Using Windows 8 and having impossible time with updates. They all fail and those that look like they're loading take forever. I get annoyed and turn off the computer manually. Any answers? Is there some patch I need to load? View this thread

i just fell for the ammyy scam. i did run the program so the guy had control over my computer. I didnt pay them or anything but am i safe? because after the call ended i decided to look up this ammyy thing and i found out it was a scam. so i tryed to comment on a computer fixing website on what to do and when i had one sentence written down my clicker closed me out of the program and shutdown my computer! afterthat i disconnected my computer And the internet as well. im scared to turn it back on even with out the internet because my parents have bank information on it and stuff. im scared and my parents dont even know about it! im on our latop right now with wifi. Have a new system with a clean install of Win 7 64 bit Pro. Am trying to install win XP virtual machine. The virtual machine "upate" file installs then reboots. During the "configuring" phase as it reboots it gets to 94% done and then gives a failed update message and says that no files have been changed. I have redownlaoded the file and reinstalled it multiple times. I have changed the bios to make sure that Hardware virtualization is enabled. Every test that microsft has says my Machine is fine. However I cannnot get the virtual machine softwareupdate to successfully install. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance. Bruce View this thread

Okay so Windows has been unable to perform the update:Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows7 for x64-based Systems .......... 36.7 MB If this update is just downloading the program, I understand why it would fail, given that I already installed IE9 manually before it came in a Windows Update. I would however like it to acknowledge that it's installed then, and just stop trying to do an update I don't need. If it's an update for IE9, I'd prefer to have it solved. Today I noticed some strange things on my Windows 8 computer: - I could not open downloaded PowerPoint presentations, because ''the presentation could not be opened. Probably, an anti-virus program hinders the presentation from being opened.'' (translated error from Dutch) - I received a message that the Windows Defender service was turned off. I could re-enable it, but later I got the same message again. I have never used any anti-virus other than Windows Defender on my computer. I did a clean install, so there was no trial of an AV running. I've ran scans with Windows Defender, Malwarebytes Free and HitmanPro. No threats were found. Do you think I am infected by something? EDIT: I ran another quick scan with Windows Defender. When the scan was almost finished I received the error: ''the pc could not be scanned. The service of this program has been stopped. Update KB2789642 will not install after repeated automatic (and manual) attempts. The error code received is 00000643, but I can't find any information about this error code specifically. Running Windows 7. Problem is only on my desktop. Have a laptop with same platform and the update installed just fine on it. I performed a registry clean-up shortly before this update was released, but don't know if this has anything to do with the problem. An understandable fix for a non-geek guy would be appreciated. When running a Quick Scan or Full Scan with Windows Defender in Windows 8 an error message will pop up stating Windows Defender cannot scan the PC and Windows Defender turns itself off and you have to restart Windows Defender to establish Real Time Protection although it sometimes restarts itself. This seems to happen when it tries to scan certain files or program files. it is possible to find files or program folders that Windows Defender will be able to scan completely on a Custom Scan and I can isolate some folders using Custom Scan to determine which folders are a problem by process of elimination with Custom Scan but every time I eliminate the problem folders Windows Defender finds the same problem in some other folder. So problem is I cannot do a complete Quick Scan or Full Scan with Windows Defender in Windows 8. Windows Defender was scanning properly until yesterday and has been doing fine for well over a month ever since I installed Windows 8 Pro. View this thread

Hi:Many people recommend installing anti spyware software (like Lavasoft) in addition to antivirus.However sometimes it is not possible due to incompatibilities.This is the case of Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows defender or certain versions of Lavasoft Adaware.So will MSE protect of malware like adware, keyloggers, spyware and so, or should I choose another software couple?Thanks in advance! my laptop crashed and i lost everything,i went to where i bought it to to get a disk but the place is no longer! i had to use a freinds windows7 disk that was the only way i could get it started. but now i cant get some of my drivers back on i tried windows update and they say cant find any software for your driver and now iam having to use a belkin wireless card in order get online because my wifi or my ethernet connection on the laptop dont have drivers! I cannot install Windows Updates on Vista. Error Code is 80246008 Windows Update encountered an unknown error. My update history tells me that I have installed these (and i have many times) but I keep getting told to install them by Microsoft and my ant-virus (ESET) says that I am at risk until I do. Any ideas how to get rid of this problem? View this thread

I installed win8 pro build 9200 which was purchased from the Microsoft on-line shop and now I have a message telling me I have to activate windows. This is despite the fact that it has already been activated. On the rare occasion I could actually speak to someone at Microsoft about this I got the rather limp response of 'Oh that should not happen' They then took me through a complex series of 'fixes' which seemed to work, until, that is. I had to re-boot and got the 'activate windows' message again. This is now getting annoying as no one seems to know what is wrong and how to rectify it. Is there any way of deacivating the activate windows system? My serial has been confirmed as genuine by Microsoft so I know it is not a fraudulent copy issue. View this thread
