1. Have you stripped down the system to the basics as per my previous post ? If you have the 300Watt PSU in ( know good and working ? ) and you still don't get POST beeps then it is a dead motherboard. If you buy a replacement you will need to re-install the Operating System unless you get exactly the same m/board. It is possible to get data off your hard drive if you need it.
2. Hi, yes it will be quick enough and will cope with what you want to do. 6GB RAM / 64 bit system / 2.4GB processor - yes it will perform OK.
3. The motherboard from your link is uATX Form Factor. Small. This is OK - but if you go for a small case you may be limiting your choice of Video Card. uATX are compatible with ATX size cases.
4. I will leave Vr5fx to continue with this ......but These statements contradict.
5. Hi, I hope somebody else will pick this up ( I am away for a few days ) I think this is your machine ... I don't see a fan at the front ( left side ) ? Can you be a bit more specific? photo?
6. I was looking at this thread but didn't pick it up as I am away for a few days. Vr5fx will be able to confirm: I think this card is a dual slot ( wide ) card. It will take up 2 blanks in the back of the machine. This is not normally a problem but looking at your photos there are 2 capacitors below the slot. These may ( not sure ) obstruct the wide card. It depends on how tall they are.
7. There are variants of the i3 530 – 2.93 GHz Hyper-Threading 540 – 3.06 GHz Hyper-Threading 550 – 3.2 GHz Hyper-Threading 560 – 3.33 GHz Hyper-Threading From your link the processor that you have is 2.4GHz As Nev says - depends on what you want to use the machine for. A machine with integrated graphics is never going to play high end games for instance.
8. Hi and welcome to ExTS The news isn't good I'm afraid ....... The clicking is more than likely your hard drive. It is the sound of a dead or dying drive. The arm with the read head on it ... Cannot read the data off the drive and swings across and hits a stop causing the clicking sound.
9. Hi, Aren't kids great ?? :) I suspect that the motherboard may have been damaged .....hard to say. Take a look here: http://s13.zetaboards.com/kenspchelp/topic/6964867/1/#new It would help if we knew that the system used to beep once on boot-up ...........did it ? Once stripped down to the 20(4) way power connector switch on. If it used to beep before we are looking for POST beeps. If it does beep we can take it from there. If it NEVER used to beep ( no internal speaker ) then you are looking for the fans to stay rotating. In other words - a stable system - no system dying.
10. I have joined the 21 Century :) My last mobile belonged to my son - 13 years ago !!!! ( and he had it for 2 years before that ) I have used it ever since. My broadband company emailed me with an offer I couldn't refuse. Samsung Galaxy Y with 250 texts / 100 calls / 200MB d/l ..............all for £5 / month. I know some will say that 100 calls etc isn't enough .....but if you consider that my mobile monthly bill for years has rarely been above £3 this suits me down to the ground :)
11. Hi Does this help? click here
12. If it connected with the WiFi Adapter then your old adapter must be faulty. Good to hear that you can use it wireless again :) You need to go back and change the "IP Address and DNS Servers ...." to Auto detect. (post #15)
13. Hi and welcome to ExTS :)
14. Bit drastic - but congratulation on solving the problem :)
15. Hi, I would have suggested trying Safe Mode - but for some reason you cannot access this. The normal proceedure is to uninstall the present card's drivers. Start > Run ....type in .....devmgmt.msc ....hit Enter Click on the + next to Display Adapters and right click on the card listed. Properties > Uninstall. Shut down normally and Switch off at the wall. Remove the old card and replace with the new one. Boot up. Windows will find new hardware and you can install the drivers from there. However ..... If you cannot get to Device Manager .......you will have to try installing the card without uninstalling the old drivers. ( sometimes there is a conflict ...........hopefully not in your case ) There are no guarantees that a replacement card will fix the problem - but all clues point in this direction.
16. If the above doesn't work for you try the following: Start > Run ....type in ....cmd .....Enter At the prompt type in .... netsh int ip reset reset.log .(Enter).............To reset TCP/IP Then type.... netsh winsock reset catalog .(Enter)...........To Reset WINSOCK Try the connections now. If this fixes it we can go back to the manual settings (post #15 ) and make them auto again.
17. Thanks Maynard ....I missed that post by Halcaraxe :) If the system does NOT restart with the card out of the slot but is DOES restart with the card in the slot ...... the obvious conclusion is that there is a fault on the card causing the restarts.
18. What I was hoping you would report back on was ... Did the system restart with the Video Card out of the slot? If not then the card is the problem.
19. You will have to as the monitor attaches directly to the Video Card. You will need to disconnect the white plug from the card too - unless the lead is long enough to leave attached and move the card to a safe point within the case. Recovery Disk will allow you to restore the system to factory settings - not what we want to do. There is no option to do a Repair Install using this. So .....with the card out switch on. If it is stable there should be one set of beeps. ( This is what we are hoping for ) If it restarts you will hear the beeps again. With the card in how many beeps do you get ? One is normal.
20. When you go to device manager is there a yellow exclamation mark or question mark against Keyboards when you click the + ?
21. Hi Sue Did the software do what you wanted ?
22. Hi and welcome to ExTS It could well be a driver problem. Plug in your external keyboard and boot up. Start > type in ......devmgmt.msc ......Enter Click on the + next to Keyboards Right click on the Sony Keyboard listed > Properties > Update Drivers. If this doesn't fix it from the Properties options select "Uninstall" Now re-boot. Windows will find "New" hardware and install the drivers again.
23. You had me thinking that we had solved it for a while ..... :) Does this system Beep when you switch it on ? Switch off at the wall. Try taking the Video Card out - there is one small screw. Switch on. If the machine beeped before - there should be a change in Beep Code. Leave it running - you are watching for it re-booting. ( Hard drive stops / fans stop / keyboard LEDs go out etc ) Then Beeps again. Does it re-boot with the video card out ? This is XP - correct ? Do you have the original installation CD for the Operating System ? ( Not recovery disks ) If you do we can try a Repair Install of the OS.
24. Hi This doesn't sound like a virus to me ( not that I am an expert in this field ) The whole point of taking the battery out is that we reset the BIOS to defaults. The Date and Time should not be affected but if they are it is easy enough to correct. If you have a new CMOS ( usually CR3220 ) battery then by all means install it. It certainly sounds like a Graphics Card problem - but we are exploring other options too. All things are possible - but the description of what happens on screen plus the fact that you have re-installed and still have the same problem certainly doesn't point us in that direction.
25. OK - no problem :) This is all relatively easy stuff. The Motherboard is the big circuit board that everything is attached to. The CMOS battery maintains the settings in the BIOS - one of the simpler things it does is keep the Date and time set correctly. DO NOT take the CMOS battery out when the computer is switched on. Shut down and unplug from the wall. The RAM modules look something like this: The white levers at either end pivot outwards to release the module. Putting them back is a simple case of locating the module in the slot and press down on one end - then the other.
