  1. I love the beautiful windows borders I had in Windows Vista and Windows 7!! Why are they gone? Actually, I think the layout in Vista is prefect though that in 7 is still nice. However, I can't accept the solid windows borders and rectangular corners in Windows 8!!>/< I know there is a method to make the windows borders completely transparent but what I want is sth. I had in Windows Vista or Windows 7! Can someone please give me a good reason why is the lovely feature gone or can the development team please add it back? Thanks. View this thread

  3. I recently did a full system Restore of Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit Op System. Since then, Windows Update is not working. I ran Fix it KB 947821 which told me it had resolved Windows Update problems and no further problems were detected. I also downloaded the System Readiness Tool. I still cannot get Windows update to perform. I open Windows Update and the first screen I get is a yellow shield that tells me I "must first Install new Windows Update Software." "To check for updates, you must first install an update for Windows Update" So I click "Install now"- I briefly see a pop up that says "Downloading & Installing updates" Then the Updates page returns with a Red shield box that says- "Windows could not search for new updates" "An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer" "Windows encountered an unknown error" Errors found Code 800B0001 Then a link to "Get help for this error" Which leads me back to trying the System Readiness tool and I'm stuck in a big circle of the same solution suggestions as I've already tried. Thanks in advance for any help. View this thread
  4. I have Windows Virtual PC installed in Windows 7 Pro, and I am testing it with Windows XP Mode before I use it for Ubuntu Linux. In testing, I have gone through the normal routine with Windows XP Mode, installing updates; but after the initial activation of Windows Update, after which I installed Microsoft Update, the update screen freezes for 9 to 10 minutes at the message "Checking if your computer has the latest version of Windows updating software for use with the Website..." before it goes to the next screen, "Welcome to Microsoft Update". I have also noticed that, even though the downloading process seems normal, the installation process is unusually longer than I expect, anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes for each of the biggest files. Is there a file within XP Mode that could be stalling the opening update screen, or could it be one of my programs in Win7 that could be responsible (though I doubt it)? Could it be that I may be missing an ActiveX program, or any program, for that matter? Or do I have one too many? Or should I simply scrub the XP Mode file that I have installed, and install a new one in its place, since I was in the early stages of Windows Update? View this thread
  5. This download has been appearing for 2 weeks for installation and I download it. It NEVER installs and within 15 minutes, the microsoft update icon in bottom right corner shows up and AGAIN wants me to download the same Security Update [KB2799494]. I have tried everything to fix this according to forums, including microsoft. The STRANGEST part of this is that when I click to "view installed updates", NOTHING APPEARS. So, I am stuck and I hope someone can help me. If anyone needs any further computer information, please be specific and hopefully we can get me through this:) Windows Vista Service Pack 2 [32bit] - I am using Internet 9. View this thread

(if assuming correctly, intermittently see pc slowd down, 1 rendition of task manager: svchost.exe at 95%.. and so.. isn't there supposed to be a way to stop people from walking all over our computer ????? ?? ?????????? thanks) back to the core question, re: Security for STOP ACCESS TO: services sndvol32 sound devices properties restricting services access to admin rights does not seem to be enough... would be back to asking if there isn't supposed to be a way... - have come up with renaming sndvol.exe to something else for use & KILLING the main app. what else do i do? - cannot stop SERVICES in same manner without a big cpu tart... what do i do in reference to locking down access to SERVICES? - WHAT starts the: Sounds and Audio Devices Properties app ?? else, what do i do to lock down this/ these items thanks had swb to block ports, sbsd to lock down settings (not seem to be doing the job). 8. I received an email with an attachment. When I attempted to download it, I got a message that I needed to install a Certificate in order to open the email. Because I know who the email came from, it is secure. When I tried to download the certificate, it sent me to DriverUpdate in which they asked me to pay circa $30.00 for. It stated I needed 17 updates which I can't believe. I just purchased Windows 8, why do I need to purchase driver updates? View this thread

