I currentley run Security Essentuals but would like to try Windows Defender. When tring to open Defender there is a message that says it is out of date. Below and to the right of that message, the button that says update does not light up making empossable to open the update for Windows Defender. View this thread

My computer keeps crashing after it tells me to update upon restart. Once I do, I get to my log on screen and it's been changed. Once I'm at the desktop, it's blank and all my shortcuts are gone. Even worse is that I can only access programs and such by clicking on the lower task bar and opening it after activating the show "Desktop" feature. It keeps saying that windows is no longer compatible. Then I have to system restore and my computer is back to normal, but then it's constantly telling me to update. But the same problem keeps reoccurring. I would like to keep up to date with my windows, but obviously that's impossible if it'll keep crashing because of it..please help! View this thread

The latest virus definition version is: 1.145.1511.0 This comes off the Malware Protection Center page. My MSE page shows definition as 1.145.1513. Was .1511 included in .1513? View this thread

Currently running windows 7 home premium 64-bit OS.. Have been receiving error 80080005 after trying to do windows update. I cannot do system restore because it does not allow. I have access to internet. I an running Norton Anti Virus. I tried Windows Fix It to fix a problem but no success. I have done system readiness tool, sfc.exe, reset catroot2 folder, registry values, registered windows update files, rename softwaredistribution file, clear BITS queue. I am having no success. Can someone please kindly help me with this as I have run out of options? Thanks View this thread

I had not used my laptop in almost 6 weeks and I noticed there were no updates coming in. I started snooping to see if the service was running. It doesn't exist on the list of services..... It was updating ok in later January of 2013. So I then went to the software distribution folder under windows and it did have several updates hung up in there. I deleted them and re-booted just to see if it would help. No luck..... Can I copy that folder from my other windows 7 PC and dump it onto my laptop? Or is there and even more simple fix? Hi All,I had to reinstall Windows XP Pro and then all the Windows Updates. After doing a reboot, I saw my WiFi icon in the system tray has changed.It use to be the default icon, 2 computers with transmission lights back and forth, just like the wired network connection icon. When you hover over it I would see a popup with the Network name, connection speed, etc..After doing some updates and then rebooting the computer my WiFi icon is now a radio tower (looks like a chess pawn with radio waves on both sides). When I hover over it I get nothing. When I double click on it I get nothing. I have to right click and select 'View Wireless Connections' to see the networks.How do I get my default WiFi icon back?Thanks for any help,Charles View this thread

I have a dell xps 8500 that passed the upgrade assistant. So I decided a 2 weeks ago to upgrade windows 7 to 8. Everything ran great until this past wednesday when i restarted my computer for windows update. It restarted twice giving the error code 0xc000021a. Then it tries to automatically repair. That fails and then I'm on a screen that says troubleshoot or shutdown pc. Under troubleshoot I click refresh pc and am told my hard drive is locked. Resetting does not work either, a required drive or partition is missing. So I click on advanced options and try restoring, this says I need to specify which operating system I am restoring. I didnt keep windows 7 so i dont know what this means. Called microsoft support and we downloaded windows 8 on my laptop which is running windows 7 and burned a dvd to just do a clean install. We select custom install but windows does not see my hard drive. He has me run dell diagnostics and everything passed. Tier 2 support is suppose to call me back but If anybody has any answers for me I would like to try to get it fixed myself. They were suppose to call me at 11am friday but didnt call till 2:30 when i was leaving for work. The guy said something about trying to type something at the command prompt, but I didnt have time. I just got my new lap top last month and checking to see if Windows Defender was on. My windows defender is not on. It says "windows defender has been turned off & isn't monitroing your computet" I checked the action center and it says I have Norton anti virus. Is this ok or do I need to uninstall Norton to be able to use the Windows Defender? View this thread

I am attempting to update my drivers. I get a message to first update my windows updater. When I click on windows updater, it shows I have 5 optional updates available. Every time I click on that, to see which updates are listed, windows crashes. Then I have to start all over...getting the same results. I am using Windows 7 home edition, and IE 8. Please help! I am keep getting Automatic Update pop up for restart computer. But only Restart Later button is active .I manually restart my PC several time and then I instal updates and restart computer after that too but no luck .I have run troubleshooter as well. View this thread
