I have been trying to determine why our virtual smart card driver no longer allows logon under Windows XP SP3. After spending some time debugging the driver I found a point at which there was potential for a reader state to not be set correctly. Testing this change showed that indeed solved the problem. After cleaning up testing code in the driver, retesting a newly built version showed the same problem again. Watching the states via WinDbg showed that the reader states are indeed being set to the correct values. The card tracking notification is being sent when the card is determined to be present, and the reader state is ending in SCARD_SPECIFIC. However at this point the OS (scardsvr) no longer sends any further requests to the driver. Retesting the new version under Vista and 7 showed it to be working. On a hunch I checked to see if the test system received any updates, and it did. Reviewing the updates produced a list of culprits: KB2778344, KB2799494, KB2758857. After removing KB2778344 and retesting showed that the new driver functions as expected. Are there potential changes in the KB that affect the use of smart cards during logon (from the CAD screen)? Was there a change to the wdm smclib that I don't have on by dev system? Thanks, Nik View this thread

All, I was hoping that someone might be able to comment on something I noticed when it comes to windows updates and the new automatic maintenance feature in windows 8. It seems to me that regardless if I have “install [windows] updates automatically” selected, I also must have automatic maintenance enabled or windows updates will not install in windows 8. I see in the windows updates settings “updates will automatically be installed during the maintenance window”. Now, I don’t have my laptop on at all times, so the auto maintenance feature never really runs during my ‘down time’. When it does run, it slows my PC down and normally never fully gets done running because my PC is only on for at most 2 hours at a time. Honestly, I don’t have any use for the auto maintenance feature because I periodically check for viruses/malware and use CCleaner to keep the junk off of my PC. Am I correct that there is no way to install updates automatically, unless automatic maintenance is enabled? It seems weird to me that updates are dependent on this new feature. Having to check for updates manually just seems like a step backwards. Thanks! View this thread

Hi and I have a laptop that has had this problem since the new year and have never got around to fixing it. After shutdown there would be a notice that says PLEASE DO NOT PLUG OFF YOUR MACHINE/ INSTALLING UPDATES 1 OF 2 now at first it was normal because it was just a regular update but it appears every time after shutdown now and is quite annoying having to wait an hour before the screen is black. I have tried the microsoft fix software, it worked, but only for a day. I have tried resetting windows updates and nothing helped . Solutions anyone? View this thread

This happens often but not all the time. When I select Microsoft Sec Essentials to check for malware, it briefly flashes like it is about to open, but then it closes). I've deleted and re-installed Mic Sec. Essentials several times but nothigh has worked . What to do next? Please reply to *** Email address is removed for privacy ***. Thanks. View this thread

I am trying to uninstall Windows Media Player as per a third party request. I go to Control Panel/Turn Windows Features on or off I uncheck the box by Media Player then OK Following all directions to reboot. After reboot the computer goes through the process of updating. At the end it says it did not update and is reversing all changes. I have run the Microsoft "Fix It" for Installer it says it finds a problem and fixes it. I actually does not fix it. Any suggestions? View this thread

Im really hoping someone can help with this BSOD I am getting... When it pops up, it states "SYETEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION"I read another post like this on the forums and someone helping asked for the msinfo logs and minidump logs, so I got both of those and uploaded them to my skydrive as the other forum prompted. If it can help here are the links:https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=75737EF9177F8062!1453https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=75737EF9177F8062!1452There are other times when my computer crashes, and I get a message saying "explorer.exe has stopped responding" and I get a message to End Task, but it is frozen and wont let me. These two events have been happening the last two months or so at lease once a day.Troubleshooting, I thought Norton360 might be the problem, but I found out that it wasnt after I used Norton's removal tool and uninstalled the software. Then I thought I was getting a lot closer when I uninstalled my nvidia graphics card drivers, it worked for what seemed to be a bit longer but it again did nothing. From what I can tell, the problem (usually) happens when I leave my computer idle for 5-10min. I have turned my screensaver off and set the power options to never sleep.. problem still exists.I noticed that in my Event Viewer, I get this same message every 1 minute or so... Source:Security-SSP - Event ID:16385 "Failed to schedule Software Prevention Service for re-start at 2113-02-12T22:21:08Z. Error code:0x80041316."I dont know if that has anything to do with it, but the Event Viewer showed that message right before the crash.I am REALLY hoping someone can help me. I am so lost. I have tried everything. I tried that driver checker utility, I did that system file checker scan in the CMD, Ran a full scan with Windows Defender, uninstalled most of my software, unplugged all usbs and unnecessary hardware... I am just so lost. I have software installed from a friend that I can NOT ever reinstall so refreshing/reinstalling Windows is my absolute last resort. Hoping someone can help? View this thread

For the last few weeks when I go to turn off my PC it shows that I have a security update that needs to be installed. I assumed that it was installing the update as it always has before the PC would shut down. It became apparent to me that something was wrong and I looked at it. It is Security Update for Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 sp2 on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB2789643). I have checked as much as I can but for some reason my PC wont let it install. My PC is from the factory with Windows XP SP3 and has not given me any problems until this. What do you sugest I do. I have Microsoft Security Essentials and I have always thought that if it need upgraded it would have done it on its own. I suppose maybe I need to check and see if I can upgrade it, I just dont know what to do. That is why I have asked my question. Thanks, Michael Lxp View this thread