  10. I currently have laptop set to automatic download and installation of windows updates. Update KB2670838 causes system crash whenever Internet Explorer Version 9 is running. I restored the laptop to a previous date using system restore and again allowed the update to install again. Getting the same results as previous installation of the update. I uninstalled the update using Add/Remove programs and laptop seems stable. I have Win 7 Pro 64 bit edition Serv pack 1 on HP DV7 laptop I7 processor and 16GB ram. View this thread

  13. My computer kept trying to install updates and restarting until it gave up and rolled back. I was able to install some one by one, but in doing troubleshooting it seems there are deeper problems. CryptoSys is not started and will not run when I try to start it (everything including msconfig show up as "Unknown Publisher", none of the Microsoft Fixit programs will run, when I try to update 3rd party drivers many will not run, and install type programs and also task manager takes many minutes to finally pop up. Windows Defender does also not start with 0x800726, but I'm not sure if that is due to multiple failed security updates. Finally, I tried system refresh and it would also not start, just what looked to be a hang. This laptop is only a few months old and was upgraded from Win7 to 8, View this thread
  14. This "Platform Update" broke Aero transparency on my Thinkpad W500. It was marked as a critical (i.e. non-optional) update. As I have no need for IE 10, I've uninstalled it, and marked the update as "hidden" in the Windows Update UI.Closer examination of the MSDN article about the update at View this thread

  21. Hi, Windows 8 Pro. I've noticed that even though I can download the stand-alone updates from Windows download center, and even though it will install regular automatic updates, it will not open/run/install any downloaded stand-alone updates at all. I've also checked the: Control PanelAll Control Panel ItemsDefault ProgramsSet Associations and the msu file extantion is set to be opened by WordPad instead of via windows installer (probably). I've tried to associate it with the Windows "stand-alone" installer module (Wusa.exe) but the msg I get is: " Cannot associate file type with this program "... " The program you have selected cannot be associated with this file type. Please choose another program ". If I change association to the Win32 Cabinet Self-Extractor, it just pops a msg' saying: " A required resource cannot be located ". ANY help will be greatly appreciated. With Utmost Respect, Me. 22. I have been trying for several days now to get Windows Update to work, but I keep receiving the same message, that "Windows cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart the computer." I have Windows 7 - Win7 64-bit, and Internet Explorer 64-bit. My security program is Avast! free antivirus program 7.0.1474 I have repeatedly restarted my computer. I have made every effort to be sure that my Wondows Update > Change Settings is correctly set: Install updates automatically (recommended) Install new updates: Every day, at 4:00 AM Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates Allow all users to install updates on this computer When the system does attempt an update, I leave the system up and running so it can do its thing. When I come back 12 hours later, it is still attempting to run the defrag. So I can't request updates, and the system appears to be unable to defrag. How do I get the "service" to start running again? I have followed the instructions that were posted by Microsoft Support's Halima S., and both methods failed. What, exactly, do I have to do now? Because this has gotten very old, very fast. View this thread

  24. Not only was a not allowed to postpone the update for more than 4 hours while my computer was in the middle of data recovery of my external hard drive (which of course restarted automatically while I was sleeping), but after the update, EVERYTHING is screwed up. Seriously? I went to bed everything was fine, wake up, and my computer doesn't function AND it screwed up a VERY important and VERY time consuming data recovery? GREAAAAAAAAT. Thanks a ton.Graphics aren't showing up, webpages aren't being displayed properly in Firefox (making them nigh unusable), Adobe Flash does not function, my background has changed, my taskbar looks like it came straight out of windows 95, instead of the nice pretty windows 7 one, I am now receiving an error as follows:There was a problem startingC:Users*******AppDataLocalTempSystperf.dllAccess is denied. It sucks that I only feel the need to come to the Microsoft website when you guys have ROYALLY pissed me off.So let's go ahead and start the time-consuming journey I have been forced to undertake already! I've got **** to do. View this thread
  25. I've been running Norton security for a few years. Decided to install Microsoft Essentials since there's no charge and it is a Microsoft product. Apparently I also had Defender on as well, all this time, along with the other 'essentials' except the Firewall. The Install went fine, no errors. Every security essential is in the "green mode".
