Finish to restart the computer. The software is now installed as it was when the computer was first received.
  18. Hello Paul and welcome. Ok lets start you off with a few things to check. Firstly restart your computer and on the post screen it should say "Press ? to enter setup" ? could be Del,F1,F2 or another. Press the key it tells you to and once in Setup/BIOS load defaults,it will show you what key to press to load defaults in BIOS. While in setup located boot tab and make sure it is set to Hard drive as first,CD/DVD roms as the second and if you have more than one rom drive make the second one third boot. Now save and exit. Now is that a faster startup? Click start/open run box/type in msconfig and hit ok. Under start up tab uncheck things not required for startup but do not uncheck essential windows processes. This will be items like MSN,Yahoo, windows media player, print driver, items such as these can be unchecked. Then hit apply and restart your computer. Is that any faster? Ok now another thing to try is: Click start/right click on my computer and choose properties/hard ware tab/device manager. Right click on items listed there and choose update driver. Now are you running any faster than you were?

  21. I see your thread has been answered for you already on PCHF. You need to buy more RAM/Memory.
  22. Please try the following: start-> type "services.msc" -> enter -> continue on the sec prompt. check that no services are disabled. 1. Click the Start menu, in Start Search, type "cmd" (without quotation marks), right-click on cmd.exe and click Run as Administrator. 2. Run the following commands pressing Enter after each one. netsh winsock reset catalog netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log Restart the computer for the settings to take effect. Also if the above dont work try the following in cmd: In the command prompt, run the following command: regsvr32 Netshell.dll regsvr32 netcfgx.dll regsvr32 Netman.dll If the above procedure does not work you can try removing all network adapters in Device Manager and reinstall the driver for your network card.
